------ About the song HOW SOON IS NOW ? performed by The Smiths

He's talking about being too shy to approach potential mates in clubs, and his frustration at continually failing to pull. Its nothing to do with being gay. If you think that you should read the words and stop telling people to "wake up" to a stupid conclusion

------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths

Like many people, I found this song through Perks. No, I did not know of it when I was young or something, I'm 13. But I love it anyway. And I think it's beautiful that great music, in any day or age, can touch someone's heart and stay with them forever. And I agree, I feel like it has more of an 'accepting death' feel to it rather than suicidal. Whatever it truly means, this song has touched my heart in ways that most songs I hear don't. I hope people keep listening to it.

------ About the song CEMETRY GATES performed by The Smiths

I very much enjoy this song, and the more I listen to it the more I hear. The Smiths have never, repeat, NEVER been one of my favourite bands as a whole but I can't help but adore a few real gems in their discography.. this song being one of them. If you like this, you'd probably enjoy Girlfriend in a Coma..

In some ways it makes me feel that Train's Hey Soul Sister was heavily influenced by this track.. but really, who knows?

Its perfect for those days when you just want to gloat at friends who adore Keats and Yeats but have no time for Wilde who remains probably one of my favourites.

------ About the song WELL I WONDER performed by The Smiths

And I think it goes beyond simple unrequited love, that's far too cliche for The Smiths and certainly Morrissey himself. But who knows, maybe he isn't as big an enigma as he seems.

------ About the song THIS CHARMING MAN performed by The Smiths

It's about meeting his future self! An ambitious young man who came from nothing and made something of himself. One may argue how he could meet his future self? But let's not pamper life's complexities! In other words don't read too much in to that bit just take it for what it is. Arts for arts sake!

Amazing | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song THAT JOKE ISN'T FUNNY ANYMORE performed by The Smiths

I think that, in addition to being about suicide, it specifically refers to suicide from overdosing on heroin.
"When you laugh about people who feel so
Very lonely
Their only desire is to die" refers to the sense of invulnerability that many musicians feel, even as they have seen other people die of overdosing on heroin

"It was dark as I drove the point home
And on cold leather seats
Well, it suddenly struck me
I just might die with a smile on my
Face after all"
The point refers to the syringe, and the smile on his face refers to the effects of heroin on the body.

These two verses, combined with the trailing off and repetition towards the end of the song give the impression of someone slipping into a heroin-induced coma.

It's about the light of love | Reviewer: Jeff
------ About the song THERE IS A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT performed by The Smiths

It's a beautiful song that likens light to love. And how love burns and or fizzles out. For anyone this can be relevant, the song is about a person, who is so happy in a moment with a person that if both their lives ended in that moment their love would never burn out, and hence there is a light that never goes out. For morrissey in particular the light burning out is even more inevitable because of his asexuality or homosexuality but he does not say this because this song is relevant to anyone who has a barrier to their long term happiness, who can be only truly happy within a moment, and hence if they died in that moment they would more likely due happy than if they didn't

------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths

Louder Than Bombs was a huge part of the soundtrack of my youth (a long time ago). My 15 y/o niece recently introduced me to The Perks, and I loved it for the same reason I first fell in love with the Smiths oh so long ago--because it speaks eloquently of the alienation and loneliness that plague young people during the so-called best days of their lives. Listening to the Smiths, I had a sense that someone understood, and was not merely trying to sugarcoat and sanitize the perils of youth. I am glad The Perks is doing that for another generation, now. I'm also glad it's helping people find some great music. Art does save lives!

------ About the song HAND IN GLOVE performed by The Smiths

I though the line

"Yes, we may be hidden by rags"

"and we may eaten by bears"

I did, however, make out

"Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care"

which may be the best line in the song.

------ About the song THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE performed by The Smiths

Morrissey did exactly what he planned. He wrote an amazing song about a father who returns to raise his son but in a way that ignited an extreme reaction in the music press and beyond. What better way to introduce your band to the world. One of Morrissey/Marr's greatest creations. If you read the lyrics without the thought of child abuse, you'll come away with a totally different view. So easily said!
