The Pot

Who are you to wave your finger?
You must have been outta your head
Eye hole deep in muddy waters
You practically raised the dead

Rob the grave to snow the cradle
Then burn the evidence down
Soapbox house of cards and glass so
Don't go tossin' your stones around

You must have been high
You must have been high
You must have been

Foot in mouth and head up ass-hole
Whatcha talkin' 'bout?
Difficult to dance 'round this one
'til you pull it out, boy

You must have been so high
You must have been so high

Steal, borrow, refer, save your shady inference
Kangaroo done hung the juror with the innocent

Now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo
Got lemon juice up in your eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle

You must have been high high
You must have been high high

Who are you to wave your finger?
So full of it
Eye balls deep in muddy waters
Fuckin' hypocrite

Liar, lawyer; mirror show me, what's the difference?
Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent

Now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo
Got lemon juice up in your eye, eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle
You must've been...

So who are you to wave your finger?
Who are you to wave your failure fingers at me?
You must have been out your mind

Weepin' shades of indigo
Trapped without a reason
Weepin' shades of indigo

Liar, lawyer; mirror for ya', what's the difference?
Kangaroo be stoned. He's guilty as the government

Now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo
Got lemon juice up in your eye, eye
Now when you pissed all over my black kettle

You must've been
High
High
High
High

Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
Your balls deep in muddy waters
Ganja Please
You must have been out your mind

Review about The Pot

Silly people... | Reviewer: The Pirate | 11/20/09

I got bored of reading the comments as they're ridiculous...

Here are some FACTS:
-This song is not about cannabis.
-"Pot calling the kettle black" is an old saying meaning, "hypocrite".

That's what the song is about for the most part; hypocrisy (mostly within the court system and government).

Tool have explained this themselves in quite a few interviews (which is beside the point as it's pretty damn obvious from the lyrics anyway).

Only an opinion | Reviewer: The Kettle | 11/16/09

The definition of a kangaroo court is a court that denies the due process of law to the defendant. This court also predetermines the verdict before the actual trial. On that note I think this is about the corrupt justice system pissing on our lives(kettle) because of their "high" positions. They judge when they themselves need judgement. Through the burning of evidence, blind(lemon juice in eye) greed(the cozened indigo) we see our current judicial system.

You're right David of the double entendre. This has at least 2 meanings more than likely it has more because Tool loves to fuck with you and make you decide the meaning for your self and there are MANY of them like so many other Tool songs....Stop arguing you're as bad...Worse than children, just listen to the music and enjoy your self. So what if nobody else agrees it's your opinion not ours, keep it.

Either way... | Reviewer: Scott | 10/17/09

You know no one needs to get to up in arms about interperations of these songs IE right or wrong as only the artist who wrote it truly knows However...... we can be certain no one is dissecting New Kids on the Block lyrics or Jessica Simpson, know what I mean? This is a good thing as this music means something and very little music made does, irregardless of the time in which it was produced, many try but if your "trying" it's probably not truly an origonal tought or one that could have multiple meanings, I'm sure it's not by accident most of Maynards songs are this way.

By the way references to Kangaroo court, Stones as in bible, and Testicles, black kettle may be reference to many things like salem witch trials or reference to the indian marytr or the Pot calling the kettle black; the very definition of a hypocrite. either way the opinions are a good read

This song is to make you tihnk about pot, as a drug, but its true meaning is about hypocricy. The band wants you to think about the drug. They use hidden meanings and lots of proverbs, and you're too stupid to find them out. Example= Stoned stands for high on drugs AND killed by thorwing stones, an old court punishment. You jsut dont understand how fucking smart this music is Keagan

Tool uses double-entendres a lot in their songs.
You can even interpret this song as not being about drugs at all, when they say pot it could be the kettle or the drug. When he says you must have been high, it could be weed high; but also a 'high' political position (if you think about it, that makes sense with the lyrics)

Many facated | Reviewer: Jenny | 9/22/09

Well, Im not going to pretend that I know everything about Tool but I did Wiki them a while back and according to it, Tool doesnt want to give us a straight answer on what their songs mean. They want us to take what we will from them. Kinda think for ourselves. I didnt read all the "reviews" but Im not sure what the arguement is here... I think the song is about the government/law enforcement saying drugs etc. are bad when they turn around and use them or have used them, themselves. So really, I think its about both things. As far as the "Pot" debate goes, for sure I think that Tool meant it to mean both. The drug and the saying. Who ever said it had to be one and not the other?

rotflmfao | Reviewer: Zion | 8/7/09

I like how ppl are like "It's change-a-roo not kangaroo, Maynard's interpretation is this, you're an idiot for thinking it's about weed" and then they turn out to be completely wrong about the true lyrics and also misunderstanding Tool.

I think I'd rather sit around laughing at everyone than try to make my dick feel bigger by getting in these "feuds".

one thing i noticed about tool is they'll take two words that are fine by themselves, but when put together in the context of the song, sound dirty. like in the song pushit. they say "push it on me" but the emphasis makes it sound like "put shit on me". again in this song "head up ass so what you talkin bout" sounds like "head up ass-hole". any one notice this?

uh... | Reviewer: Hiro | 7/11/09

i know this may have a meaning but instead of guessing lets just say it has no meaning like Aerials from System of a down.... until tool tells us what it means its best thought we have no place in telling eachother what its about
