I am straight and form what I raed there are a few homophibics out here. Anyway, you can say
whatever but the truth is that the disco era was
great. To bad you couldn't enjoyed it because you couldn't dance, was to old or to young.
Maybe you are way to macho and you are a hard
core man(I am scared). All that tells me is that you are afraid you might like it. Don't be afraid you know who you are.

LMAO The last guy out hate-mongering against people who disagree with him, calling vile names, and accusing him of being "a pansy because he wouldn't sign his real name" - written by a guy who also uses a screen name. Look around pal - nobody uses their real name including you. And it would mean nothing to you if they did. People that use such silliness usually don't have much to say anyway.
People are entitled to their opinions including you and the other guy. If your mission is to attack others, call them names, and envision yourself as the word police, then doesn't that make you what they are - plus a hypocrite?
The song is what it is, and like many others, can be taken in a variety of ways. I think the group was probably all looking to cash in on a few bucks to take a chance being suggestive. The VP put out a lot of songs with completely stupid lyrics and most of them sounded the same. Yet they are all still fun to dance to if you aren't in your corner trying to decide if it's a gay song or just hating everyone who does. I don't want to be around either of you losers.
So whatever your opinion or whether you are just out hating other people with opinions, give it a rest and go dance a bit. Honestly, nobody really cares what you think, and you think way too much of yourself if you are out there blasting others for their opinions.

Was asleep when the movie featuring the Village People was going off and this song was playing. The lead singer's voice was so full of energy that it got my attention. While this song is 30 years old, it's good to feel what he was singing about. He's right! You can't stop the music!

------ About the song In The Navy performed by Village People
I'm a senior officer aboard a sub. A Navy man for most of my life. I love music of all kinds. Even by today's standards, this song is still relevant. It's quite original in concept, structure and presentation. Elementally simple yet effective. There isn't any "hidden" agenda in the lyrics exept apparent to those who want to find something there. Also, I could care less whether the artists were/are actually gay. The point is they're talented and their work is appreciated. Too bad the Navy didn't go through with the publicity campaign years ago that incorporated this song. I think it would have been great for public relations, marketing and recruitment.
GO NAVY!

Directed at Anonymous. I'd like you to go into a bit more detail as to why disco sucks so much. I would like you to explain your reasoning behind the accusation that it is gay music, and furthermore elaborate as to why being gay is such a terrifying prospect.
Discos were created for people to let go of the troubles of the 70's and dance the night away. If you're too much of an uptight, homophobic, neo-nazi asshole to accept that, then at the least leave the gays that you fear so much and, in fact, don't exist, alone.
You say you were scarred for life by this song when you were a kid? All that tells me is that you've been a bible-thumping bastard for your entire life. Apparently you don't have any friends at all, or else you wouldn't find the idea of hanging out with other men so repulsive. No, women don't find it attractive that you hate other men so much, or have to be a bigoted killjoy and too much of a pansy to even sign your real name, and especially that you would only visit a club to get into some girl's pants.
You're more vile than the terrible, terrible gays that you percieve everywhere men don't act like complete assholes to everyone around then, because anything less isn't manly enough.
Read a book for once in your life.

You are an idiot! I mean if you dont like disco then why are you looking at these lyrics or even looking at this song?! I mean so what if they're talking about being gay or not?! Who cares about what they do or not?! And what is "gay music"? If you tell me that this song is gay music then your saying my whole family is listening to gay music cuz we almost always play this song at our family gatherings. And thats a lot of people your talking about there cuz my family is huge! I'd hate it if your part of my family.....

First of all, I don't care what men do at the YMCA, gay or straight! I just like the song! I grew up listening to Disco and, although it may be dead, it still gets me moving every time I hear it and it's just plain fun to sing and dance along to. As for this guy: The lyrics aren't gay but the song is. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/13/09. Talk about homophobic. I'm not gay, I'm a straight woman but honestly, who cares? You say, "we have to endure in the pursuit of women?" These "places" as you put it are not the only place to find straight women. Sounds like an excuse for someone who's fishing in the gay pond!!!!!

Back in the 70's some YMCA's were a place were gay people would go and have a lot of sex. Im not implying that all YMCA's were like this but a few in "the city" did such things. C'mon this was the 70's, the gay movement was in full gear, and everyone knows The Village People were homosexuals. Let your grandpa know next time you see him spelling with his arms. Also, dont touch the equipment.

During WWII my uncles would come home for R&R and I asked where they stayed in "town" they told me "the Y.M.C.A., it has inexpensive rooms and showers". My Uncles were not gay' they were outdoors men from the logging country. All of them join up the day after "Pearl" that was in 1948.... things change qith time. I young friend (21 Yrs old) told me it's known to be a gay hangout now.

To the person below me: You are an idiot. Idiot. Idiot. Idiot. Many people go to work out including women. Most people that go to the YMCA are straight. So by working out (which can be considered manly) I don't see how you are fishing in a "gay pond" I bet by your logic the boy scouts, the army, and football teams are all "gay ponds".
And as for music there is no such thing as "gay music" that like saying rap is "black music" it is both made by and listened to by white people too you dolt.
Oh and by the way if you really are the "manly man" that you seem to think you are why the hell are you afraid of gay people?
You must be a coward.

