He was on his way home from Candletop
Been two weeks gone, and he'd thought he'd stop
At Web's and have him drink 'fore he went home to her
Andy Wolloe said hello, and he said hi, what's doin'?
Wo said " Sit down I got some bad news, and it's gonna hurt"
He said "I'm your best friend and you know that's right
But your young bride aint't home tonight
Since you been gone she's been seeing that Amos boy Seth"
Now he got mad and he saw red
Andy said "boy don't lose your head
Cause to tell you the truth I've been with her myself"
Chorus:
That's the night that the lights went out in Georgia
That's the night that they hung an innocent man
Well don't trust your soul to no back woods southern lawyer
Cause the judge in the town's got bloodstains on his hands
Well, Andy got scared and left the bar
Walking on home cause he didn't live far you see
Andy didn't have many friends, and he just lost him one
Brother thought his wife must've left town
So he went home and finally found the only thing
Daddy had left him and that was a gun
He went off to Andy's house
Slipping through the back woods quiet as a mouse
Came upon some tracks too small for Andy to make
He looked through the screen at the back porch door
And he saw Andy lying on the floor
In a puddle of blood
And he started to shake
The Georgia patrol wasn't making their rounds
So he fired a shot just to flag 'em down
A big bellied sheriff grabbed his gun and said
"Why'd you do it"
The judge said guilty in a make believe trial
Slapped the sheriff on the back with a smile and said
"Supper's waiting at home and I got to get to it"
Chorus:
That's the night that the lights went out in Georgia
That's the night that they hung an innocent man
Well don't trust your soul to no back woods southern lawyer
Cause the judge in the town's got blood stains on his hands
Well they hung my brother before I could say
The tracks he saw while on his way
To Andy's house and back that night were mine
And his cheatin wife had never left town
And that's one body that'll never be found
You see little sister don't miss when she aims her gun
Chorus:
That's the night that the lights went out in Georgia
That's the night that they hung an innocent man
Don't trust your soul with no back woods southern lawyer
Cause the judge in the town's got blood stains on his hands
That's the night that the lights went out in Georgia
That's the night that they hung an innocent man
Don't trust your soul with no back woods southern lawyer
Cause the judge in the town's got blood stains on his hands

Review about The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia hhmmm... | Reviewer: Katie | 8/12/2008
I love this song! Almost everybody else on this board has talked about Vicki Lawrence, and to tell the truth I've never even heard of her. when I waws little my mom told me that it wasn't a good song and that I shouldn't listen to it(in somewhat variated terms)I love my mommy!...
I Love Reba | Reviewer: i love reba! | 2/26/2008
Reba is a talented, beautiful person that deserves so much, just what she gave to us. Her songs tell awsome stories that teach us, well at least me. She is so fun and funny, and I realy love her show called"Reba" that is on LifeTime. So like I said, I LOVE REBA,she is one of my top country singers!

Well I personally think that Reba Mcentire is a much better singer of the song then Vicky lawarence. If you don't understand the words then you are just too young to get it. It is about a cheating wife and a sister who kills the cheating wife for the brother. Then the brother gets hung the sheriff knew that Andy did not kill Seth.
The sister killed the cheating wife along with Seth and before she could confess to the brother Andy they killed him.
The reason the said that the lights went out was that it was for a lying cheating community.
still dont get it | Reviewer: john | 1/5/2008
I understand everything about the song except for one thing. Why did the lights go out in geogia? they hung him not electricuted him,!
What the song is saying | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/9/2007
The girl is singing about her brother and the fact that he was tried and executed for killing his wife and the man she cheated with, Andy Wolloe. She admits in the last verse of the song that it was her that shot both of them and that they killed her brother before she could tell them. The song also implies that the judge knew damn well that her brother hadn't committed the crime.
not sure i understand what happened... | Reviewer: makayla | 11/12/2007
i've read the lyrics a few times...and love listening to this song. I'm still not sure i fully understand. Was his brother cheating with the guys wife?? and was the wife the one that shot his brother? could someone please explain. thanks!
I heard the song years and years and.......well you get the picture. I love the song, and since Vicki Lawrence sung it first, you kinda get the gist of what the song is about, but I was listening to it today on the way home and have never understood all the words; thus, never understood what happened exactly in the song. Now I printed the lyrics and understand the song. After all these years!!! haha Love Reba; she's got talent she 'ain't' even used yet, but Vicki Lawrence is better, in my humble opinion, on this particular song.
Reba McEntire is so talented, and this song is fun to listen to and sing. Reba's music just makes me want to sing it on a rooftop. But I don't think Reba would appreciate me ruining her song!!!

Great Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/17/2005
This is a great song. Not many songs now adays tell a story but this one pulls it off quite nicely. After reading the lyrics I finally caught the whole story. When listening to the song its a little hard to catch it. But it has a great story to it and the music is even better. I give this song a A++
