Words I remember... | Reviewer: Susan Sisler
------ About the song California Dreamin' performed by The Mamas & the Papas

I remember singing this song over and over and over and over... The words are "You know the preacher locked the door, he knows I'm gonna stay". WHO CHANGED THEM??? Some liberal who doesn't want us to think people can pray all night in a church? Someone trying to erase God and Prayer from our society and make it look like we were never spiritual? GOD IS ALIVE AND LOVES EACH ONE OF US!

------ About the song California Dreamin' performed by The Mamas & the Papas

The reason why the 60's were so special is because of ALL the innovation , invention & interaction (racial & foreign) ,the music style changes & the huge improvements in human relations, living standards & personal wealth & achievements.(space programme,man-on-the-moon etc) So yes , venerate the 60's & until you can get off your backside & do better then let it be an inspiration to you ! & venerate the "swinging 60's " like the rest of us !!!

Almost Right | Reviewer: Elane
------ About the song California Dreamin' performed by The Mamas & the Papas

You have the lyric as
You know the Preacher likes the cold
Preacher likes the cold

I have the lyrics on an old album it should be

You know the preacher locked the door
Preacher locked the door

If you think about it - it makes a lot more sense that he locked the door because he knew the speaker was going to stay.

------ About the song California Dreamin' performed by The Mamas & the Papas

This was never a favorite when I was a kid, probably because it was covered almost as much as "Yesterday" and I just got sick of hearing it. There was also the small fact that I had no idea what it was about.

But...when I got older I gradually cam to realize that the song is an almost perfect distillation of how many, many people saw California during the 1960s, which really was a Great Awakening for America. If you think there are too many insane Fox News republicans smelling up the joint today, imagine an entire country of them, which is what we had here pre-Kennedy/pre-Civil Rights movement.

When I was a senior in high school I was stuck in a really backward state (name begins with "I") where it was common to hear people who had never been there talk endlessly about how terrible California was. I'd spent a lot of time in the Bay Area, so I immediately understood that there was a kind of culture of ignorance about California among many of the Good People in Flyover Country. I guess that explains why I've lived in CA for 35 years now.

A Singer Should Not Assume To Know Those Lyrics Throughly | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Creeque Alley performed by The Mamas & the Papas

Wow if the printer in this activity room had not ran out, I would have had an accurate sheet of lyrics to a song I heard at it's debut ( in the 60's)I have never braved singing it publicly ans now that I see the lyrics as they were written, I and no other singer can ever assume they know song lyrics just by repeated listening to a 45 record as I did. I mean "love bumps"? and in the third line the person's name is Zal, I had always said Saul (wow). It's really an eye opener, a revelation to see egzactly what the M&P's were singing. Diction IS important these days. I am so Happea that I now see what I have been dreaming about singing. RIP Mama Cass nad John!

Song about Denny's many women | Reviewer: Meg Huffman
------ About the song Twelve-Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to... performed by The Mamas & the Papas

I am a huge M&P fan and am currently reading "California Dreamin'" by Michelle Phillips. The book tells that after the group let Michelle back in, they all bought their own houses, having once lived all together. According to Michelle, there was a constant stream of girls going to Denny's house in the canyon. John wrote this song based on that fact. The second verse makes me think that John is writing what he's imagining Michelle thinking about the barrage of girls, since she once had an affair with Denny.

A Beautiful Song | Reviewer: Cheryl Algernon
------ About the song Dream a Little Dream of Me performed by The Mamas & the Papas

I heard this song in a movie and fell in love with it. It is so touching to the heart and so soothing. It talks about a true love. And the Mamas & the Papas takes me back to my happy and sweet sixteens.

Mansions -- (From "The Papas & The Mamas - 1968) | Reviewer: Brian
------ About the song Mansions performed by The Mamas & the Papas

This is one of the standout tracks from the album (the other being "Dream a Little Dream of Me" which ultimately starts out Cass Elliot's solo career). The album is unlike any other album The Mamas & The Papas made. It deals with darker more personal lyrics. It also shows John Phillip's true writing potential. An example of the personal lyrics is in the song "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)". Its about when John and Michelle were living in New York and they faced a chapel with a clock that was stuck on 12:30. The song "Mansions" has some catchy lyrics: "Limousines and laughter, parties ever after". All in all its one of my favorite songs from "The Papas & The Mamas" album. This is also the last studio album The Mamas & The Papas make until their reunion album in 1971 called "People Like Us" which in my opinion wasn't the strongest album (due to the fact that Cass isn't vocally present on the album, outside of the track "Pearl" in which she duets with love intrest Denny Doherty. But its still one of my favorite albums).

Just got a sycamore tree! | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Dream a Little Dream of Me performed by The Mamas & the Papas

Sycamores may not be hardy above the 45th parallel; we'll find out. When I bought this potted eight foot tree a few days ago for my son I thought of what I knew about it: otherwise known as plane tree, mentioned in the 1968 Mama Cass song I heard while in Monterey, Ca.(sweet voice and song!), mentioned in the Bible?, related taxonomically to maples?
