The Sporting Life Lyrics - The Decemberists

Review The Song (3)

I fell on the playing field
the work of an errant heel
the din of the crowd and the loud commotion
went deafening silence and stopped emotion
the season was almost done
we managed it 12 to 1
so far I had known no humiliation
in front of my friends and close relations

There's my father looking on
and there's my girlfriend arm in arm
with the captain of the other team
and all of this is clear to me
they condescend and fix on me a frown
how they love the sporting life

And father had had such hopes
for a son who would take the ropes
sponsored links
and fulfill all his old athletic aspirations
but apparently now there's some complications
but while I am lying here
trying to fight the tears
I'll prove to the crowd that I come out stronger
though I think I might lie here a little longer

There's my coach he's looking down
the disappointment in his knitted brow
"I should've known,"
he thinks again
"I never should have put him in."
he turns to throw the lemonade away
and breathes in deep
the sporting life
the sporting life
the sporting life
how he loves...

There's my father looking on
and there's my girlfriend arm in arm
with the captain of the other team
and all of this is clear to me
they condescend and fix on me a frown
the sporting life
the sporting life
the sporting life
how they love...

Actually, he or she is pretty right. A lot of The Decemberist's songs are commentaries on our own society. It's a story, yes, but a story with meaning. If you use just a little bit of analysis, it'll go miles! Apply some extra thought, and if you have the need to listen to music without thinking, go listen to some Classic Rock. It might help :)

yes, our "modern society" totally places too much emphasis on sports! hilarious! look, lady (you're obviously a lady), athletics are literally as old as war. this song is not some social commentary on the emphasis of sports in society. unless "mariner's revenge song" is a commentary on the nature of a humanity's capability to withstand personal torment in order to ensure the torment of another. or maybe it's just a STORY. colin meloy is well-versed in classic literature and was raised on bands like the pogues - another story-telling band. but hey, whatever, go as far down the rabbit hole as you'd like.

Great Song with an even better message | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/26/08

this song is fantastic. and everything it stands for and conveys is so much deeper than any song you have ever heard. it speaks volumes for our society and the way we focus so much energy and attention on sports in this country. its quite sad...and all so true and commonplace.
