I wish I could live free.
I hope it's not beyond me.
Settling down it takes time.
One day we'll live together,
and life will be better.
I have it here yeah in my mind.
Baby, you know someday you'll slow grow.
And baby, my heart's been breaking.
I gave a lot to you.
I take a lot from you too.
You slave a lot for me.
Guess you could say I gave you my edge.
But I can't pretend I need to defend some part of me from you.
I know I've spent some time all lying.
I can't pretend I don't need to defend some part of me from you.
I know I've spent some time all lying.
You're looking alright tonight.
I think we should go.
You're looking alright tonight.
I think we should go.

Review about The New ehhhhhhh | Reviewer: bix | 7/28/09
This song has a general melancholic overcast to it that I find ever pleasing.
I didn't interpret this as a song about long distance love, so much as about the difficulty that occurs in any relationship concerning loving someone and wanting to be with them v. the need to keep yourself as an individual and not losing yourself to the relationship. The part about living together is merely a hopeless dream of a better future.
This "better" future signifies a "worse" present. There is a problem with the relationship now. And it seems like it's been slowly building up. "My heart's been breaking" signifies a certain length of time passing (the "has been" as opposed to "is", say). Giving a lot/taking a lot implies that enough time has passed in the relationship for a whole history to have been built up.
Both parties have suffered a lot. The narrator, in particular, feels that he has lost something that was essential to his being and that he can no longer deny it to himself or his partner.
The last part should be familiar maybe if you've ever been in a relationship that's dragged on longer than it should. It becomes ordinary to go through the motions of a happy couple without any of the happy emotion. We go out to dinner, see friends, drink and dance, but I do it because I can't seem to stop 'cos I'm attached to you (frustratingly so) but not because I really want to.
it´s awesome, and still: a grower! | Reviewer: Oliver B | 12/22/08
I heard this album for the first time when it came out, coz I saw a concert of Interpol on german TV, fell in love with their music the next second and always thought of "Turn On The Bright Lights" as one of my favourite albums eversince...
few days ago I found it again and felt the same addiction, it´s such great music and I always thought that "Stella Was A Diver..." would be my favourite, but right now it´s turning, love ´The New´, the dark lyrics, the love and despair in it... and of course the beautiful, "doomy" ending...

dmno242, I was looking for a interpretation of this song and I couldn't find any better way to describe what's happening to me right now, it's hard to know you've found the one for you and can't do shit for the moment but you know deep in your heart the time to be together will come later.... very touching =)
Interpol is amazing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/14/08
I recently was introduced to Interpol about 3 months ago and listened to their music actually in reverse order...this album is Fantastic! This son in particular is so so good..I've listened to it like 50 times today!

excellent song, really highlights the bands versatility on what i feel is their strongest album. maybe im just bias because i heard turn on the bright lights first, but antics/ourlovetoadmire have nothing on it.
Nowadays we cannot find many songs like this... It really touches my heart, and one of the things I love of interpol is their flexibility and feeling working out their songs, they can make you cry, or get angry, or get happy, but always with a little touch of darkness. Lovely song :P
underrated song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/15/07
this is an awesome song - from the deeply poignant, morose lyrics to the CRAZY flat guitar-rantings which build up toward the end (my favourite part) I love it!

it's cool when you can feel your same vibes or pain or whatever you're feeling, through the voice of someone like u...and it's great when you can lost yourself in the colour of the song...especially if it's dark...but i suppose that the end of this(amazing)song is bright...there's hope somewhere in this lyrics...maybe i'm just needing to find hope in everything around me 'cause there's not enough in my mind...whatever it's a fucking good song and it makes me feel less lonely...cheers!
dear dmno242,
I was touched by your comment. We both experience similar emotions while listening to this great song, and it's amazing...This song reminds me of my bofriend who is now very far away from me.I sincerely hope things will work out for you and your girl...:-)take care