------ About the song Y.M.C.A. performed by Village People
First of all, disco sucks. It is not fun. It is gay. The fact that straight chicks go to discos does not make these clubs non-gay. If you are a straight guy going to one of these clubs you are fishing in a gay pond. Everyone in a disco looks like a lascivious clown. So for non-gays these places are not fun they are just something we have to endure in the pursuit of women. And as for the YMCA song - no the lyrics are not gay per say. But the music is hopelessly gay. And when you combine gay music with lyrics about a place where men go to hang out and have good time you have a gay song. This song is SO gay that as a kid when I first heard it I actually actually thought that the YMCA was a gay organization. I would even go so far as to say that, to this day, this song psychologically scarred me so much that even the idea of being near a YMCA creeps me out. No, if I want to have a good time I'll check out the YWCA instead.

The YMCA (Young Men's Christain Association) was a place young men, often homeless, could come and stay for very little money. Church services were provided.
The village People's song is sung in just about every hoppin' night club I have ever been to. Including other countries. I was in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, two weeks ago at Squid Row dancing to "YMCA". There was hardly anyone in their seats. It was great! (Sung in English with a Mexican accent.)
No matter where you are, or what language it is sung to, the YMCA's tune will make you feel like dancing and having a great time doing it!

what bad messages are hidden in this song? you said about bad messages but all this song is saying to join the Navy. Do you have something personal against the Navy? Im a navy brat, and I think this song is excellent. The only way you can hate this song is if you have something against this type of music or this group or the Navy. That's all I can think of.

------ About the song Y.M.C.A. performed by Village People
Lets analyze the lyrics:
Young man, there's no need to feel down (Depressed, low, unhappy).
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground.(a result of feeling down)
I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy.(when your in a new town that means u left the old one, the fact that your unhappy may be a result of you being force to leave)
Young man, there's a place you can go.( speaks for its self, says there is hope for you)
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough.(wow i didnt kno they used this word bak in the day lol...but dough means money or bread, food that you eat, meaning when your low on money and/or food)
You can stay there,(the YMCA which is a place for men to go when they have no where else to) and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time. (now this is where things get tricky….when your feeling down one of the ways to pick yourself up is to have a good time or fun the ? of the matter is what you consider fun, there were gay men bak in that time and if your gay and around a bunch of men your type of good time may be different then others and sex with each other may hav been one of the ways they had fun, but if you were not it would be like just hanging with your boys)
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
They have everything that you need to enjoy, (games, food, tv or men if that’s what you enjoy, hell they may even had hookers)
You can hang out with all the boys ... (again what I said above applies here)
You can get yourself clean,(if you hav no home and you aint washed in days here’s your chance) you can have a good meal,(speaks for its self)
You can do whatever you feel ...(what I said before applies here also)
Young man, are you listening to me? (do you hear what im saying)
I said, young man, what do you want to be? (what are your aspirations)
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams. (you can manifest your dreams even though things are not looking up for you, remember not every1 has the same dreams)
But you've got to know this one thing!
No man does it all by himself. (You need help, a support system)
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf, (don’t be ashamed to ask for help)
And just go there, to the Y.M.C.A. (they can help you and give you support)
I'm sure they can help you today. (they may have the things you need on demand)
Young man, I was once in your shoes. (I was there before)
I said, I was down and out with the blues. (just like you are)
I felt no man cared if I were alive. (now man can be used to describe men and woman as it does in the bible, but if your gay and like men then u kno it means men)
I felt the whole world was so jive ... (I thought the whole world was wack, and crapy)
That's when someone came up to me, (a person told me where to go for help just like I’m telling you)
And said, young man, take a walk up the street. (that’s where the YMCA was)
It's a place there called the Y.M.C.A.
They can start you back on your way. (more proof to the purpose of the YMCA which is to help people get on their feet)
Young man, young man there's no need to feel down (don’t be sad)
Young man, young man pick yourself off the ground (have hope!)
About the group:
The band's name references New York City's Greenwich Village neighborhood, at the time known for having a substantial gay population. Morali and Belolo got the inspiration for creating an assembly of American man archetypes based on the gay men of The Village who frequently dressed in various fantasy attire. Believe it or not, not every original member of the disco pop group The Village People is gay. Here's a rundown:
• Randy Jones, cowboy: Gay
• David Hodo, construction worker: Not Disclosed (he may have went both ways)
• Victor Willis, cop: Straight
• Alex Briley, sailor: Gay
• Felipe Rose, Indian: Gay
• Glenn Hughes, biker: Straight
Yea I have nothing better to do lol but in conclusion because not all of the original members were gay this song has 2 sides to it. It all depends on how you want to look at it.

YMCAs in the United States and Canada use this logo. The three sides of the red triangle symbolize the YMCA mission to "build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all".
The Young Men's Christian Association ("YMCA" or "the Y") is a world-wide, largely nonsectarian and apolitical social movement with a special emphasis on community development and young people. It uses a holistic approach to individual and social development encompassing spiritual, intellectual and physical methods. This approach is symbolised by the inverse red triangle used by YMCAs around the world representing the YMCA mission of building a healthy spirit, mind, and body.
The YMCA was founded in London, England, on June 6, 1844 by Sir George Williams as a result of his desire to "win souls to Christ" in the midst of the unhealthy social conditions in London during the Industrial Revolution. Since then the YMCA has grown to become a world-wide movement of more than 45 million members from 124 national federations affiliated through the World Alliance of YMCAs.
In 1844, the concept of a YMCA, which began among evangelicals, was unusual because it crossed the rigid lines that separated the different churches and social classes of England, making the YMCA a pioneer of ecumenism. This openness was a trait that would eventually lead to the inclusion of women and children and a culture of acceptance of people of different faiths and backgrounds. Today, the degree to which religion is emphasized in programs varies between individual YMCA associations. Generally, YMCAs are open to all, regardless of faith, social class, age, or gender.[1]
Its name represents something of an anachronism, but it has been retained as a strong brand name.
