The Tide Lyrics - Spill Canvas

Review The Song (75)

And there's three, count 'em-three
Children playing on the beach.
They were eager to learn,
To be taught, and to teach

There's Veronica;
She's biting her lip
As she watches the waves turn white at the tip.
And there's Vaida;
Radiating with joy,
And luckily she still can't stand the sight of a boy.
And lastly there's Dave;
His hair dances in the wind,
And he's wondering what love is,
And why it has to end.

And he can't understand
How everyone goes on breathing when true love ends.

His mother whispers quietly;
Heaven's not a place that you go when you die.
It's that moment in life when you actually feel alive
So live for the moment,
And take this advice, live by every word,
Love is just a hoax so forget anything that you have heard
And live for the moment now.

And there's three, count 'em-three
Children growing on the beach.
They were eager to learn,
To be taught, and to teach

There's Veronica;
She's licking her lips
As she waits for her real, first passionate kiss.
And there's Vaida;
She can't admit her jealousy
Of her sister Veronica, and how she's so pretty.(and how she's so pretty)
And lastly there's Dave;
Still sitting on the dock,
He ponders his life, and he skips his rocks.
And he wonders when his father will return,
But he's not coming back.

And he can't understand
How everyone goes on breathing when true love ends.
His mother whispers quietly;
Heaven's not a place that you go when you die,
It's that moment in life when you actually feel alive,
So live for the moment.
And take this advice, live by every word,
Love is just a hoax so forget everything that you have heard.

(Forget everything)

And there's three, count 'em-three
Children missing from the beach.
They were eager to learn,
To be taught, and to teach.

But the sad thing
Is that they never lived passed the age of fifteen
Due to neglect from their mother,
Who was bed ridden by her ex-lover, their father.
And she didn't even notice, or pay much attention
As the tide came in and swept her three into the ocean.
Now all her advice, it seems useless.

Well, heaven's not a place that you go when you die.
It's that moment in life when you touch your edge you feel alive.
So live for the moment.
And take this advice, live by every word,
Love's completely real,
So forget anything that you have heard,
And live for the moment now.

Beautiful song, but is the final verse correct? | Reviewer: Lauren | 2/2/13

I love this song. There so much substance and symbolism in it. However I'm not sure if the lyrics in the last verse are correct. It reads on this site:

"Well, heaven's not a place that you go when you die.
It's that moment in life when you touch your edge you feel alive.
So live for the moment.
And take this advice, live by every word,
Love's completely real,
So forget anything that you have heard,
And live for the moment now."

Are we sure that he isn't saying "Heaven IS a place that you go when you die and its the moments in life when you touch your edge you feel alive?" Because the second part changed from what the chorus was originally. First it said that love isn't real, but now it's saying that it is. Wouldn't it be the same in the first half of the chorus too? This singer doesn't pronounce his words very well so it's possible that the person misheard this section of lyrics.

Song meaning? | Reviewer: Jessie | 1/28/12

The 'three' represent the different things affecting the 'mothers' relationship. Veronica is the side of passion and romance, Vada the side of jealousy and innocence and Dade is the hidden fears. As the three grow up, it symbolises the relationship coming to an end, the tide sweeping in and taking´╗┐ the three symbolises the end of the relationship, and the idea of the mother being bed-ridden by her ex-lover is showing the effect that all of this has had on her.

Incredible... | Reviewer: chris | 1/12/11

This song is just... well words can't describe how good this song is!

As far as the meaning behind the song goes, it's up for interpretation. The waves may have swept the kids away actually physically killing them, or you can take the phrase: "And she didn't even notice, or pay much attention
As the tide came in and swept her three into the ocean", Ocean being a metaphor for the world, meaning that they become distant from their mother, or maybe even the kids are taken away from the mother!

I think that by the ocean they do mean the world. I always play little scenes in my head. I imagine the ways that Veronica, Vaida, and Dade "died". Not literally but like how they got swept up in life. Also by the way it isn't Dave it is Dade. I know this because I am naming my first son Dade. I will probably name my first daughter Vaida. I love those names!!!

this is a very touching song,

it is about a mother who is despressed from her ex husband becuase he just left her. There whole life her children have been told that love isnt real and to not belive in it, just live in the moment. One day the children where playin by the ocean while their mother wasnt paying attition insted being too depressed over her ex lover. The children drowned and died. The mom then comes running out noticing that the children are gone screaming that love is real, it does excist.

i love this song so much infact im choseing it do a project on.

Ocean | Reviewer: andylee | 8/10/10

I guess the "ocean" he talks about is the world.

It may even be different from what I think, but... I don't see as if the children have really drowned. I see it as if their mother didn't use the moment they had together properly, and now that the ocean has gotten to them, they're on their on in the world, as adults, and neither of them really know what love is 'cause their mother taught them it didn't exist.

Meaning | Reviewer: Ali | 6/14/10

I first heard this song when my friend Morgan played it on guitar, dedicating it to me. I nearly cried, it was so intense...being swept by the tides with out ever knowing love.The funny thing is, she's the one who had the bad experiences, not me. More than anything, I think this song is about letting yourself love and be loved, despite the pain that could come. What's life without love?

great song. but the lyrics are "it's that moment in life when you touch her and you feel alive" not "it's that moment in life when you touch your edge you feel alive" that doesn't even make sense. look it up you'll find the right lyrics anywhere else.

I got the lyrics,

Heaven's not a place that you go when you die.
It's that moment in life when you actually feel alive So live for the moment

tattoo'd in the shape of a star on my back, i tell people what it says and they've never heard of the band, i feel bad that they can't truly understand the meaning without listening to it

Stunningly beautiful. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/11/09

I heard this before; and I thought, wow it sounds sad... so, curious, I looked up the lyrics - and - my eyes watered up.
This is so beautiful. And sad. I'm having a hard time at home right now, but after reading this I feel alot more relaxed; those three kids, real or not, made me realize people are way worse off than me.
I feel humbled.
So beautiful. I'm recommending everyone I know to listen to this.

omg this song kicks ass, i can relate soo much.
my mom left my other mom. so yeah it sucks ...
i dont have a dad since i was adopted ,, but when my mom #2 left, my mom #1 totally fell apart and thought about herself more than she thought about me and my hamsters

life | Reviewer: ben | 8/11/09

so as i was searching through limewire, i came across this song. its beautiful and the melody makes my eyes water. i had this friend once, who had a very bad life.. kinda like the kids in the book "series of unfortunate events" yeah it was horrible they had this little baby with one tooth.. who eventually crawled off an hotel balcony.. yeah it wasnt pretty. so now listening to this song. it just makes me think about how some people have a worse-r life than me... i really feel for those pupils i hope they all go far in life
