The Rose Lyrics - Bette Midler

Review The Song (8)

Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower
And you, its only seed

It's the heart, afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream, afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul, afraid of dying
That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun's love
In the spring becomes the rose

This song has great meaning to my family as it has been played at many of out families weddings, including mine. During the singing of this song at our wedding my wife and I handed red roses to our parents and grandparents, as well as white roses for our grandparents that had passed away. This song is one of my favorite songs, and we just recently gave our daughter the middle name of Rose.

This was my grandparents' song. My grandmother recently passed away after losing her second battle with breast cancer, and before she died she was in a wheelchair.

One day at church, one of her friends played The Rose for her and my grandpa, and my grandma said she was going to dance along. Her friend thought she was just going to sway back and forth in her wheelchair but my grandma said, "Well? What are you waiting for?? Help me up!"

So she and my grandpa danced to the song for one last time, and this song will always remind me of her. I love you, Grandma. RIP <3

It is the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live.
It is NOT the song afraid of dying, that never learns to live - that just doesn't make sense...
The way I interpret it, the soul afraid of dying is preoccupied with death and doesn't have the time or will to live....

great song | Reviewer: ellie | 2/17/11

This song will always remind me of the movie 'Napoleon Dynamite' because the 'Happy Hands' club, which does sign language made a dance to this and performed it in front of their class. At the part where it says, "Some say love, it is a hunger.." one of the jocks in the class laughs, and I will always remember that.
