Vindicated Lyrics - Dashboard Confessional

Review The Song (124)

Hope dangles on a string like slow spinning redemption
Winding in and winding out, the shine of it has caught my eye
And roped me in, so mesmerizing and so hypnotizing
I am captivated, I am

Vindicated, I am selfish, I am wrong, I am right
I swear I'm right, swear I knew it all along
And I am flawed but I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore, you saw yourself

So clear like the diamond in your ring, cut to mirror your intention
Over sized and overwhelmed, the shine of which has caught my eye
And rendered me so isolated and so motivated
I am certain now that I am

Vindicated, I am selfish, I am wrong, I am right
I swear I'm right, swear I knew it all along
And I am flawed but I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore, you saw yourself

So turn up the corners of your lips
Part them and feel my finger tips
Trace the moment, fall forever

Defense is paper thin
Just one touch and I'll be in
Too deep now to ever swim against the current

So let me slip away, so let me slip away
So let me slip away, so let me slip against the current
So let me slip away, so let me slip away
So let me slip away, so let me slip away

Vindicated, I am selfish, I am wrong, I am right
I swear I'm right, swear I knew it all along
And I am flawed, but I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore, you saw yourself

Slight hope dangles on a string
Like slow spinning redemption

It means to me | Reviewer: Andy | 9/22/12

This song is about finding out the girl you’ve suspected of being unfaithful of actually being unfaithful. She always made you feel selfish and wrong because she would always deny it. The reason I say that is that today I finally caught a friend of mine and my on-again/off-gain girlfriend "in the act." As I drove away I swore I heard this song playing in my head. When I got home I listened to it and it made even more sense!! Let me elaborate:

First part is talking about how you got roped into the relationship time and time again because the "hope" that this time things will work. Seem to "rope" you in and "captivate" you.

Vindicated because I always suspected her as being unfaithful. I was selfish and wrong she would tell me but no I was right, I knew it all along. And I am the man that she said I was because now I'm finally leaving.

So clear like a diamond because even when she swore they were just friends I knew there was more.

Finally the end is about her trying to tell me again that I am wrong and mistaken and me telling her to save her breath, to smile and move on because we can finally end this vicious cycle. She can move on, be happy and I can do the same.

So let me slip away.

I know I'm writing this as a 30 year old man that has just gotten his heart broken by the girl he's been in a semi relationship for 5 years but that is what this song means to me.

Thanks.

For me, this song has a completely different meaning. It's not a relationship song to me. It's a song that repeats what I feel, that I've made mistakes, I'm not perfect, I'm not angelic, but, I am trying to be myself. And I am saying this to life who has pushed me down everytime. But know what, I'll always stand up. No matter what. Because that's the way I am.

A different perspective on the song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/30/11

To me, this song has a meaning that goes beyond a girlfriend/boyfriend relationship type of thing. I am the mother of two school-aged children. Recently, I had to address the fact that my son was being bullied on his bus. The mother of the "other" child insisted that her son was not at fault. However, after speaking with the bus driver and school principle it was evident that this other child was causing all the problems and was in fact, bullying other kids. I feel that I am VINDICATED! The words in this song speak volumes. Thank you Dashboard Confessional!

Meaning... | Reviewer: Tiffany | 8/14/11

I have noticed a lot of the comments are about the meaning of the song and as it turns out the song was solely written for Spider Man 2 the movie so the song pertains to the story line in which Mary Jane is getting married and the emotions that Peter Parker is having as a result.

I think is (obviously) about a couple that has broken...maybe by the girl´s decision, so he´s so hurt that his taking out all his deeper fellings, and at the moment he´s singing all of that, he´s realizing that her expectations were a little bit higher they should, so that is why his between guilty and relief (was or wasn´t my fault??) and at the end when he says "so let me slip away..." it´s not literally, he´s refering to his thoughts, because he still loves her...
well thats my opinion :)

meanings... meanings ... meanings!!!

I just read the first page of comments and re-read the lyrics, and they are all fitting (to me at least), but it means something different to me.
To me, this song talks about accepting who we are, good and bad, realizing how awesome we really are in times when we feel like we're worth nothing, accepting our flaws but try to work on them either for ourselves or for someone loved, trying to know who we are; about letting behind what certain people expect from us (parents and/or couple) and the things people don't like about us and putting them aside because we've learn to accept our true colors making us feel "vindicated" for not being afraid to say when we think we are right or wrong,etc...Something we knew all along we should've done, but were too overwhelmed, by others expectations, to actually do it.

Totally agree with "the wise" but I dont think hes made love to her, in fact i believe hes doing all what he can to avoid that situation and he makes it! thats why he is vindicated, he did the right thing.

Cheating. He's made love with a girl who was engaged to be married. If you hear the secret's in the telling, you'll make the connection. He has a deep desire, be it love or lust, for someone who belongs to someone else, in this song he's retelling how he felt, then he's telling the girl to not make an advance "let me slip away," against the current because the reality is, he still wants her.

PERFECT DESCRIPTION! This hapenned to me a couple of months ago and he did right thing, it was very hard for both of us thu.

meanings... meanings ... meanings!!! | Reviewer: Sakib | 7/21/10

it's funny how the same song could mean a thousand different things to different people. The first time that i heard this song, I was falling in love with someone. at that time, she meant the world to me, and i used to listen to this song, and used to think that i'm gonna become the best that she deserves ("cleaning up so well") and the hope of being with her was all that i could dream of. now that it's been 3 years since then, she's gone and I find myself listening to the same song... i find hope to be the chance of going back to a normal life. not be distracted and sad about it. and i have these theories in my head about why she left ... cause she never did give one... what was i saying?? ahhh songs... they always have different meanings to different people... the important thing is to relate to them and to be able to cherish those memories that they remind u of... at least that's what my dangling hope is :)

a little different | Reviewer: taman | 3/25/10

anybody ever get engaged to someone and had a rough time with fighting? yeah try looking at it like that. i know what this man is feeling because he wants to be with her but wants out at the same time to protect his/her feelings. the thought of maybe its better for us..."let me slip away". the hope dangles on a string is the hope of staying together or getting back together. just look at it like i said you'll land close to what he means. this is an emotional song so dont cut it short

i CANNOT stop listening | Reviewer: ariel terrazas | 3/18/10

Clearly the guy is sayng(singing) to the girl that he is justified(another word for vindicated)in what he does and how he feels about her! He's cleaning up his act because she draws him toward her.Not on purpose of course. He's becoming or transforming into her Prince Charming!:)How cute.NOT AT ALL CHEESY!!!!If a guy sung this to me while playing an acoustic i would melt! that's not a metaphor either! All you can trust my judgement on the song to cause I am a literary analyzer and I do this stuff(like find the meanings of songs,dreams,poems...etc)for a living!!

To me, this song is about someone who's with a girl who's expectations are too high. He's selfish, he's wrong, he's right.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I can relate to it.

He now sees all the things she swore she saw in him.. all of the good things she couldn't appreciate enough.

Alot of these comments are about individual relationships; though that is fine and all, but just listen to the song. Whether you are in this position or not, this song is beautiful. The chords and the lyrics flow together as one. This song belongs on the top of any playlist.
