Videotape Lyrics - Radiohead
Review The Song (18)
When I'm at the pearly gates
This'll be on my videotape
When Mephistopheles is just beneath
And he's reaching up to grab me
This is one for the good days
And I have it all here
In red blue green
In red blue green
You are my center when I spin away
Out of control on videotape
On videotape [x6]
This is my way of saying goodbye
Because I can't do it face to face
So I'm talking to you after it's too late
sponsored linksNo matter what happens now
I shouldn't be afraid
Because I know today has been the most perfect day I've ever seen.

I think it is about him being down with music. Thinking to himself that he had a wonderful carrer and is not sure hom much longer he can do it. Thom is a shy person, so the lyric "I can do it face to face" just means that he will not go on tv and say we are done with music but it's easier to say it in a song. IDK, just my opinion. No matter what interpretation you go with, it is a beautiful song.
Great song not necessarily depressing | Reviewer: Ronoc | 12/28/12
This song is not about suicide, but about reflection on ones life and accepting that the outcome is the sum of the decisions you have made throughout your life. He refers to both Mephistopheles and the pearly gates. So he is watching the playback of his life both good and bad. "This is one for the good days" "Because I know today has been the most perfect day I've ever seen." both lyrics suggest he has come to accept his fate whether he walks through the pearly gates or Mephistopheles pulls him down.

this is an epic song. the drum track and the melodic tracks are in different time signatures, so there's a phasing effect. honestly, who gives a crap about what it means? (and Thom Yorke has said that the lyrics to their songs don't have any particular meaning anyway)
damn complicated radiohead.... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/7/12
I don't think he is necessairly dead, but rather remembering what he has done in his life and what he will be remembered for. Referring to his life as being like a video tape seems to show how he looks upon his life in a disconnected way rather than activly participating in it, living in the past rather than the present.
Add the emotional/romantic parts = suprisingly moving song, which for me at least makes me feel happy rather than depressed.
passing on | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/22/11
i think this song is about dying, obviously. what i think he's commenting on is the fact that every one dies, and everyone knows they're going to die, but it's still such a hard thing to come to terms with. it's hard to say goodbye to everything you've ever known and loved. i think he knows this and he's saying goodbye before he actually has to go because it'd be too hard for him. this recognition, this realization is what makes today the most beautiful day he's ever seen.

you know that people say that before you die, youll see all your life, like in a movie, i think thats the videotape, and when Lord is beneath him to grab him "And he's reaching up to grab me" hell say goodbay and all that stuff is a good song, like he had a great life :) and hes remembering every moment in over his life ! :p
Don't cry, it was 'the greatest' | Reviewer: Kaityy | 4/27/11
Honestly, for me, this song isn't about suicide or lost love.
When I first heard this song, I thought of old age, or someone dying happily after a long bout of illness.
It's lyrics are too poetic, too hopeful to be about suicide.
Hell! The whole album of In Rainbows us such a lovely, hopeful record. People dragging it down to the dust, saying that it's depressing and sad; listen! It's not about pain or suffering, it's about hope and a wistful happiness. Sure, it doesn't hit you right there and then, but listen closely and you'll be surprised.
It may not be the true meaning but that's what I got from it.

I don't think it is about suicide. I think that he this is a song to someone that he loves a great deal, but cannot express himself to in person due to intensity. So, he puts it on a videotape. When he is at the gates (dead) this person will have his thoughts and feelings (on record) and they will know that they are the most important person in his life (the center when he is spinning). He's not taking his own life, he is afraid of dying before he gets to express himself so he is putting it on record.
Most perfect day i've ever seen | Reviewer: Bg | 9/22/10
I'va always loved radiohead, because every song has so many different meanings, they can be interpreted on mant different levels. I think this is about getting old and dying, like many have said, but your opinion may differ
What If | Reviewer: Hernán Meza | 9/19/10
What if he's just anticipating what would happen when they get old
and die, people would just know them through videos, and that will
be the way he's saying goodbye to everyone. it's kinda of depressing thinking that way, but that's what I think.
Suicide note | Reviewer: Adrian | 4/17/10
This is obviusly a suicide note in a videotape.
He's saying goodbye after it's too late (After he suicides) from the videotape because he can't do it face to face.
It's so fucking depressing wow.
One step closer to complete perfectness | Reviewer: Jakob | 2/25/10
I don't think this has anything to do with suicide.. I imagine that Thom was thinking about getting old and dieing while thinking of a loved one. A very beautiful song! :D
The pearly gates are the gates to heaven and he is sitting there, watching his lifes videotape to decide weather he is going to the heavens or hell..
Well, that's my opinion.
Suicide note | Reviewer: The Reckoner | 2/20/10
In my opinion it's a suicide note, and how the person will be judged in heaven, by looking back on his life on a videotape. Then judging whether he gets eternal happiness, making the mephistopheles (a chief demon) reference would imply heaven AND hell being involved, and that he's reaching to try and take him. As he's looking back on his life, in red blue green (The colours formed to make colours on a screen) he see's that he has it all there, being summed up in a short video and 3 colours. And he is trying to communicate with people and he's saying goodbye, through his videotape.. But it's too late. However he's content with passing on, because he's seen the most beautiful day he's ever seen.
great depressing song | Reviewer: Megapixel | 3/21/09
