They made up their minds
And they started packing
They left before the sun came up that day
An exit to eternal summer slacking
But where were they going Without ever knowing the way?
They drank up the wine
And they got to talking
They now had more important things to say
And when the car broke down They started walking
Where were they going without ever knowing the way?
CHORUS:
Anyone could see The road that they walk on is paved in gold
And It's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll Never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows Wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happier there today , today
The children woke up
And they couldn't find 'em
They Left before the sun came up that day
They just drove off
And left it all behind 'em
But Where were they going Without ever knowing the way?
Anyone could see The road that they walk on is paved in gold
And It's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll Never get hungry
They'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows Wandering off somewhere
They Won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happy there today , today (repeat)

Review about The Way Interpretation of song | Reviewer: Ann | 10/16/09
When I hear this song and read the lyrics it reminds me of my mentally disturbed husband who wants a way out of being a father and husband, and just wants to ride his motorcycle off and away without ever coming back. He sees his children waking up and finding him gone wondering where he went. He has no more responsibilities or anything. Not only has he been mentally sick, an alcoholic, smoker, former drug addict, with other addictions now, including whoring around, he cannot face his midlife years like a man, and now takes everything in life out on his wife and family because his mother disowned him and his brother and disinherited him in favor of convicted felon and a dog groomer....that's what I get out of this song. It's no wonder he loves it so much. Pray for me.

I never actually saw this song as being about a couple. I never knew the backstory, but that doesn't really change things for me.
Whenever I listen to this song, I think of a bunch of mafia-style guys in expensive, suave, black suits, fedoras, and sunglasses, sitting in a dimly-lit warehouse room around a little round wooden table. They're all just talking, and then they come to a decision and stand up. They head out in suave black cars onto a long, straight desert road with stone paving. The sun comes up, their cars stall, all the men get out, still in their expensive suits, and they all walk down the road towards the sun.
Highway represents escaping this system of chaos we created for ourselves. In the system we desire, money, wealth and prestige only to find it all meaningless in the end.. But the couple found wandering free they never got old.. Because each day of their new wandering freedom outside the system was always happy.. They felt eternally young and happy.. And escaping the desires for material wealth they found the highway (escape from it all) to be the real thing of TRUE VALUE.
The children represents the new mind jumping in the car again to ride in the system. Not really knowing the way (not wanting to listen to the parents like all young do - they keep driving in the care until they see the escape (the highway) definitely is the true value in life. Because escaping makes one feel truly free and each day no more worries.. Life is experienced .. The highway is living life and understanding life outside the capitalist material ridden society.

So as I recall hearing- that elderly couple were both suffering from psyco/degenerative problems(Alzheimers) They took off in the night(the ol girl called her daughter wonderin why it was 10 in the morning and the sun hadn't come up yet) The ol girl who would be the driver and her hubby both got in the car headid for their morning coffee at the gas station/cafe out on IH35 and proceeded North on IH35 staying ahead of authorities through various counties and states who,at the wishes of the ol flks children, were simply trying to apprehend the couple who apparently didn't have a clue as to where they were going...they were found at the bottom of a canyon in (Arkansas?)and the crash killed the ol man instantly but the ol girl had actually walked away from the crash and died nearby the wreck.......anyhow thas what I remember from the articles in the paper at that time...Rich Cross/ Hollywood Indians
I love this song. It is very well sung, It has been running through my head for days now.I always see this old couple just taking off and going where ever, spend the rest of the life they have really enjoying it. Not wasting a moment.
this song came out when i was 5 and i still ove it i know the lyrics and whoever thinks it is a crappy song should learn to get some music tastes because this is some of the best music from the late 90's awesome tune love the beat and the way the guy sings in the song yes its about a old couple going away but the song is awesome it has so many meanings
Too Much Inflation, Not Enough Social Security | Reviewer: Beth | 2/5/09
I envision an elderly couple who had had enough peanut butter sandwiches and cold January days. They took a bottle of wine to their trusty Buick in the old garage and fired up the engine with the doors and windows closed. They talked about the old times, how much they loved each other, and fell asleep, holding hands. Their kids, who had been too busy to take care of the old folks, beat themselves up...but they could have probably kept it from happening if they hadn't been so busy.
Oh well, that's just how I interpret it...
romeo and juliet | Reviewer: ashley | 12/1/08
i dont really care what the song is really truly about, but i think it sounds like a romeo and juliet kind of tale. a young couple ran off together and ended up either dying in an accident or committing suicide together.
It could still be about old people, because if they're old and grey, when they die, they'll go back to being youthful and they'll never go old and gray again.
Think deeper before you argue what has already been set in stone.
This song is just awesome. This is just what rock'n'roll is all about. Great lyrics, great beat. The whole thing has a kind of "British Invasion" feeling. The story behind it is a little sinister but is a song that you can't only hear once.
I would like to shake the hand of the man who wrote it.
"Hats off"
