You breathed infinity into my world
and time was lost up in a cloud and in a whirl.
We dug a hole in the cool grey earth and lay there for the night.
Then you said, "wait for me we'll fly the wind,
we'll grow old and you'll be stronger without him" but oh,
now my world is at your feet. I was lost and I was found,
but I was alive and now I've drowned.
So now I will be waiting for the world to hear my song
so they can tell me I was wrong...
But they weren't there beneath your stare,
and they weren't stripped 'till they were bare of
any bindings from the world outside that room.
And they weren't taken by the hand
and led through fields of naked land
where any pre-conceived ideas were blown away...
so I couldn't say "no".
You sighed and I was lost in you, weeks could've past for all I knew.
You were the blanket of the over-world and so I couldn't say,
I wouldn't say "no". But they all said, "you're too young to even know,
just don't let it grow and you'll be stronger without him"
but oh, now, my world is at your feet. I was lost and I was found,
but I was alive and now I've drowned.
So now I will be waiting for the world to hear my song
so they can tell me I was wrong...
But they weren't there beneath your stare,
and they weren't stripped 'till they were bare
of any bindings from the world outside that room.
And they weren't taken by the hand and led through fields
of naked land where any pre-conceived ideas were blown away...
But they weren't there beneath your stare,
and they weren't stripped 'till they were bare
of any bindings from the world outside that room.
And they weren't taken by the hand and led through fields
of naked land where any pre-conceived ideas were blown away...
so I couldn't say "no".

Review about They Weren't There amazing | Reviewer: brooke | 10/19/09
I'm singing this song for my music performance at school, and to have had the opportunity to read all of these different views on this song, has helped me to understand and connect with it on a level I couldn't have imagined possible. I was debating with myself as to whether or not I should sing it, because I'm not sure if I have the ability to draw people into a song the way she does, with such simple, yet powerful technique, but I think that now that I understand it more, it will help me to deliver it (hopefully).
The fact that some of you obviously know what you're talking about is awesome, too. Thanks for your insight.
Wish me luck.

I think it's about a girl so blinded by love that she didn't realise that the boy only wanted her for sex. And she couldn't refuse him, even though she got warned. And she's trying to tell the world that they don't know how she felt bacause 'they weren't there' in her place.
But anyhow, I think it's a beautiful song
i think that song is about a girl that broke up with her boyfriend and then there's another boy was waiting for her and loves her and he told her'you'll be stronger without him' and she couldn't think of any excuse and here comes the part'i couldn't say no' but she tried to tell him that she's still in love with her ex and she's so confused...please comment :)
religious? | Reviewer: Chris | 4/27/09
i definitely got a religious vibe from this song. i dont think it necessarily is talking about a relationship with another person, but a relationship with god. now im not really into christian music and such, but i think this would be an example of some good christian music i can get into.
"But they all said, 'you're too young to even know,
just don't let it grow and you'll be stronger without him'
but oh, now, my world is at your feet. I was lost and I was found,
but I was alive and now I've drowned."
i feel it especially in this line. not necessarily drowning as a bad thing but drowning in the depths of god's grace.
im just hanging this out there as a possibility. songs can have many meanings and i think this one can fit for more than a few people. thanks for reading

My ex did this to me | Reviewer: Casey | 11/27/07
I am pretty young and yet my ex did the same thing to me.
All he wanted was one thing and i was to blinded by love to even notice the difference.
Though i know the truth i dont think my heart can take the fact that he didnt love me at all.
I accept it but my heart disagrees.
I am still in love though i know i need to move on. Its hard to accept the truth when it comes to your emotion and the song reflects that.
To where she says that the world will tell her she is wrong and yet she couldnt say no though she knew she didnt want to go through with it.
I didnt want to lose the one i loved so i continued on with an act that i had no desire of doing.
Its hard accepting the truth.
My ex-girlfriend did this to me. </3 | Reviewer: Sarah | 11/21/07
My ex-girlfriend, Andrea (slut) did exactly what this song says, to me.
She pressured me into having a relationship with her, when she knew that my friends and family dissaprove with my sexuality, and then when she got what she wanted, (sex) she left me with nothing but a broken heart, and a river of tears to comfort myself with.
My parents and my friends now all have disowned me.
But I still love her.
♥
I always find myself outside her front door, but I just don't have the courage to knock.
I think the neighbours think I'm a stalker.
Wonder why.
Treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen - it always works.
Sarah loves Andrea,
forever and ever babe.
That's what you said to me with a tear in your eye.
I love you.
I love you.
I love you.
I'm your puppet.
Rergards,
Sarah.
Song writers take note | Reviewer: anthonyc | 6/3/06
What makes this song special is not just how many strong emotional segments it contains, but how gracefully it weaves them all together.
It begins rather pleasant and innocuously - which perfectly captures the feeling of recalling something fondly. The mood begins to fracture at the exact point that Missy reacts with a "But" in the response to something her partner has asked of her.
The next musical progression, perhaps the bridge, strongly evokes feelings of mournful resignation, and sure enough Missy is talking about how she will be waiting for the world to hear her song, and tell her she was wrong.
Cue the dramatic Chorus where Missy definantly articulates what made her act the way she did, loudly and boldly. To restate the mood of regret, the chorus winds down with a mournfully slow "so I couldn't say no", which slows things down enough to make a smooth transition back to a verse.
Lyrics aren't perfect, and show signs of editing - I suspect Fly the Wind was once Fly the World. There are some other bits which sound a little teenagerish (eg "preconceived ideas were blown away")) but I suspect they were too hard to change without wrecking the song, which since it works beautifully, is understandable.
