Handcuffs Lyrics - Brand New

Review The Song (14)

I’d arrest you if I had handcuffs
I’d arrest you if I had the time
I’d throw you down in the backseat
As if you'd committed a terrible crime

I'd break in a town's worth of houses
And rob whole families blind
I’d do it to you like you'd do it to me
If you knew you would get away fine

I’d drown all these crying babies
If I knew that their mothers wouldn’t cry
I’d hold them down and I’d squeeze real soft
And let a piece of myself die

It’s hard to be the better man
When you forget you’re trying
It’s hard to be the better man

I’d arrest you if I had handcuffs
I’d arrest you if I had the time
I’d wait for you outside the courtroom
and taunt you when all your appeals were declined

I’d drive my car off of a bridge
If I knew that you weren’t inside
With the pedal to the floor, who could ask for a more
fantastic way to kill some time

You could lay on your back and be beaten
You could put up your fists and fight
You could try and be way off

It’s hard to be the better man
When you forget you’re trying
It’s hard to be the better man
When you’re still lying

It’s hard to be the better man
When you forget you’re trying
It’s hard to be the better man
When you’re still lying
You’re still lying

This band is so talented, it's crazy, and yes, I was scared by the drowning babies part at first to, but it really is just a metaphor. Play Crack the Sky was a metaphor of Jesse's life in the form of a shipwreck. I was too surprised that Vinny wrote this. I think it's about loving someone, say a friend, a lover, a family member who has hurt them badly. I'll try and put it into a situation to express what I mean. Say it's about a brother who is a drug addict, and is constantly hurting the family do to this. Of course his brother is ashamed of him, and angry towards him, but at the same time, only wants the best for him. It could be any situation where a person is torn between love and concern for the wellbeing of their loved ones, and revenge.

Love this song | Reviewer: DMC | 8/15/11

I discovered this song on my playlist on the way to work and the first two lines made me laugh so hard I nearly crashed the car. Admittedly I do have sick sense of humour but this song alternately makes me laugh like a lunatic and get major chills. I love the way Brand New manage to be disturbing in an amusing manner - and this song is a prime example.

From this song, I get the impression that this person really loves someone, and is saying that they would do anything for them, even die. It almost sounds like the person wants to end it all, and "handcuff" the person they love to die with, but they realize they can;t be selfish and do that to the person whom they most care about, and has to let them go.

From my knowledge Vince wrote this song. Jesse is not one of my all time favorite lyricists. He IS, repeat,Jesse Lacey is my all time favorite lyricist ,but, if Vince wrote this song he really did an amazing job. I feel like he's saying all these terrible things but he doesn't want to go through the consequences of all those things. Truly a great song lyrically and musically. Very under appreciated. Brand New is amazing.

It is very true... It is hard to be the better man.
But simple words that this music is amazing i reckon Dallas Green and Brand New are two world changing muscians, But also to be heartless you must forget and not care.

this song is beautiful and it correlates to my life so perfectly that i can almost assume jesse wrote this after viewing a recent episode of my life. my ex-girlfriend is a beautiful amazing girl and i loved her. we moved on after several unforgettably amazing months together and i dont regret a thing. but now, after the break up, i realized how much she has changed from a beautiful good girl to someone who lacks self decency and self respect. she doesnt do it intentionally, but after we broke up, she had to adapt to her old friendships again because we were no longer hanging out. her friends have also changed dramatically since the beginning and the end of the relationship. now, she hangs out with people that are not her real friends and it hurts me to see her lost. i would do anything to change her around to the amazing girl i once knew but i dont know how i can do that. it is so hard for me to let go and let her live her life the way she wants to. but in my honest care for her, i get so frustrated and angry- just as jesse describes- and i just want to "handcuff" her and put her away, in hopes that she would change. it's so hard to be the better man and let go. it hurts me so bad that i honestly wish i could drive myself off a bridge to save her from her stupid fake friends and the things they do to waste their lives away. and EC, if. you read this, im sorry and i hope you can still change yourself to be the girl i once knew and loved so much.

um yea | Reviewer: Janine | 2/13/08

When I first listened to the song, I was taken aback when I heard the lines about drowning babies. At first I was a little skeptical about the meaning and purpose of that particular line and what it had to do with the rest of the song but after a few more listens,I really grew to love this song like I love every song they make. What surprised me was that Jesse didn't write it.
It is a beautiful song though. I love it.

Blew me away | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/22/08

I'm surprised not a lot of people have commented on this song and most spent time arguing the interpretation of "Jesus Christ." This by far is my favorite song from them. I can't recall a song that has hit me so hard and still gives me the chills when I listen to it.

can't go wrong with acoustic. | Reviewer: Sarah | 10/28/07

katie, i was at the uptown show on the 15th, also. jesse was right when he said it's one of the most beautiful songs they've written.

Beyond Words | Reviewer: Katie | 10/26/07

This song is just beyond words. I saw them last night and when they played this song I about melted. It was the best show I have ever been to, and this was one of the best songs I've ever heard, live and otherwise.

Spectacular and beautiful | Reviewer: N. Hunter | 8/1/07

As with the rest of the songs from this album, this song is absolutely incredible. It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I really fell in love with it. The orchestral background in this song, and the slow build up all lend to the atmosphere.

Genius | Reviewer: F. Marie | 12/1/06

This group keeps coming up with exceptional and creative ideas in their words and music. It's so refreshing to hear a song that has meaning and not a repetitous sentance over and over again which becomes quite boring.
