Those Anarcho Punks Are Mysterious... Lyrics
Artist(Band):Against Me!
we're all presidents,
we're all congressmen,
we're all cops
in waiting, we are the workers of the world.
there is the elite
and the dispossessed.
it's only about survival.
who has the skill to play the game for what it's worth,
and reach an obscure kind of perfection.
let's try and keep as much emotion out of this as possible.
let's try not to remember any names.
we'll do it for a country,
for a people,
for a moral vision.
united we'll make them remember
our history.
or how we'd like to be told.
how we like to be told.
we rock, because it's us against them
we found our own reasons to sing,
and it's so much less confusing
when lines are drawn like that.
when people are either consumers or revolutionaries,
enemies or friends. hanging onto the fringes of the cogs in the system. it's just about knowing where everyone stands.
all of the sudden people start talking about guns,
talking like they're going to war.
cause they found something to die for.
start taking back what they stole,
sure beats every other option.
but does it make a difference how we get it?
well do you really fucking get it?

Anarchy.. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/1/09
i think it is partially about losing yourself in the system to a certain extent when your trying to make money and survive, I agree with that interpretation. But before anyone starts musing about the meaning of anarchy--keep in mind, anarchy is simply the absence of government, chaos is a connotation (something people think of when they hear the word, instead of actual definition, if you failed english :P).
so many people talking about the meaning of anarchy have never even opened the dictionary and looked it up........
Actually... | Reviewer: Joe | 1/30/09
I think what they're saying is this: That people (on both sides) have a tendency to see each other as statistics, because it's much easier to do terrible things in the name of a cause if you don't realize who you're hurting. But if we really want to succeed as anarchists, we need to realize we're trying to reach people, and convince them we're what's better for them, not force them by any means necessary, which is actually COUNTER to what anarchy is about.

To: Anonymous and the left activism comment.
If you had an understanding of politics you would understand that Anarchy has nothing to do with the political left. In the grand scheme Anarchy is the opposite of Libertarianism. The liberal left is opposite to the neocon right and the viewpoints make a cross. You can actually take a political quiz to see where you truly lie on the political spectrum.
The leftists and the right are becoming the same. They are all fucking neocons. Both are pushing an agenda, both for the love of money and their own ideals. It's a joke.
I am dead center on the spectrum leaning ever so slightly left of the line between left and the right.
The song is about surviving the game.
ehh.... another useless comment about that I think | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/7/08
I think this song is talking to the struggles of being completely different than the system that you are fighting against, and that this may lead you to become what you are trying to over through.

"Is Against Me! pointing this occasional hypocrisy in this song, or are they talking more about how we are all labelled as radicals, etc., by mainstream society and we should actually go with this...?"
close.. see, it isnt just the "mainstream" that uses simple labels like "consumers" and "revolutionaries".
and they arent saying that we should go along with it. its satire. theyre pointing out how ridiculous it is for everyone to "draw lines" making everything so black and white. people find a view, stick to it, and oppose everything else, but things are much more complex than that.
the part towards the end talking about how people have found "something to die for"... theyre talking about how far people take things... these things that are based on their ideas of absolute right and absolute wrong. people dont focus on the gray areas. and thats where the problem is. we all have much more in common than we think, but because of the blinders we wear, we dont realize it... and wen end up with unnecessary conflicts.
definitely mysterious | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/27/08
I've loved this song for a long time but I am still a little confused about the full message Against Me! was trying to give out in it. Being involved in leftist activism I have seen a lot of sad divisions occur, only making our protests weaker. Sometimes people who call themselves anarchists actually create a stuck-up, hierarchal system amongst their fellow activists, despite their anti-hierarchal views. Is Against Me! pointing this occasional hypocrisy in this song, or are they talking more about how we are all labelled as radicals, etc., by mainstream society and we should actually go with this...? Because the way I see it, anarchists and and free thinkers ARE hanging onto the "fringes of the system" when they turn against others for having different views or ideas. How much does this accomplish for any of us?
