Transcending Lyrics - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Review The Song (11)

You are my god, you are my dog,
You kept me close, love never lost,
I called you hippie, you said fuck off,
Said you brothers a real punk rocker.

Refrain:

Somthings gonna happen,
Somthing very soon,
Transcending flesh could be a breeze
Sending me over the moon.

Friends near death, you gave respect,
Sympathetic intellect,
Choices are, for one and all,
All we are is, leaves that fall.

Thats all.

Always be loving you, now im away from you,
Always be loving you.

Round and round inside your head,
Smartest fucker i ever met,
Vicious fish bit at your toes,
Made you lie and numb your soul.

Refrain:

Somthings gonna happen,
Somthing very soon,
Transcending flesh could be a breeze
Sending me over the moon.

Mule donkey ass you bore a load
Of all creations tortured souls
Choices are, for one and all,
All we are is, leaves that fall.

Like no other, i love you you're my brother.
Like no other, i love you you're my brother.
Like no other, i love you you're my brother.
Like no other, i love you you're my brother.
Like no other, i love you you're my brother.
Like no other, i love you you're my brother.

Water flowing and i will drink it,
I will drink for you.
A part of me left that only you knew,
Will never be understood, will never be understood.

Hey, gone to stay.
Entire lifetime flash before me,
In a loving stream.
Hey mother May, I have lost a child,
But she gave birth,
To a loving stream.

Ooh, never know. When the gods will come and
take you,
To a loving stream.
Ooh, heart of gold,
The most special things you gave me were
From your loving stream.

In a loving stream.

Fuck the magazines,
Fuck the green machine,
See the human being,
In a loving stream.

Fuck the legal greed,
Fuck the nothing scene,
See the family,
In the loving stream.

I love the "I called you hippie, you said fuck off," to me it showed the type of humor they had with each other. I can just picture River saying this, he was very serious but was also able to laugh at himself. RIP Rio

the end makes perfect sense to me | Reviewer: Diane | 4/13/11

I think the ending makes perfect sense - the first half is a beautiful, lyrical poem (with that awesome spiraling base) about their friend and then it breaks into the extraordinary chaos and rage of their grief at losing him. I don't think it represents his final thoughts - it is their grief

R.I.P. Rio | Reviewer: Michael Lee | 4/22/10

One of the best tracks on "One Hot Minute", "Transcending" is the second time that the Peppers have shown love to River Phoenix in song (the first was "Give It Away"). An awesome tribute to a brilliant artist, human being and friend of theirs who was taken from this world at far too young an age in tragic circumstances. Perhaps he had completed his mission on this planet and has now been rewarded with Nirvana (a life without pain). "PEACE" "Stand By Me."

River Phoenix will never be forgotten, may he rest in peace. He is an example of what Hollywood will do to you. I just found out about his close ties with the red hot chili peppers. He was a great actor, and is missed.

I just read today in Scar Tissue, how this song was about River Phoenix, but I originally, I always thought that it was a song detailing a drug trip, more specfically, a cocaine trip as what Anthony describes.

How it starts out great, smooth, and nice, and with certain lyrics like "You are my god, you are my dog, You kept me close, love never lost" and "Always be loving you." and then it leads into a very hardcore abrasive ending which I likened to Anthony's description of the terror that is coming down from cocaine.

Rivers flow... | Reviewer: Harty | 4/9/07

I am obliged to agree with Shannon for pointing out what I was going to say; the contrasting ending of the song came as a shock to me at first, but after you have heard the song a few times, you begin to get used to it, and the initial contrast seems less extreme.
However, it is only reading the lyrics that one can truly appreciate the brilliance of this song. Yes, it was written by Flea and Anthony in memory of River Phoenix. With this in mind, the ending (which, when you know is coming) really paints an image of how River must have been feeling in his last dying moments. The beautiful, flowing colours and melodies become a blur of darkened clashes and breaks which give a graphic view of River's tragic end. Notice that the first lyric after this change includes the line, "...entire lifetime flashed before me..." I cannot begin to express my empathy for such talent.
As for the break in which the drums build up to an even more dramatic ending, we see the very last moments of River's sadly shortened life - but are we seeing one final convulsion, the speeding effect of the drugs, or have we already lost him by this point?

This is one of my favourite RHCP songs, and possibly my favourite non-Frusciante song. Take the time to listen to it with its true meaning in mind.

R.I.P. River Phoenix.

Absolutely amazing song. I agree with Shannon. I'm glad that they wrote the song how they did and didn't make it radio friendly. Truely amazing song. Amazing talent.

River Phoenix | Reviewer: Shannon | 10/17/06

The Red Hot Chili Peppers made this song about their friend, River Phoenix, when he died at age 23 in 1993. It wasn't meant to be radio friendly, and I'm glad that they expressed their true feelings without doctoring it up. It is a great song with some awesome riffs and teriffic lyrics. If you listen to the lyrics, they were really heartbroken about this guy's death. What a perfect song.

Transcending transcends the normal relm of music | Reviewer: Ian | 2/20/06

This song is made by the flowing of the bass and guitar together. It begins with a spiraling bassline, and the drums and guitar soon follow. After the line "all we are is, leaves that fall" is one of the best guitar licks of all time. It just makes you want to listen to it over and over again. The bass and guitar just flow so well together. Its a fantastic song but is somewhat ruined after the first 3 minutes. It breaks into a contrasting disjointed ending that just doesnt go with the first half. If you take this away, this song could have been a legendary single...i wish they used this guitar riff to record a more radio friendly song because it would have been a classic...it is still a great song however
