David Gray The One I Love Lyrics

Last updated: 09/21/2012 11:28:14 AM

Gonna close my eyes
Girl and watch you go
Running through this life darling
Like a field of snow
As the tracer glides
In its graceful arc
Send a little prayer out to ya
'cross the falling dark

Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love

Perfect summers night
Not a wind that breathes
Just the bullets whispering gentle
'mongst the new green leaves
There's things I might have said
Only wish I could
Now I'm leaking life faster
Then I'm leaking blood

Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love

Don't see Elysium
Don't see no fiery hell
Just the lights up bright baby
In the bay hotel
Next wave coming in
Like an ocean roar
Won't you take my hand darling
On that old dancefloor

We can twist and shout
Do the turtle dove
And you're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love

I do do miss you | Reviewer: BOFFONNC | 9/19/12

Reminds me of a man I loved who couldn't love back. The war references I don't take so literally--I take them to be symbols of this in love, and the loss of it--even if it was worth saving...I love this part" There's things I might have said
Only wish I could
Now I'm leaking life faster
Then I'm leaking blood "
-Things that should have been said--but they weren't. And the part at the start about the night's prayer...don't we all still pray for the one that got away, still has our heart, the ones we miss, wish we could have done it differently.
Perhaps this is just due to the time in my love life but this has always reminded me of the man I am in love with...but can't be with.

The Meaning | Reviewer: a soldier | 6/2/12

Songs truly mean what ever you want them to mean to you. Whatever emotions they bring for you.

For this song however, it is a song about a soldier dying in battle. He talks about "the tracer glides", "it's graceful arc" and "the bullets whisper gentle". These are directly speaking of battle. "Leaking life faster than I'm leaking blood", "Don't see no Elysium, no fiery Hell" are about dying. "The Bay Hotel " and taking his hand on the old dance floor are memories he has as he is taking his final breathes.

No matter what this song means to you it is an incredibly powerful song. One that makes me want to be a better man to the wonderful wife that I have and miss my friends that did not return from their tours.

Repo Man | Reviewer: gunner | 7/17/11

Repo Man would refer to GOD 'cos GOD is the one who gives life & "repos" life.

I am sure this song was written for me.

"There's things I might have said, only wish I could..."

If you want to say something to someone, DO IT!!! I wish I did!

Its not repo man | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/11/11

The lyrics are printed here are not quite right.

The corus is not about the repo man. I believe it is the reaper man as in the grim reaper who is coming to claim his soul.

I definitely take from this song about a young soldier fallen and dying on the battlefield and i too get very emotional especially when i think about all the brave lads who are currently overseas and defending our life and liberty and paying this kind of price.

Graet song and great lyrics from one of the best song writers of our time.

Sad but true | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/6/10

Married for 6 years, have a beautiful daughter and a great wife, but the song sums up the feelings that I live with every day.
I married the wrong girl and now I have to live with this decision and all the while know the girl I love is on the other side of the world

Bittersweet | Reviewer: carmen | 4/10/10

Such a well-written song, lyrics and music. The fact that the subject is so immensely sad, yet the melody is up-beat and hopeful really makes this song. David Gray is enormously gifted. Being happily married and having a young son, I can't help but well up when I listen to this song - I'd be lost without either!

The repo man | Reviewer: Simon | 3/12/10

Repo Man:(US) A man employed by a finance company or similar lender to repossess property which is the security for a loan or subject of a lease and where payments have not been made by the borrower/lessor at agreed times (ie. is in default).

This line brings home the reality of his girl dealing with life's everyday problems whilst he is too far away, and to pre-occupied with war to cope.

I heard this song a few years ago and tears ran down my cheeks as I remembered my time in the Gulf and the girl at home in the UK who wrote to me every single day, at least once, sometimes twice. Beautiful perfumed letters that got me through. Guys like me are nothing without girls like that.

I found her, sent her the song and lyrics, told her the story and said thank you.

Great Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/18/09

What a great sing! The lyrics has an element of sadness to it, it actually brought a tear to my eye. Maybe we can all learn something from this song. It is so easy to love and so much more difficult to let go of those we love.

The One I Love | Reviewer: Elizabeth | 9/16/09

I believe this song is about a soldier at war missing his love back home. I do not think he is dying physically, but dying mentally from being away from his true love for so long. All the soldier wants to do is hold his love in his arms and dance the night away. This is a beautiful song. I love David Gray's lyrics. They all mean so much.
My boyfriend is in the Marines and this song is our perfect song.

song meaning? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/11/09

I remember listening to an interview in which David Gray said that he wrote that song with the image of a dying soldier lying in his own blood. This song seems all the more poignant for knowing this.

Beautiful | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/30/08

In Greek mythology Elysium was the final resting place of the virtuous and the brave. His reference to this makes me think that he is a soldier dying on the battlefield. He says he does not see Elysium but he is picturing the Bay Hotel. The thing that struck me about this song is that it is so full of joy. I had listened to it a few times before I heard the part about the bullet and the tracer. His love fills him not with grief as he is dying, but with joy. Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. It is a truly beautiful song.

I also think this song is about a soldier dying on a battlefield and feeling the life slipping out of him....thinking about the girl he loves and his regrets at what will never be.....very poingnant and sad...always makes me shed a tear thinking about all the brave soldiers who have gone this route

elysium | Reviewer: PJ | 1/22/08

To me the obvious driving power of the song is this "girl" and his feelings for her. Many of you have thought he was being "literal" when he was speaking of the battles, the tracers, and the falling dark. To me these are all premonitions in his mind regarding his own fear, doubt, and mortality. The same intuitions we all feel at certain points in time. The end where he says he doesn't see heaven or hell, just the memory of dancing the night away with his love. You can call this sad, but it is beautiful in regards to the falling darkness decending upon the world, or his life (your choice on the interpretation), and all he remembers or cares about is the one he loves.

For all those that have loved and lost | Reviewer: Fid | 12/5/07

I have put video to this wonderful song on youtube. It's for all those that have lost loved ones due to the antidepressant Paxil.

Now I'm leaking life faster
Than I'm leaking blood
