Review The Song (36)Print the Lyrics
Two days past eighteen
He was waitin' for the bus in his army greens
Sat down in a booth a café there
Gave his order to the girl with a bow in her hair
He's a little shy so she gives him a smile
And he said would you mind sittin' down for a while
And talkin' to me I'm feelin' a little low
She said I'm off in an hour and I know where we can go

So they went down and they sat on the pier
He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care
I've got no one to send a letter to
Would you mind if I sent one back here to you?

I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone
When the letter says a soldier's comin' home

So the letters came
From an army camp
In California then Vietnam
And he told her of his heart
It might be love
And all of the things he was so scared of
He said when it's gettin kinda rough over here
I think of that day sittin' down at the pier
And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile
Don't worry but I won't be able to write for a while

I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone
When the letter says a soldier's comin' home

(Martie's fiddle break - Emily's dobro break)

One Friday night at a football game
The Lord's Prayer said and the anthem sang
A man said folks would you bow your heads
For a list of local Vietnam dead

Cryin' all alone under the stands
Was a piccolo player in the marching band
And one name read and nobody really cared
But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair

I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone
When the letter says a soldier's comin'

I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone
When the letter says a soldier's comin' home

this song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/14/2008

I am a female soldier in the US Army and I tear up when I hear this song because I understand waiting for a fellow soldier a loved one a friend a brother and sister. I will be waiting for a long time since some won't be coming home in spirit but just in body. Loving someone who lives life is just as hard for others as it is for us who fight daily to give you your freedoms and rights. Don't forsake us for we will never forsake you.

Im Proud of USA and down with Iran | Reviewer: Me | 9/6/2008

soldier<3 | Reviewer: Allison | 8/29/2008

I love this song. It relates to me and a guy while i was up on vacation and i met him at a pier in Wisconsin. We spent the whole night talking and i found out that he had been in the military for 2 years but hadn't gone to war. We've kept in touch and now he is going off to war in 3 months. I cry everytime i listen to this song, because it's so similar to the situation i have. I have such a great appreciation for all the soldiers, and everyone needs to realize what they put their lives through just keep ours free.

Death before Dishonor. <3

very honored.... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/19/2008

I love the song and among other things i am very supportive of our troops and honored that someone else is willing to die for my freedom....does that strike anyone. right now i have a few friends and one very dear close "brother" in five days, he used to write me everyday. PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL OF OUR TROOPS AND THE SAFE RETURN OF THE ONES THERE NOW.

Great!!! | Reviewer: Kaluluoy28 | 2/19/2008

We should be proud to our soldiers..they fight for us. Travelin' Soldier is one great music i've ever heard..it sends shivers down my spine and gives me goose-bumps every time i listen to it and made me sad too because they had to fight even if it's not right..coz' by political reasoning but what they can do they just following orders. So let us support our troops not even americans but all of them in the world. They are H.E.R.O.E.S of our country...and Dixie Chicks are GREAT country singer. Keep up the good work girls!!!

Waiting For A Soldier | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/11/2008

This song is very good! It pin-points the feeling of waiting for a soldier in the war . You never know what is going to happen when their there becuase your not there... All we can do is hope they come back!!!

The Song... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/2/2008

is my favorite song by them. When I first heard it, it made me cry. I don't really like the Dixie Chicks, but this is the best song they have ever done

Down with the ignorant. | Reviewer: bree | 2/1/2008

During the Vietnam era countless soldiers were mamed or killed. If they returned home, they received little to no support from fellow Americans. I applaud anyone who can stand to put up with such treatment. Although I may not agree with the political reasoning behind a war, I support our troops with all my heart. That's all the song is talkig about -- showing a little love and support for our boys overseas.

Umm...huh? | Reviewer: Sabat | 12/22/2007

Our troops killing innocent people? I am the first to note that Vietnam was a mess we should not have become embroiled in. Let us look at the Iranian record of goodwill toward innocents. I'll keep it to recent history and one single event. The persecution of Bahai's in Iran. Speak not of the murder of innocents. At least here religious freedom is a truth. But to the song...very poignant. Political or nationalistic view aside, every person across this planet can connect with this song that is the loss of life in war. Sadly, every culture has used war so every people has experienced this and the Dixie Chicks capture this with a skill that borders on the genius. I am no fan of country music, but the Dixie Chicks have opened the door to a few great artists in that genre.
