the Smiths were formed in Manchester, England during the

------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
Right after I finished ' The Perks of Being a Wallflower ' , I straight away went back to the song listing for the mixtape.
And to be honest this song, is just so good. It related so much to the novel, same with the other songs. I'm so glad I have read it.
I'm now going to have to re-read the novel soon, since i'm entering High School just like he did.
This song, just makes me think of a better world.
It's nice and peaceful.

------ About the song THIS CHARMING MAN performed by The Smiths
i never actually cared to look for an actual interpretation of the lyrics. but it seems to me that the 'charming man' appears patronising. it seems like there is a difference in class between the two. from experience the upper classes have been known to be a little condescending in this situation. whatever interpretation you have, it works may it be positive for your husband or negative for somebody else.

------ About the song HOW SOON IS NOW ? performed by The Smiths
i think this song is about loneliness. its kinda obvious. and how shyness and our own faults stop us from letting people see how special we really are. and how frustrating it can get when you cant find somebody and how horrible that is.
Love it. | Reviewer: SleepyWabbit
------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
Actually, yeah, I looked up the song after reading the book. And I like the song a lot. It has this calm thing about it.. a real kinda soothing effect.
I listened to it a lot of times today and kinda understood the words and all... I think it's sung by a dying child. Everyone has a different viewpoint.. and I wonder why, but I feel as if this is some dying kid.. you know, the kind that has some terminal illness or something similar. It's... poignant, that's what it is.
All in all, I love this song.

------ About the song I KNOW IT'S OVER performed by The Smiths
There are times when this song is picked out of the playlist shuffle and catches me completely off guard. When that happens, I'm close to bursting in tears. It goes straight to the soul. Amazing song.

------ About the song ASK performed by The Smiths
I don't believe you people got so far with trying to analyze this song. There's no bomb, and no world war metaphors. The song is quite simple. He sings about people's way of missing life because of fears, and about truth and identification of one to another are the way to bring two together. He just wants to help someone by opening him up.
Oh and the Luxembourg girl is just a joke about compromise for what finds you when you're shy...

------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
yes like most of you others i have read the perks of being a wallflower, first when i was only in 5th grade and again recently, i'm now in 9th grade. and yes that is where i found the song. i can relate to charlie a lot and since he mentioned how much he liked this song i had to look it up...the first time i heard it i honestly cried my eyes out to the point where i could barely breathe. no other song has provoked that kind of emotion from me. it's an amazing song and the book is just as moving so to anyone who hasn't read it yet i highly recommend doing so. and to anyone who disses the book or song, well that's just your loss.

"IT SAYS NOTHING TO ME ABOUT MY LIFE"
This is such a good line because its so true, I much prefer songs that have meaning. Unfortuantly most of the stuff in the 'charts' doesn't mean anything, but there you go.
Anway... this is my favourite Smiths song *my town gets a mention woo*

------ About the song HOW SOON IS NOW ? performed by The Smiths
It's great reading all this debate about The Smiths. I do wish people could see beyond the stereotypes, I'm a working class Northern English kid grown up to be a middle class commuter belt Londoner, and spent a month last year in Florida. Believe me it takes all sorts on both sides of the pond. The differences are interesting not annoying.
I love all of The Smiths stuff, and can carry out whole conversations in snatches of their lyrics. So can lots of people around my age (48). To me Morrissey often introduces ambiguity into his lyrics - often by subtly changing the odd word in a rhyme, or sometimes saying a word that rhymes with one he doesn't say, in order to plant in the mind an idea that he hasn't actually discussed. In this way the songs become open to multiple interpretations - and I feel that this is deliberate.
I think that the song is about all the things people have said and probably more, but the trick is to simultaneously take the lyrics as deep and meaningful, whilst just turning up the volume, dancing and realising it's just a song.
As E.M Forster observed - "Only Connect the power and the prose, and both shall be exalted"

------ About the song HOW SOON IS NOW ? performed by The Smiths
This song is about the yearning for love, and the desire to be loved. As someone below has also mentioned, im surprised that no one has picked up the references to being gay. Shock ,horror, Morrissey is gay, and like a lot of young ppl in that situation, probably had a hard time coming to terms with what being gay meant. 'There's a club if you'd like to go'......... Back in then 80's being gay was not as acceptable as it is today. Coming out opened a young person up to abuse, ridicule and often violence. Many gay/confused peoples only chance at any kind of gay contact was via the one and probably only gay club in town, where more often or no they would go, on their own, be absolutely terrified at the prospect of being seen in a gay club, stand on their own, talk to no one then go home, ALONE. Simple as that! The song talks about his pain and not being able to find love......

