Caught this at the end of Ghost Town, great movie btw. And what a gem of a song it has tagged to the end of it. I almost died when I heard it was John Mayer. He's not been my favorite tabloid personality, but his music has made me a fan.
something for everyone | Reviewer: Alex | 7/22/09
Heather,
If you ever read this, understand that as much as we sympathize, and may try to understand, there is a point where we have to move on. As a person who's lost a mother, a brother, and multiple grandparents before the age of twenty, i must say, at some point we all have to move on, and searching for sympathy is much less productive and helpful to the soul than reaching out with a song and treating others fairly. at some point we are all equal. I think this song is great, with a simple kind of theme, and a hopeful feeling and tone, it rally makes you fell happy and yet it has the bittersweetness that everyone can relate to. one other nice thing about john mayer is he doesn't have some giant celebrity producing studio standing over him like rihanna or the jonas brothers, the music is very much his, and he is very sincere in his delivery

as a long time JM fan, i've rediscovered the power of this song during a currently tough time in my life. chris - your review is a couple years old now - but i agree totally; this song and 'stop this train' went on repeat in the car today. actually, so did 'say'. also in agreeance with the musicianship comments you made - i hated on john when 'your body is a wonderland' came out, got convinced to go to a show, discovered he's a killer blues guitar player who can do clapton covers justice and has stevie ray vaughn as a hero, and have been a committed fan ever since. despite his recent forays into tabloid exposes, his simple yet meaningful tunes still touch me.

heather,
you are making a competition out of everyones pain, everyone has their burdens, and fare share of pain and heart break - yours is no greater than a strangers. Being young doesnt make someone any less susceptible to pain, and having experienced alot of pain in your life doesnt make this song any more exclusive to you. I'm sorry to be harsh, but stop feeling sorry for yourself, and thinking that you have somehow had it harder than everyone else. You said yourself this song is about how "life is good", despite it all... Your not acting that way, your loosing the meaning of this song in your own argument about your somehow profound understanding of the lyrics! I'ts about moving on, your not doing that!

Heather,
It's OK for you to be upset about your mother and your grandmother but don't take it out on people who are upset because someone broke up with them. You don't know the circumstances you don't understand.
Let people be open to what they want it to mean.
Losing your mother and grandmother is hard and I am deeply sorry for that but don't think that your pain is greater than another person's pain. You don't know their heart. You should take your pain and help them with theirs. This song is about people lifting each other up in times of need. So let's be uplifting. :)

You have no idea about music, and this song. It's supposed to help any situation you are in. Or can help, it doesn't have to be about death, it can just be about losing someone, or something, moving on, anything. In the end, it's trying to tell you life is amazing regardless.
It is just good. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/19/08
I have been a fan of John for the "Waiting on the World to change" song and today I listened this The Heart of Life song and I just can't describe how it is related to my things and issues.
Pain throws your heart to the...
No, it won't all go the way...
Love turns the whole thing around...
I love this song and he describe both side of life. But the heart of life is good.
On par with "Only Heart" | Reviewer: EveryonesHero | 10/13/07
With songs like "Wheel" and "Only Heart", John has always made everlasting songs that seep into your membrane and stay there till your brother beats you with your own shoe for playing it so many times...and this one is no exception. The lyrics convey a meaningful message, while the ryhthm causes said seeping into head (and beating). Keep 'em coming, John.
RE: Heather Bea's response | Reviewer: Dan | 8/23/07
I think Heather needs to take a step into reality herself! The beauty of this song is that it can mean many different things to many different people in many types of situations. It's incredibly close-minded to put down someone's opinion when it revolves around something as subjective as the message in a song. It sounds like Heather has gone through some rough times, but it is rather selfish to think her interpretation of the song is any better or more accurate than someone else's. John Mayer would be disappointed with a response like Heather's, because he's all about open interpretation of his songs, and how each song can mean something different to everyone it reaches.
Circle of friends are your silver lining | Reviewer: Heather Bea | 8/10/07
You kids all think it's so EMO and about boys and girls... You all are going to have such a rude awakening - if it ever happens... when you step foot into the real world, ouch, it's gonna hurt! So sad you think this song is about an 17 year bf/gf that broke up with you -BFD!!! - try loosing your mom - your grandmother at 22 years of age within the same year - having your ex-husband walk out 3 months after your mother dies - Wake up - That is The Heart of Life! Love, life is good - remember he's just a boy - or girl... Not your Mom or Grammy - read a damn book for goodness sakes!
