Traffic In The Sky Lyrics - Jack Johnson

Review The Song (15)

There's traffic in the sky
And it doesn't seem to be getting much better
There's kids playing games on the pavement
Drawing waves on the pavement
Shadows of the planes on the pavement
Its enough to make me cry
But that don't seem like it would make it feel better
Maybe its a dream and if I scream
It will burst at the seams
This whole place will fall to pieces
And then they'd say...

Well how could we have known?
I'll tell them it's not so hard to tell
If you keep on adding stones
Soon the water will be lost in the well

Puzzle pieces in the ground
sponsored links
But no one ever seems to be digging
Instead they're looking up towards the heavens
With their eyes on the heavens
There are shadows on the way to the heavens
It's enough to make me cry
But that don't seem like it would make it feel better
The answers could be found
We could learn from digging down
But no one ever seems to be digging
Instead they'll say...

Well how could we have known?
I'll tell them it's not so hard to tell
If you keep on adding stones
Soon the water will be lost in the well

Words of wisdom all around
But no one ever seems to listen
They're talking about their plans on paper
Building up from the pavement
There are shadows from the scrapers on the pavement
It's enough to make me sigh
But that don't seem like it would make it feel better
The words are all around
But the words are only sounds
And no one ever seems to listen
Instead they'll say

Well how could we have known?
I'll tell them it's really not so hard to tell
If you keep on adding stones
Soon the water will be lost in the well, lost in the well

I also live on Oahu and I agree with M. Smiths comment. They keep building here to the point that there is nothing left to enjoy. Think of the water as open country. the stones are the developments and more people. "keep adding stones and soon the water will be lost in the well"

lost in the well | Reviewer: Chris | 1/25/14

Its about building over nature but also raping the planet and its resourcrs. As we throw stones into the well, the water level rises so we are able to scoop some more water out. Bu as we continue doing this soon the well will be all rocks and no water. That is exactly what the situation is with fossil fuels, rare metals etc etc. What a great metaphor

I love this song! Thank you Jack for your music!
The message I get from the song is how we are building on top of nature and destroying it.
"There's kids playing games on the pavement
Drawing waves on the pavement
Shadows of the planes on the pavement"
The fact that the kids are drawing waves on the pavement and there are shadows of planes on the pavement is so ironic. Instead of being in nature, the child only has his imagination and draws it. And there's even planes in the sky!
Our influence is everywhere and pretty soon if we keep putting more stones in the well (building all over), our water (nature) will run out.

if you keep adding stones... | Reviewer: Asger | 7/16/12

I think he means that if you do to much about something you will overdo it, and it will loose It's meaning. You need stone to build a well, but if you put too many you won't even be able to get to the water

Keep adding stones soon the water will be lost from the well | Reviewer: Nick | 3/9/11

Makes me think it has something to do with using up earths natural resources and how know one admits to knowing they are running out, even though it should be quite obvious. "it's not so hard to tell."

Its Deeper than you think | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/4/11

the first few times i listen to this song i didnt truelly understand what it was about, but as a i listened more it became clear to me. it shows that the its in our human nature to always be dreaming of a better life and a better world, but no one ever looks into themselves for answers. and how once this truth inside ourselves is found, people will be asking "how could ypou have know?"

The correct meaning towards this song. | Reviewer: M Smith | 12/6/10

I like seeing everyones different opinions on this song and how this song effects everyone differently. I can assure you this song is ONLY about Hawaii. Jack Johnson as you know is from Oahu, HI. (Representing Hauula!!!) If you have ever been to Hawaii, you will most likely see a lot of big colorful signs talking about "Keeping the country country". So he is sighing because of all the development inside Hawaii. The shadows of the planes are the planes coming in and going from Hawaii (all the tourists plain and simple). The kids are playing games on the pavement, drawing waves on the pavment... Kids will be kids and boy was it fun drawing on the pavement. Now this is only my opinion, but I do believe that it best describes what the song is truely about. Take it with a grain of salt though. Thanks for reading.

Great Song | Reviewer: Mike | 11/18/10

I agree with everyone else, but I really feel its about 9/11. From the first time i heard it thats what i got out of it. It actually screams it. Shadows of the planes on the pavement, scrapers on the pavement, heaven, well how could we have known... I also feel the three verses are backwords seeing how the last verse talks about plans on the paper.

Just listen to the song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/27/10

If you listen to song, really listen you will realize that its about something deeper than what you think it is. I think this song is amazingly written, as a song witer myself i envy what he can do wih these simple melodies, and the way he words things is amazing. All of his song are unique, and all well written, they are very deep and meanigful. when you say that you think this song is all ove the place youre ridiculous because if truly understand words, music and how to interpret them you will automatically understand the meaning behind of a song. Its not about an airport.

State of this world | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/22/10

I think this song is about how people seem to have taken over the world. We take over the skies even, with our planes, we cast shadows over the beauty of the earth with our skyscrapers. The children draw waves on pavements because there is no more nature for them to play in. We've overindustrialised our planet, and I think Jack is frustrated by that.

Great sound... but wtf is he talking about? | Reviewer: Corey | 3/19/10

I love how this one sounds... i like to listen to Jack before i go to sleep. I read that this song is about world war. Now, i can kind of see that with the planes, but without prior knoledge, Jack seems to be all over the place. He's got kids on the pavement, there are lots of planes, and they'll say how could we've known.... without prior knowledge about the content, this song could be about an airport.

really chillin' | Reviewer: calcium | 5/11/07

I love that song! There are just a few songs in the world, that build up that fantastic atmosphere.
Perfect when you are chillin with some frieds and your guitar at a fire.

I love this song. It's one of my many favorites by Jack. If i where ever to pick up a guitar and learn, this would be one of the first songs I tried to sing.