------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
So I'm 36 years old and just read TPOBAW. Yes, an "adult" can relate to a "Teen Emo" book. We all went through similar experiences it doesn't just go away.
About the music: Of course I had heard of the Smiths and know a bit of their music. But I did not know this song and had to check it out. It is amazing and beautiful. To all those complaining about people finding the song from the book. Would you rather they not find the song at all? I'm glad people find art through other art.
With that said, and as another example of art through art... I would recommend to anyone who enjoyed the book and this song to check out a lesser-known Oasis B-side. (seriously, Oasis!)
"Talk Tonight" which can easily be found on "The Masterplan" rarities collection. Or search your favorite MP3 site. Enjoy.

Sing me to Sleep.
I'm tired and I, want to go to bed
I guess I could say this song helps me not feel so bad about life or even about myself. Sometimes I lie awake feeling like the most lonliest person on the planet but this song it just, makes me like its okay to feel that way...as weird as it may sound. Either way The Smiths are incredible just like this song :)
Irony. | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song THIS CHARMING MAN performed by The Smiths
Not writing any sort of analysis to the song in question ...
I'm just amused because this song makes me think of one person only. Someone with whom I passionately connected over the course of 8 days, someone I will probably never see again ... at least for many years.
It's just ironic because his name is Keith, a name that another reviewer mentioned, ha. I guess we all have our charming men ...
Sad & Depressing | Reviewer: George
------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
This song is of a dismal and discouraging character. It has a depressing message and causes one to regret and have sorrow. I personally do not enjoy listening to songs of that nature. It connects to TPOBAW because Charlie is an unexposed individual taking life at full force, and learning about things that he did not even have of knowledge of.
Yet another intervention... | Reviewer: Poeticus
------ About the song HOW SOON IS NOW ? performed by The Smiths
APHEX Twin is completely right here. And for those who appear to be still fighting the "War of 1812," please understand that whether you are a "limey" or a "yank", working class or not, Manchester is an economically depressed (emphasis on "depressed") city and Morrissey is merely writing about what he knows. The loss of belonging, social akwardness and fear of rejection are difficult enough to take when you live in a sunny, beautiful place... But Manchester? Opressive steele-grey sky; even the brick and stone and mortar have taken on hues of grey... Imaging a creative mind being locked inside such a prison and you have Morrissey... And so as not to offend, I am an imigrant from Manchester living in Florida....
Really? | Reviewer: Poeticus
------ About the song GIRLFRIEND IN A COMA performed by The Smiths
I simply ove the fact that this song causes so many people to THINK (a rare occurence in this age)! I believe as one previous reader suggests, that this is just Morrissey entertaining us with no "hidden" meaning. Rather, I believe the song stands on its own. There have been many questions about Morrissey's sexuality over the years and he, of his own admission has stated that he is "bored" with both men and women. I believe that he may, in fact, be one of the world's few "non-sexuals". It really makes little difference. They are, after all, simply labels that many of us use to establish our comfort zones. Enough of educating the populace for the moment; Perhaps he is simply relatin g things he heard or saw growing up and relating to the public in verse. Often, writers look around themselves at the relationships and interactions they see and then take "poetic license" by creating the back story. So, if you have suffered through this monstrous ramble, I applaude you! Tell your literature professor I said you deserve an "A"!

------ About the song HAND IN GLOVE performed by The Smiths
Hand in Glove and This Charming Man were the first songs I heard by Smiths (I was in college at the time) and I've been a fan ever since. Great stuff. Unique, sometimes funny, sometimes confusing, but always a great sound.
Its really very simple | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song HOW SOON IS NOW ? performed by The Smiths
I was watching roger waters on tv the other day and he said he had recently listened to the album dark side of the moon and his reaction to the lyrics was 'how did I ever get away with it' and described the lyrics as being very lower sixth i.e. childish in a 17 year old's way of being childish. Morrissey often expresses a feeling of little self worth and the lyrics 'i am the heir to nothing in particular' is merely a dry humored way of saying just that. Everything is just a set up for one of the most poignant lyrics of popular music, 'I am human and I need to be loved just like anybody else does' I am surprised that no one has talked about the feeling that many gay people have that they are just as normal as everyone else and need love just as everyone does, but the song itself speaks to every awkward person who cant find it regardless of sexual orientation.
Bloody great song | Reviewer: Taylor
------ About the song HOW SOON IS NOW ? performed by The Smiths
I definantly associate with this song as one about being an awkward person with little self esteem not fitting in with other crowds, being an outcast.
Everybody has there own interpretations that all make sense
and i definantly don't appreciate the bloody britts mocking americans,
obviously you are not well cultured and don't know a thing about the american lifestyle, you probably think we all listen to country music and love football, but if i based my opinion of the britts on all that i've heard of them, i would say you all have rotten teeth, drink tea constantly, are arrogant and pompous jerks, and are cool (because of the sex pistols).
