Degausser Lyrics - Brand New

Review The Song (7)

Goodbye to sleep,
I think this staying up is exactly what I need
Take apart your head
Take apart the counting, and the flock it has bred

Goodbye to love,
Well it's a ride that will push you up
Right against the wall
Take apart your head
Right against the wall
Chew it up and swallow it
[In background:]</i>
(Does everybody really need to know everyone?
Do you really think you're really a part of it?
And is your army really one of some thousands?
And will you declare war on the loony bin?)

You burnt bright but you run out
I fell asleep in the afterlife
I can't shake this little feeling
I'll never get anything right

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from her cup but you don't own up to anything
And you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
You wish I could inspire
Take apart the demon up in the attic to the left
[In background:]</i>
(When I arrive will God be waiting and pacing around his throne?
Will he feel a little Old Testament?
And will he celebrate with fire and brimstone
Yeah, I admit, I am afraid of the reckoning)

Goodbye my love (You burnt bright but you run out)
You wait right here, and they will come and pick you up (Let's sleep at the incline)
I've been on pause but I'm shaking off the rust (I can't shake this tiny feeling)
I've lost my charge, I've been degaussed (I'll never say anything right)
I'm on my own, I've been degaussed (I'll never say anything right)
I'm on my own, I've been degaussed (I'll never say anything right)
I'm on my own, I've been degaussed (I'll never say anything right)
I'm on my own

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
Say, "I don't mind you under my skin
I'll let the bad parts in, the bad parts in"
Well when we were made we were set apart
But life is a test and I get bad marks
Now some saint got the job of writing down my sins
The storm is coming, the storm is coming in

You burnt bright but you run out
I fell asleep in the afterlife
I can't shake this little feeling
I never did anything right, I'm on my own
I never did anything right, I'm on my own...

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
I don't mind you under my skin
I'll let the bad parts in, the bad parts in
Well you're my favorite bird and when you sing
I really do wish that you'd wear my ring
No matter what they say, I am still the king
Now the storm is coming, the storm is coming in.

My thoughts.. | Reviewer: Neil | 2/19/13

Here's the thing about Brand New... This song reminds me a lot of "You Won't Know"... A big message, to me, on this album is the feeling that he's not good enough, or not sure if he's good enough. For "her", being a representative of females and love, and possibly even "Him" as in God, as referenced in songs like Jesus. He blends the two, almost making his insecurities about whether he'll be good enough about both at the same time, good enough for God, good enough for a woman... Good enough for love in general.

I feel like he blends them on purpose, and I feel like a lot of it is because of the way the church makes people FEEL unworthy as a way to make them buy into their religion as a way to make ammends.. I often get confused by the concept that if I don't practice their religion, God would just turn me away.. If God is as amazing and forgiving as we say he is, he should forgive us regardless of whether we believed or not.

Either way, the combination of the two is further pointed out to me like in Jesus where he refers to the first line "Jesus christ that's a pretty face, the kind you'd find on someone that could save"... I assume it's a girl, and maybe this girl can save him.. Salvage him. Maybe make him a good person.

This line's got a lot of that undertone to it... Referencing the "saint got the job of writing down my sins..." ... The same concept.. He's got too many sins to be loved. As in, he would taint the otherwise beauty of a young woman.

This whole album feels like a journey in his own mind, trying to rationalize a terrible breakup, or terrible shutdown, and deciding whether he's capable of truly being loved by a woman, or if he's not worthy, and he's possibly asking God the anwer throughout the album. It's one big question, and he's searching for one big answer...

That's just my vibe of it, though..

(I don't mean this as a religious debate as to whether God exists or not, believe whatever you want to it doesn't bother me, this is just what I get from the song/album as a whole)

What a "Degausser" is. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/21/12

There's a video on Youtube of Jesse explaining what a Degausser is. Basically when your recording a tape, the tape has a magnetic reading on it that runs over a tape head, and if you do that long enough eventually the tape head builds up an electronic charge. A degaussing tool is kind of like an electromagnetic de-charger. You run this tool over the tape head it takes away the charge.
So the word Degausser literally means to take the charge away from something.
The lyrics are about someone not feeling worthy. "I wish I could inspire","I'll never get anything right." They've lost their charge, they've been degaussed.

diff. versions | Reviewer: casey | 8/30/10

their are different virsions of this song, they have admitted to it as well, for instance the "fall asleep in the after life" is also " fell asleep in the alkiline" as in a line to get more alkahal, and useing it as an degausser. and yes i know my spelling is horrable.

lyrics...? | Reviewer: Clayton. | 7/6/10

This song is about self worth, in a way. The part where he sings..."You sipped from the cup, but you don't own up to anything, and you think you will inspire." There he mentions how some people are so assumptive that they matter so much, that think, they [are] their worlds warm center. He later sings, "I wish I could inspire" to note how he wishes he could be normal like them, and think such things..." I can't shake this little feeling....I'll never do anything right."

A person could listen to this song fifty times, and hear fifty different combinations of words. No one will ever know if it's "you burnt bright but you run out," "you're brought back but you're running," "you burnt bright but you run out," or what the fuck. I don't know if it's necessarily their motive to be misunderstood, but I doubt they mind it either way.

Correction | Reviewer: Breezy | 1/13/10

"Well you sipped from her cup but you don't own up to anything" should be "Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything" because that makes much more sense. He's talking about leading a double life....the cup being the wine or Jesus' blood.

The last line of the song | Reviewer: Brandon | 9/17/08

..you covered it pretty well, but I do believe (as in the previous parts of the song)..in the last line he says "Now the storm is coming, the storm is coming IN." Don't quote me on it, but I was just listening to it while looking @ the lyrics and I'm pretty sure Jesse says "in" after the last "the storm is coming.." in the song
