They Weren't There Lyrics - Missy Higgins

Review The Song (14)

You breathed infinity into my world
and time was lost up in a cloud and in a whirl.
We dug a hole in the cool grey earth and lay there for the night.
Then you said, "wait for me we'll fly the wind,
we'll grow old and you'll be stronger without him" but oh,
now my world is at your feet. I was lost and I was found,
but I was alive and now I've drowned.
So now I will be waiting for the world to hear my song
so they can tell me I was wrong...

But they weren't there beneath your stare,
and they weren't stripped 'till they were bare of
any bindings from the world outside that room.
And they weren't taken by the hand
and led through fields of naked land
where any pre-conceived ideas were blown away...
so I couldn't say "no".

You sighed and I was lost in you, weeks could've past for all I knew.
You were the blanket of the over-world and so I couldn't say,
I wouldn't say "no". But they all said, "you're too young to even know,
just don't let it grow and you'll be stronger without him"
but oh, now, my world is at your feet. I was lost and I was found,
but I was alive and now I've drowned.
So now I will be waiting for the world to hear my song
so they can tell me I was wrong...

But they weren't there beneath your stare,
and they weren't stripped 'till they were bare
of any bindings from the world outside that room.
And they weren't taken by the hand and led through fields
of naked land where any pre-conceived ideas were blown away...

But they weren't there beneath your stare,
and they weren't stripped 'till they were bare
of any bindings from the world outside that room.
And they weren't taken by the hand and led through fields
of naked land where any pre-conceived ideas were blown away...
so I couldn't say "no".

Its a story of an affair and love | Reviewer: Rob | 1/25/11

The woman is married to someone who she is not happy with. The man is in love with her and wants her to realise a better life with him. They have a night together suspended from the reality of their situation where they make love and bathe in what could be. The world outside (family/friends etc..) would not approve but it heals her. We are left to wonder what happens.

This was my song. I was in love with a married woman, who was very badly treated. I had been with her years before and we had broken up, her family hated me (part of the reason for the break up) we fell in love again while she was still married but had no physical relationship, we were like this for 5 years, before I could no longer bear the way she was treated. I met her one evening and told her she should leave him to be with me. We spent the night together in blissful distance from the world outside. The next day we returned to reality. She left her husband, but ultimately not for me. I had saved her. In the end that was all that mattered. Believe it or not "They weren't there" came up on random, while we made love, it had been on a compliation I had been given and I had never heard it before. We both cried... a lot.

im a thinking, | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/10/10

there is girl who is in love with a man, and he has just saved her from another guy maybe he was supporting her or had showed her that he was treating her badly, the chorus is about when they had sex, and not is a demeaning way, but showing the true beauty of what it is. although maybe this man was too old for her or there was something else people didn't approve of but she loves him so much she stays he is the only thing that matters to her anymore and she is not going to give that up.

Friend only wants friendship? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/5/10

I see this girl who has a best friend, a boy. Before she meat him, her world was an empty space where nothing existed. When he came, she found something more, something she really wouldn't like to live without. (“You breathed infinity… stronger without him") When she's in too deep, she realizes that he is in love with her, and she drowns in confusion(“ now my world is… I was wrong”).

I believe the chorus signifies her apologizes and her defenses. They don’t know how good he is for her and they can’t be angry with her for staying with him – even though he might be better off without her (why “force” him to fall deeper). That’s why she can’t say “no” when he’s offering his company.

In the second verse, she has decided for staying with him as a friend and he has accepted this. Now, it’s the rest of the world who objects. They think that the distance between the two should grow, and they’ll be better without each other.

he was everthing to her | Reviewer: selina | 2/12/10

this song is beautiful....
it is not about a girl and a boy who had or have sexual problems in there relationship. it is about a girl who is in love with a MAN. and no one thinks the relation is a good ideah. but she is saying that no matter how they think he treats her or no matter how he treats her now.... they werent there in the begining when she fell in love with him, and either he is saying she is better without him or that wile she waits for him she will grow stronger and there bond will be greater. This boy is either a good influence and just too old and that is why all these ppl think this of them, or they think this because he treats her badly. but she is so in love with this man that he is the only thing in the world that is importan to her... it is just a very complex song you would have to ask missy herself what its intirty is about.

i think.. | Reviewer: rochelle. | 1/22/10

i think this song is about someone so blinded by love that they couldnt see that their partner was bad for them. they were warned by everyone, but didn't listen. but this song is almost in their defence.

"But they weren't there beneath your stare,
and they weren't stripped 'till they were bare of
any bindings from the world outside that room.
And they weren't taken by the hand
and led through fields of naked land
where any pre-conceived ideas were blown away...
so I couldn't say "no". "

basically saying that even though people could warn her, they never experienced how over powering/beautiful it was. it could be taken that she was pressured or simply that their relationship was so beautiful at the time. it also suggests in the beginning that the partner that has left her, claimed to be saving her from a previous failed relationship. perhaps he was a shoulder to cry on and things went from there.

"Then you said, "wait for me we'll fly the wind,
we'll grow old and you'll be stronger without him"

i do not believe, like other comments suggest, that this song refers to a relationship failed because the person only wanted sex. there are plenty of other reasons for a failed relationship based on other lies and broken promises and i believe the connotation of sex in this song just takes away from its beauty. it makes it seem to...crass i suppose.

but that's my view. :)

amazing | Reviewer: brooke | 10/19/09

I'm singing this song for my music performance at school, and to have had the opportunity to read all of these different views on this song, has helped me to understand and connect with it on a level I couldn't have imagined possible. I was debating with myself as to whether or not I should sing it, because I'm not sure if I have the ability to draw people into a song the way she does, with such simple, yet powerful technique, but I think that now that I understand it more, it will help me to deliver it (hopefully).

The fact that some of you obviously know what you're talking about is awesome, too. Thanks for your insight.
Wish me luck.

I think it's about a girl so blinded by love that she didn't realise that the boy only wanted her for sex. And she couldn't refuse him, even though she got warned. And she's trying to tell the world that they don't know how she felt bacause 'they weren't there' in her place.
But anyhow, I think it's a beautiful song

meaning of the song | Reviewer: ingy | 8/13/09

i think that song is about a girl that broke up with her boyfriend and then there's another boy was waiting for her and loves her and he told her'you'll be stronger without him' and she couldn't think of any excuse and here comes the part'i couldn't say no' but she tried to tell him that she's still in love with her ex and she's so confused...please comment :)

religious? | Reviewer: Chris | 4/27/09

i definitely got a religious vibe from this song. i dont think it necessarily is talking about a relationship with another person, but a relationship with god. now im not really into christian music and such, but i think this would be an example of some good christian music i can get into.

"But they all said, 'you're too young to even know,
just don't let it grow and you'll be stronger without him'
but oh, now, my world is at your feet. I was lost and I was found,
but I was alive and now I've drowned."

i feel it especially in this line. not necessarily drowning as a bad thing but drowning in the depths of god's grace.

im just hanging this out there as a possibility. songs can have many meanings and i think this one can fit for more than a few people. thanks for reading

love | Reviewer: kristie | 1/11/08
