Throw Away Your Television Lyrics - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Review The Song (10)

Throw away your television
Time to make this clean decision
Master waits for its collision now
It's a repeat of a story told
It's a repeat and it's getting old

Throw away your television
Make the break big intermission
Recreate your supervision now
It's a repeat of a story told
It's a repeat and it's getting old

Renegades with fancy gauges
Slay the plague for it's contagious
Pull the plug and take the stages
Throw away your television now

Oy oy oy

Throw away your television
sponsored links
Take the noose off your ambition
Reinvent your intuition now
It's a repeat of a story told
It's a repeat and it's getting old

Renegades with fancy gauges
Slay the plague for it's contagious
Pull the plug and take the stages
Throw away your television now

Throw away your television
Salivate to repetition
Alleviate this ill condition now

It's a repeat
It's a repeat
It's a repeat
It's a repeat
It's a repeat

Not quite... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/19/12

While the song is about media influence, you take things a step to far. It isn't about the media "controlling" you, it's more about how it influences you negatively. The biggest idea in the song is how tv causes complacency. Instead of doing something productive, trying to make a change, or creating something on your own ("take the stage") it causes you to just accept what is going on and not doing anything original. Also, HIV isn't a man made virus, it came from monkeys most likely after somebody ate monkey flesh and had it transmitted into their bloodstream where it rapidly mutated. I also doubt that swine flu was man made as well. There is only one true man made virus I know of and that was in safegaurded incredibly tightly. The plague the song mentions is not literal.

"You're not looking close enough... | Reviewer: The Good Reverend | 7/5/09

This song is about how the government and mega corporate conglomerates are programming our minds via subliminal messages. This lyrics are referring to mind control tactics that are used to dumb down our entire country via ad campaigns and television/movie story lines. It is also referencing plagues/viruses and how it's "a repeat" - specifically man made viruses "Swine Flu" "HIV/AIDS" which were all created in labs to intentionally infect innocent people around the world through vaccinations. Do your research kids, if you think that obesity is the biggest thing wrong with this country you've got another thing coming. Infowars."

whoever said this is right, just do some research and you'll understand what it's about..

the Slime oozin out of your TV set | Reviewer: Mark Tele | 5/14/10

Zappa (I'm the Slime) & the Tubes (Remote Control concept album) hit on this theme back in the 70's. Glad to see the next generation (Peppers & Incubus) taking the torch & runnin with it. Good job. There are others that have done it too, but I can't think of 'em right now.

It's A Repeat | Reviewer: BAFID | 4/6/10

I think 'it's a repeat' doesn't refer to how Anthony started using drugs over and over, and neither to that he isn't the first to tell us. I personally believe it refers to the dull repetition of anything on tv, and that yet many people keep on watching everything over and over again.
The idea of the song is brilliant, and the 'oy oy oy!' is also really cool :), though the bass is a little punkier (which i don't really like) than the rest of the album.

Idiot Box | Reviewer: Maltin | 5/30/09

David hit it right on the spot. It literally means THROW AWAY YOUR *(&(*& TELEVISION. and it's a reapeat meaning that this is not the first time artists/musicians/modern day shamans have been trying to tell us this. There's a song like this from incubus titled IDIOT BOX.

well.. | Reviewer: Becki Chamberlain | 5/25/09

i think this song is referring to addiction. because many people are addicted to watching tv, and as many know, anthony had a drug addiction, so i think that hes saying, "throw away your addiction, because what your doing is just a repeat, and it's getting old, " because he went to rehab severaal times, but just began to use again.

I think it means more than that... | Reviewer: David | 10/27/08

I don't think it's about obesity or fitness, RHCP are usually a bit deeper than that... i think it's more the creative/intellectual/spiritual damage that most (not all) TV does to your mind and your thoughts...

What this means | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/12/08

I'm not %100 sure if this is correct, but it could seem like a pretty accurate description. First of all, this is an absolutely brilliant song and I love the solo, makes me just like... ohmg what a song. But yes I believe this song refers to the health epedemic of America, as they eat more and they become obese, they resort to television as a common pasttime. By getting rid of your sets, you can get out there and become fit again. Sorry I just really felt like telling someone this :D
