Reviews about The Supremes Sing Country, Western & Pop Strangely Appeaing | Reviewer: Al Smith | 5/10/09 A bizarre but well-crafted album, it was recorded before the group's long string of hits with Holland-Dozier-Holland, during a time when Motown couldn't come up with a formula to push them to the top. Producer Clarence Paul (who later had great success with Stevie Wonder) tried this approach, possibly inspired by the crossover success which Ray Charles enjoyed with country tunes. While the plan didn't work, and most of the songs aren't really "country," and all lack the definitive Motown sound, there are a few gems here, especially "It Makes No Difference Now," which stands alone as the only song on which each member takes the lead on a verse. It truly demonstrates that The Supremes were far more than just Diana Ross and two backup singers. Most of the backgrounds are padded out with Andantes (Motown's in-house session gals) but Mary and Florence are layered prominently over them for a very nice balance.
