DISBANDED: August 1987
Acclaimed by many as the most important UK band of the 80s,
the Smiths were formed in Manchester, England during the
spring of 1982. Morrissey (b. Steven Patrick Morrissey, 22

(b. John Maher, 31 October 1963, Ardwick, Manchester,
England) originally combined as a songwriting partnership,
and only their names appeared on any contract bearing the
title "Smiths". Morrissey had previously played for a
couple of months in the Nosebleeds and also rehearsed and
auditioned with a late version of Slaughter And The Dogs.
After that he wrote reviews for Record Mirror and penned a
couple of booklets on the New York Dolls and James Dean.

------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
I have read this book at least a million times and for me this book really touches home, it showed me how deeply i connect with "Charlie". This book does not need to be disected it bluntly speaks for itself. I have not heard of The Smiths but because of the reference that they were used in this book it made me curious to research what reasons Stephen Chbosky had to mention them and this song. Just by reading the lyrics alone I now see why Stephen had choosen them. I am heading out today to find any and all of The Smiths albums. This song, just by reading it, honestly made me feel infinite.
no comments..... Such a powerful song. Short and simple. Beautiful melody and the lyrics will mean a lot to those lonely people out there..... Morrissey knew how to write how real people felt. 80s but true today. magnificent stuff.
typically brilliant music and lyrics. I always felt the song was about someone commiting suicide in the car. on hearing it now I still think that, but like many of Moz's lyrics can have many meanings. the bass on this song is awesome.

------ About artist/band The Smiths
...I never wanted to lkie them in the 80s....but the quality of the music and lyrics was incomparable then, and even to this say, it remains difficult to match. Morrissey is surely one of the greatest musical poets, and Marr can write just brilliant guitar riffs and melodies. Not played much on the radio nowadays, mainly as much of their work failed to be commercially successful. Yet as anyone that knows their music will immediately place them very high in top 10 rankings of best bands...

to the person below me: i'm sorry but i don't see how knowing a song through a book is pathetic. It's touching that an author would love a song so much that they include it into their book so readers can relate better to the book. And yes, that is how i learned about the song...and i'm only halfway through the book.

------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
It's quite pathetic that most of you only know the song through a childish book. And yes, I would rather these people didn't find the song at all. Also, you people who apparently put this song on repeat for a few hours before bed and sob, try seeing a psychologist.

------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
People tend to read too far into Morrissey's lyrics sometimes. The song is clearly about a lonely person who want's to die ("I really want to go"). It really cannot be any clearer. Those who found this song through that book, go buy the album Louder Than Bombs. It is filled with great tracks like this one.

------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
i must admit, i had never even heard of The Smiths until i read THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER. i listened to this particular song first, and fell in love with them. i listened to so many more of their songs and now they are on my playlist for a literature project. (on a less important note, my crush loves them ^.^)
THANK YOU, CHARLIE! (:

------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
Yeah I have to admit I listen to the Smiths because of my love for "Charlie", my fictional character soul mate. I play around with some friends in a kind of band, we usually just mess around covering Bob Dylan or the like, some original folk bluesy stuff and we have our own little private cover of this song. I have heard very few songs as perfect as this, and if you like the vibe of this song listen to the original Bob Dylan version of Knocking on Heaven's Door. (I promise, that's a Dylan song where you can understand him.) Much the same vibe. I love that so many other people love The Perks of Being a Wallflower by the way. Also good, Rule of the Bone by Russel Banks.

It IS 'bomb' and there's a subtext here... | Reviewer: Darren
------ About the song ASK performed by The Smiths
First of all it is 'the bomb'. Never mind the subject, just listen to the sound of the word he's saying. It's quite clearly "the bomb"! The context of the song is the eighties and the Cold War. Naturally for young people today it's gonna be hard to understand, but any teenager in the 80s would have completely understood the dreadful, nerveshaking, black comedy of THAT line.
Also, as with many Moz lyrics theres a delicious subtext going on here, and that's one of homosexuality. The narrator is cajoling his would-be gay lover. He clearly thinks this person is in the closet ("Spending warm Summer days indoors") poinlessly attemping to have a girl/boy relationship ("Writing frightening verse, To a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg") when THEY could be together. If only this boy wasn't so scared of embracing his gayness. Hence the allusions to shyness, coyness and the very subtle "Is there something you'd like to try? Ask me I won't say no, how could I?" And, maybe even these overtures are not strong enough, for our narrator pulls no punches with the final what-have-you-got-to-lose? gambit about nuclear war.
It is a beautiful love song full of freedom and hope. But with that 'bomb' sting in the tail. Genius.

How can you NOT think this song is about suicide? What a classic Smiths song....I listen to these old tunes and almost laugh at how pathetic the music industry has become now. Nobody can touch this stuff in terms of pure song writing, emotion, melody, etc.

------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
The Smiths probably don't care what you say about their song... although they may be entertained by how many people know it now through a medium that isn't their own. i think it's funny that a book has touched so many people and caused them to go and find a song.
I love that, I think it's incredible.
I adore the smiths, and i've never read the perks of being a wallflower, but i might now...
I think this song IS about suicide... but that's just how i see it, how i relate to it.
If you like this song because you found it in the book, you should listen to more of their songs. They're brilliant <3
I grew up with these guys playing the background of my life(when nirvana and the cure werent). they're really sweet.

------ About the song WELL I WONDER performed by The Smiths
I interpret the song as formerly stated, about not being noticed about someone who you are very much in love with. Someone who you look at as often as you can, but often without the person in question noticing.
The way the lyrics are written reminds me of some of Radiohead's later B-sides, and live numbers, particularly "True Love Waits" and "Gagging Order". Amnesiac's "Knives Out" also comes to mind. It is always great to hear some of Thom Yorke's inspiration. :)

and I always thought that it was about loneliness and fears that do not let you to live the way the other people do. it's strange for me to read that this is about gay people. I think that it doesn't really matter who consider himself as a main hero of this song. almost anyone can feel something like this.
This song, i feel shows exaclty what The Smiths are about, they sing so controversially, yet beautifully. Does anyone apart from Morrissey know exaclty what this song is about? I personally dont think it is about child abuse, i feel it is about love from different angles, as weel as a father who left his son and now is coming back and felt a surge of love hense 'never never never again' meaning he will never leave again. I think this song also shows protection over something vunerable and beautiful. One of their best!

Song Meaning and Perks of Being a Wallflower | Reviewer: Emma
------ About the song ASLEEP performed by The Smiths
This some is about someone who is extremely lonely and is talking about suicide (that would be the falling asleep part).
Don't try to wake me in the morning
'Cause I will be gone
-(meaning he'll be dead)
I just wanted to say this because tons of people are putting theories out and, of course I can't be certain because I'm not the writer of the song, but I am almost positive of the meaning because I feel the exact same way.
Also, about the Perks of Being a Wallflower, I thought that the other of that book was extremely creative in putting that song into the book because I think they relate so well and it's interesting to find something outside of the book that seems like it's just another chapter or something... great book if you haven't read it, I recommend it.
Great Song | Reviewer: Matt
------ About the song HOW SOON IS NOW ? performed by The Smiths
The song ain't about being gay, politics or God - to me, it's about crippling shyness that holds you back from showing your true self. I completely relate to this song - despite having many friends and going out sometimes, it's something I get frustrated with and obviously Morrissey feels the same way.
