Review The Song (14)Print the Lyrics
Clever got me this far
Then tricky got me in
Eye on what I'm after
I don't need another friend
Smile and drop the cliche
'til you think I'm listenin'
Take just what I came for
Then I'm out the door again

Peripheral on the package
Don't care to settle in
Time to feed the monster
I don't need another friend
Comfort is a mystery
Crawling out of my own skin
Just give me what I came for
Then I'm out the door again

Lie to get what I came for
Lie to get just what I need
Lie to get what I crave
Lie and smile to get what's mine

Eye on what I'm after
I don't need another friend
Nod and watch your lips move
If you need me to pretend
Because clever got me this far
Then tricky got me in
I'll take just what I came for
Then I'm out the door again

Lie to get what I came for
Lie to get what I need now
Lie to get what I'm craving
Lie and smile to get what's mine

Give this to me
Mine, mine, mine
Take what's mine
Mine, mine, mine
Take what's mine
Mine, mine, mine

Lie to get what I came for
Lie to get what I need now
Lie to get what I crave
Lie to smile and get what's mine

Give this to me
Take what's mine
Mine, mine, mine
Take what's mine
Give this to me

Take what's mine, take what's mine, mine...
Take what's mine, take what's mine, take what's mine,
This is mine, mine, mine

Review about The Package

powerful | Reviewer: julie | 10/27/09

Heard this song today for the first time ever on an alternative radio station here in australia and was transfixed absolutely by the music, the compelling build of the song, the emotion and raw power of the vocals. Came on here to find the lyrics and am bemused that there seems to be a need by some reviewers to interpret the literal meaning of the song. It actually makes no difference what the addiction is to--as what else but addiction has the power to subsume you in such a total obliterating way that nothing else matters. To me, the overwhelming thing here is how well and completely this song captures and conveys the emotion and need of addiction in its purest form--and what a song it is! It reminds me again that there is nothing else like music.

Beautiful | Reviewer: Meh | 7/20/09

This song hits such a painful note for me. It is my absolute favorite song of A perfect Circle's and Maynard has the voice of an angel. I relate to this song in that it feels like these words are coming from an old flame of mine who used and abused me for his own personal gain. Every time I hear this song it brings tears to my eyes. The meaning is however you percieve it thats the beauty of music. An inspirational song. Thank you Maynard and the rest of APC

Addiction | Reviewer: Justice | 7/5/09

This song isn't about any specific addiction. Its about any and all addictions. Notice the 12 tracks on the album, all referencing to the 12 steps of ANY recovery program. Even the album itself has the title 13th Step, a kind of joke amongst 12 Step users.

This song speaks of the Addict's mindset. Any addict will lie to get his fix WHATEVER THE FIX MAY BE. He is completely POWERLESS over the addiction, thus setting up for track two, Weak and Powerless, which happens to be the first step in many 12 step programs: Admitting that you're powerless over your habit.

The Package is anything. Its alcohol, its sex, its drugs, its gambling. Take your pick.

...I'm hip to the bull and hip to the lies... | Reviewer: me | 4/27/09

I think raizer911 says it best... everyone gets so obsessed about Maynard's lyrics in their tunnel vision of trying to learn more about him and his past and what fuels his abstract visions. I, for one, am a huge fan of the products Maynard has helped create, however, trying to understand "exactly" what his songs are about and what message they're trying to convey is, for the most part, a futile effort. Yes, there are certainly several songs that are pretty straightforward in regards to his motivation behind the lyrics, however, songs like The Package are slightly more opaque. I would argue that these lyrics are more closely aligned with someone with a sex addiction. "clever got me this far, tricky got me in", "Smile and drop the cliche 'til you think I'm listenin'": these lines sound like a guy at the bar/club eying the crowd, looking for his prey... the package... the "clever" pick up line, dropping the cliches and smiling to woo the girl/package into going home with him... he doesn't need another friend, so he's out the door again, once he gets what he came. you see, if it was about drugs, he would have no need to "lie" to get his drugs, but he would need to "lie"/pretend to get the girl/package to go alone with his plan/intentions ...anyway, that's my take and my intention isn't to make any claims that I have the right answer, its merely to make the point that there are good arguments to support other interpretations...

Verry valid points (In my mind, am certainly no censor of validity). Maynards lyrics (throughout both APC and TOOL) are usually quite multi-faceted and are usually in reference to something quite abstract while focusing on a specific instance to create a metaphore representing a "theme".
Everybody posting seems to feel that this song has the same general theme, addiction.
I find it strange that many people seem to believe that associating that addiction with substance abuse somehow devalues the song.
Addiction is a verry broad subject and, granted, can apply to many facets of life.
However, neither Tool nor APC print their lyrics inside album covers for the express purpose (or stated purpose) that their music (as with anybody else's music) is open to interpretation. The conclusions that you draw about a songs meaning are your own and generally spur from experinces that been influential in your own life. Making music another conduit for self expression rather than conformity of thought. This in my mind confirms that anybody's opinion of any one sone is wholly correct and should be respected as such. Substance abuse and addiction is something that many people have experienced in their live and if this song helps them express something of their opinion I feel that that expression should be acknowledged as valid.
For me the song is about emotional addiction. I hear this song and have past instances when I could describe my own and others behaviour in no better words than those used in Maynards lyrics. But I cannot say that this is what the song is about, only that this is what I am about when hear it.
Rant over....

TBH | Reviewer: Ole | 1/30/09

I cant see how you think this honestly is about drugs.
Like the guy before me said, Keenan is a genious, and there are other addictions than drugs!

If you have ever cared to try and understand Keenan's lyrics, you would know that he is a guy for methaphors and symbolism..
If you still dont understand, he compare the addiction of sex or love, or what ever you interpret it to be, to drug addiction..

Maynard is masterful; however, I have been reading many comments about his lyrics in several songs on this website. All of you attribute him to being a masterful lyricist, yet most of you staple his songs to mean one thing, drug addiction. There is more to Maynard than drug addiction. Yes he did have drug problems, but this seems to be a relationship gone wrong. Jealousy has taken him(or whoever he sings about) in this song, and he will lie and smile and act like everything is back to normal to satisfy one addiction that people underestimate, which is sex. Once he lies and gets what is his(sex); he leaves only to do it again. The "package" can refer to many things, but mostly it is purely the object of addiction. I don't understand why he would need to lie to receive drugs. It isn't as though the drug dealer cares what he does with them. There are more addictions than just drugs, think beyond.

What i think | Reviewer: Rob | 11/12/08

What it sounds like is a person going to buy drugs from someone, and how the dealer is trying to be friendly with him, but all he really wants is the drugs not someone to talk to. And the end sounds like what would be going through his head while the dealer is trying to talk to him, all he thinks about is his 'fix"

Shown with lines like " peripheral on the package" as the dealer talks to him all he can focus on is the bag of w/e hes buying.

Thirteenth step seems to have a pretty clear cut meaning and its about drug addiction. Every song is talking about some part of addiction.

Ok this song is definitely about drugs. First, it's called "The Package", then he talks about how he lied to get what he needs, what he wants and what he craves. Then he starts to get angry. Thats a drug addiction. Great effin song though.

Amazing song | Reviewer: Valcane | 10/10/08

This is easily one of my favorite songs sung by one of my favorite artists Maynard and I look forward to what he is going to do musically in the future.
What does it matter that Maynard has had problems in the past and wants to sing about it it doesn't mean everyone is going to interpret it the same way.
