Universally Speaking Lyrics - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Review The Song (17)

I saw your face
Elegant and tired
Cut up from the chase
Still, i so admire
Bloodshot your smile
Delicate and wild
Give me she-wolf style
Rip right through me

Silveretta the jets of a lifetime
Go and get her,
I got her on my mind
Nothing better, the feeling is so fine
Simply put, i saw your love stream flow

Come on, baby,'cause theres no name for
Give it up and i got what i came for
Universally speaking

I take it back and you make me nervous
Nothing better than love and service
Universally speaking
I win in the long run

I saw your crime
Dying to get high
Two of a kind
Beats all hands tonight

Silveretta the jets of a lifetime
Go and get her,
I got her on my mind
All the better, to make it is so fine
Simply put, i saw your love stream flow

Come on, baby, 'cause there's no name for
Give it up and i got what i came for
Universally speaking
I take it back and you make me nervous
Nothing better than love and service
Universally speaking
I win in the long run

Silveretta the jets of a lifetime
Go and get her,
I got her on my mind
Nothing better, the feeling is so fine
Simply put, i saw your love stream flow
Simply put, i saw your love stream flow

Let's go

This song definitely has something to do with his ex Claire and realizing they were more alike than he thought "I saw your crime Dying to get high Two of a kind" has to do with them seeing each other under the influence for the first time together. They were off and on and then finally ended up breaking it off...you have to read his autobiography to fully understand its an absolutely amazing book and they are an amazing band.

in between | Reviewer: Perlita | 2/10/09

I think is a mix of lust and love. I mean he knows what he came for buts its not over yet.He see's something else at least thats what i like to think of specially like someone mentioned before i win in the long run is pretty selfish but also people dont notice whats with in a smile unless theres more passion there...Right? lol

Not Ugly Lust, Pure Love | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/19/08

I believe it is a misinterpretation of these lyrics to call them ugly lust. He sees her face, elegant with beauty, yet tired with the suffering of the soul, cut up from the chase of happiness in this material world. In a brief moment, he sees her heart open, her Love stream flow: he sees her divinity, and he knows that "theres no name for" the eternal beauty there. Give up the illusion, the pain and the longings you hold on to, come to Truth, universally speaking, and be free. This Truth is: there is nothing better in this life than Love and Service, and we all win in the long run. Since it is his goal to set her free, and he knows that the way this universe works, it is only a matter of time anyways, he feels the peace of the certainty in this knowing: he wins, in his selfless goal of Love and Service. He saw her crime, the cause of her misery, dying to get high, to reach that point of self Love, strength, and divine freedom, maybe glimpsed in some drug use. All drug use, all addiction, is just the longing for Love, and the only kind of Love that satisfies is the undying eternal Love found in Love and Service: free of boundaries, material requirements, and limitations: found in giving, not receiving, and is our own eternal nature, shadowed by ignorance.

Ugly lust, no love. | Reviewer: Casey | 12/6/07

I think there can possibly be a very crude, sexual interpretation of this song.

"I saw her face.... elegant and wild... ripped right through me." (No mention of the feeling of love). The beginning talks about him first seeing her with mere lust. Just, "go and her her IT", so long as IT is on his mind. "give IT up, and I got what i came for." (giving up herself in a sexual way.... maybe even 'giving up her virginity', and that's all he came for) Perhaps, "universally speaking" refers to the universal truth that this is what every guy wants. "Nothing better than love and service" (rip and dip). The word LOVE in "love and service", and "love stream flow", most likely refer to the action of love as in a synonym to SEX, not the feeling of love. "I win in the long run" sounds like a pretty selfish claim, and again, throughout the entire song, "universally speaking" is declared after every everything as an excuse; 'that's just how it is'.

I dont agree with this idea, and i dont accuse the band for meaning this, just saying that this may be a possibility, and im putting it up for discussion.

You are SO a toolbox | Reviewer: asdfasdf | 10/26/07

Dudeski, no one said these songs had no meanings to the artists. Someone, however, DID say that finding the meaning to a song isn't about finding the correct meaning, but rather your own personal experience (well, something similar). So, uh... go away please, no one needs your negitivo. Besides,I know the Chili Peppers.

(I don't really know them, but that's about the only thing you could have said which would have made your post lamer.)

You Are SO Wrong | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/22/07

The person who said that songs aren't meant to reflect the feelings of the artists is wrong in almost every case, especially concerning the Chilis. Almost every song gives reference to experiences Anthony Kiedis or the entire band has had. If you read Scar Tissue you would know that because Anthony talks about several different songs and what they mean to HIM, not his fans. There are been many different instances where members of the and have talked about each songs meaning. Rolling Stone devoted an entire article interviewing The Chili Peppers about the meanings of several songs off of their new album. Anthony Keidis has publicly stated that the song "Hard to Concentrate" was written for bassist Flea and his wife Frankie Rayder's wedding but that he was thinking of his girfriend and mother of his new baby boy Heather Christie when he wrote it. He has also said that the song "Animal Bar" off their new album was about reading a book in the middle of an Australian rainforest. Anthony Kiedis was with Claire Essex (aka Yohanna Logan) during 'By The Way' which is what the track "Universally Speaking" is off of. He was very much in love with her so I have no doubt this song was written about her. He also has admitted that the song "Slow Cheetah" off of their new album was written about Claire/Yohanna.
While many songs are written for the listener to perceive it however they want, MOST songs have a story behind them and almost EVERY ONE of the Chili's songs have stories behind them....so simply put, you are wrong, and you should research the Chili Peppers before making statements like that.

Great | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/8/07

This is one of those songs that makes your heart flutter. The words in the chorus, sung with his voice is one of the best things I've heard.
After reading Anthonys autobiography, their songs have a whole new meaning to me now. Theres so much more depth and meaning to them when you know how and why they were made and where they came from.
Even though so many are about drugs and sex, their still one of the greatest bands and anthonys a pretty cool guy.

Very moving song. | Reviewer: johnny b | 8/28/07

this is one of those songs you hear while your driving. and you feel that loving life feeling. that's much deeper then the song means to be. i love the red hot chili peppers. all of their music. this song is probably a top 5 song. i like it a lot. it really calms me and makes me appreciate life.

Love this song but..... | Reviewer: simonjury@btinternet.com | 7/30/07

Love this song. Yes, music says different things to different people, but having just finished reading Anthony's autobiography, SCAR TISSUE, I believe that this song is written about a woman called Claire. I think that the lyric "I saw your crime, dying to get high" relates to the time that they were both clean and had never seen each other under the influence of drugs / booze and she asked him what it would be like if they got high together.......... my interpretation............ you have to read the book !!

its whatever you want. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/24/07

songs aren't created to feel what the artist is feeling they're created to make you feel however you perceive it as. music is personalized to every individual, it's freeing and it doesn't necessarily have a set story behind it. this song is perfect.
