The signal is subtle
We pass just close enough to touch
No questions, no answers
We know by now to say enough
With only simple words
With only subtle turns
The things we feel alone for one another
There is a secret that we keep
I won't sleep if you won't sleep
Because tonight may be the last chance we'll be given
We are compelled to do what we must do
We are compelled to do what we have been forbidden
So I won't sleep if you won't sleep tonight
Our act of defiance
We keep this secret in our blood
No paper or letters
We pass just close enough to touch
We love in secret names
We hide within our veins
The things that keep us bound to one another
There is a secret that we keep
I won't sleep if you won't sleep
Because tonight may be the last chance we'll be given
We are compelled to do what we must do
We are compelled to do what we have been forbidden
Until the last resilient hope
Is frozen deep inside my bones
And this broken fate has claimed me
And my memories for its own
Your name is pounding through my veins
Can't you hear how it is sung?
And I can taste you in my mouth
Before the words escape my lungs
And I'll whisper only once...
There is a secret that we keep
I won't sleep if you won't sleep
Because tonight may be the last chance we'll be given
We are compelled to do what we have to
We are compelled to do what we have been forbidden
'Cause you will be somebody's girl
And you will keep each other warm
But tonight I am feeling cold

Review about The Secret's In The Telling subtle | Reviewer: chris | 8/1/09
I think it's simply about two people who want each other, yet cannot have a relationship because the "girl" is already in a relationship. It's a secret and an act of defiance. They must do what they feel even if it's wrong.
Perfect song | Reviewer: Chris | 6/15/09
This song reminds me a lot of the relationship with a friend of mine - basically we're f*ck buddies. We don't let on to the rest of our friends what we're up to, and I think a lot of the passion that we feel is because we know it could be the last chance we get to do it.
So moving... | Reviewer: Winged | 4/5/09
This song is so moving... I think it's referring to a taboo relationship, but we don't have enough proof to say what type it is. Somehow, I interpreted it as incest between siblings, cousins, or something because it keeps mentioning the blood link.
Such a great song.
Hmmm... | Reviewer: Luna | 3/26/09
I agree with Liliana, but I will take this one step further and say that this song could be a little more broad and say it fits with just about any kind of love relationship that is normally taboo-ed.
I love DC, and this is another song, by them, I love. They aren't really anything special until you take the time to listen to the lyrics of thei songs, and then it hits you how powerful they really are, which I think is neat.
This is about more than you know | Reviewer: Jon | 1/10/09
I think when Chris speaks of a forbidden compulsion he is speaking of the love between an adult and a child. Relationships like this have been around since the dawn of time, and it's only been in the last couple centuries that we as a society choose not to accept it. Good for you Liliana for sharing that. It's absolutely what this song is about!!
...Marquette... | Reviewer: Ashley | 12/7/08
I believe this song is about 2 people who are very close friends. They know that they can never be together, but they share a secret romance anyway. Each of them may have a significant other. But they somehow always fall back on each other when one is needing more affection. They don't need to talk about the feelings they share. They know they are there.
<3 Amazing.
the secret is in the telling | Reviewer: snow maiden | 7/4/07
i love the poetry and the powerful words used in this song.. it's about the subtle affections shared between lovers who cant say their feelings out loud to each other... reminds me of my AlexAn.
So true. | Reviewer: Catherine | 7/1/07
DC's music may not sound great at first, but once you listen, really listen to their lyrics.. that feeling you get is unparalleled. DC's music is simply amazing.
this song is a symbol of the single most important relationship i have had in my adolescence. it is the story of the boy i love and myself who fell in love against all of the critics and downfalls. i was 16, and he was 22, but we didn't care. the whole relationship was a shared secret, but it made it all the more exciting. i got this cd for my 17th birthday from jason, and we heard this song, and looked wide eyed at each other. this song cuts deep, it's worth a listen.
if you are in a forbidden relationship, this is your anthem.
and "we are compelled to do what we have been forbidden" was my senior quote for the yearbook.
