The Smiths UNHAPPY BIRTHDAY Lyrics

Last updated: 03/18/2010 11:00:00 AM

I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
'Cause you're evil
And you lie
And if you should die
I may feel slightly sad
(But I won't cry)

Loved and lost
And some may say
When usually it's Nothing
Surely you're happy
It should be this way ?
I say "No, I'm gonna kill my dog"
And : "May the lines sag, may the lines sag heavy and deep tonight"

I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
'Cause you're evil
And you lie
And if you should die
I may feel slightly sad
(But I won't cry)

Loved and lost
And some may say
When usually it's Nothing
Surely you're happy
It should be this way ?
I said "No"
And then I shot myself
So, drink, drink, drink
And be ill tonight

From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Oh, unhappy birthday
Behind
Behind
Behind

I think it actually goes:
"i said no, i'm going to kill my door"
Then later....
"i said no, and then i shut myself".
It may seem strange, but if you look at what's been done (swap the door and myself), i think the lyric was originally i'm going to kill myself and shut my door, but swapped so as not to promote suicide.
I think this is definitely right :).

A question | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/6/07

Are you positive that the song doesn't go : "I say no, i'm gonna kill my douwn (*as sunrise)", and then later "I say kow and then I shout myself (*as turn myself silence)???
But then again, for years I was quite shure that the bigest Smiths hit is "Midnight strikes again" :))

Although not the best tune on this record, it has it's high points. Leave it to Moz to call out being unhappy on the happiest of days. You gotta love the man.
