I love the dark and sinister story of an elusive heartbreaker. The song makes me think of two things; a vampire and a heartbreaker. Who knows, it could be both: a vampire heartbreaker! It seems as though there is passion between the lovers when they are together. Yet as the title of the song suggests, that all changes when they are apart. He claims to "disappear" which leaves the listener to decide if he means that literally or figuratively in the sense that there are no monogamous ties holding them together (Out of sight out of mind). There also seems to be an innocence, or maybe just ignorance on the part of his lover, as if she doesn't realize that she is not the "only one." The mask is a widely used symbol for personality, the face we put on to show the world, or in this case the one he puts on for her. This suggests two things; 1 that he is merely playing a part for her and 2 that he is completely different when she's gone. Kind of a ruthless way to play the game, but not too uncommon in the dating world I think. I love how this song songs good on any level. One can take it lightly and just enjoy the rocking guitar riff (a la Billy Idol) and one can also delve into the psychological meanings that may or may not be hidden in these words.
