The background was that during the Cold War, there was concern about the prospect that if one side made a first strike on the other, it would lead to both sides attacking each other relentlessly, which would result in the destruction of both sides. It was a concept known as Mutual Assured Destruction, which was the topic of many songs such as this, "Wooden Ships" by Jefferson Airplane/CSN, and "They've Got a Bomb" by Crass.

Can anyone tell me much about the background to this song?
The lyrics about poor government decisions, perishing amongst atomic waste, and "search and destroy" make it sound as though it's from the Reagan (or Thatcher?) era.
