It's riddled with biblical references and I completely agree with some of the previous analysis' on this song...I am going through one of the hardest things I've ever had to deal with in my life -- a break-up with someone who I still am very much in love with...and I did the breaking up...and I wouldn't necessarily only relate this to the stress of becoming a parent and marriage and wanting to succeed in both, but more the stresses of life itself...there are so many people worse off than I am, but sometimes that doesn't matter...sometimes you work so hard at becoming something or someone and come up short...and the easy way out seems to be the only way, yet it's not...and then you realize this, continuously, only to forget again and again and again...a vicious cycle hurting not only you, but others you care deeply for. There's obviously some kind of internal struggle going on here with this character; some sort of growth or lack thereof. The lyrics hint at many different aspects of what one could consider an actual "theme", but hints are really all they are. It's not nearly discriptive or upfront enough to be completely deciphered. It's more than likely a song about freedom of expression and personal triumph. That's what it appears to be anyway; otherwise, if you still need another answer, go ask Brandon yourselves. And I agree with another comment somebody made - that not everything is always about the war. Though, I do not think it's as simple as "You're on the boat, or you're not." That phrase is stupid, and I'd prefer to never use it in regards to ANYTHING in my life, especially in contemporary world issues.
