The Grudge Lyrics - Tool

Review The Song (16)

Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.

Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end.
Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Terrified of being wrong. Ultimatum prison cell.

Saturn ascends, choose one or ten. Hang on or be humbled again.

Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip them to their lonesome end.
Saturn ascends, comes round again.
Saturn ascends, the one, the ten. Ignorant to the damage done.

Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what you will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.

Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.

Wear the grudge like a crown. Desperate to control.
Unable to forgive. And sinking deeper.

Defining, confining, sinking deeper. Controlling, defining, and we're sinking deeper.

Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Let's you choose what you will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent.

Saturn comes back around. Lifts you up like a child or
Drags you down like a stone to
Consume you till you choose to let this go.
Choose to let this go.

Give away the stone. Let the oceans take and transmutate this cold and fated
anchor.
Give away the stone. Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges
into gold.

Let go.

Saturn is the goddess of love. He is talking about his first wifes affair and how he cant let go of it. He holds the grudge and wears it like a crown, making him feel like he can be in control of who he lets in to that point again, and he wont let anyone go beyond a certain point. Saturn being the goddess of love coming around are opportunities in which he can continue to hold on to his grude or let it go and grow.

Guise this is pretty obvious... | Reviewer: TheMorningStar | 10/13/12

This song is about the freemasons and their extra-dimensional reptilian counterparts. The song faaip de oaid precedes this song so you know they are talking about it.
They operate in the r-complex of the brain so they are fearful of being wrong and are desperate to control everything about us. He says clutch it like a cornerstone because the masons are the glue holding their whole control system together, otherwise it will all come down. They have a crown chakra which is filled with negative energy. He brings saturn into the picture because there is a wider cult that surrounds all of these secret societies that worships the planet Saturn. That's enough truth for now kiddies, go back to playing in the sandbox of ignorance if you want, or you can use the TOOL they are trying to give you to wake the fuck up.

Great song | Reviewer: JCD | 9/7/12

I personally think it's about a psychedelic experience and the realization that grudges will only weigh your conscience down. Especially this verse has convinced me so:

"Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Let's you choose what you will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent."

Saturn in this case, is the drug, or the hallucinogenic experience. Sound familiar to anyone?

Meaning | Reviewer: madcow | 4/16/12

It is simply about someone holding a grudge and they need to choose to let it kill them or they can let it go and be free of the bondage, and be happy and free like a child to have all this burden lifted off them.

opinions are like B holes we all have them but truly funny to see sum1 analyze maynards anlyzations which have many truths....of course the ultimate truth can not be explained in words so in closing i would like to say i find it a good thing that he speaks of christ and also has the double doji from buddhism on the cover of the lateralus album=)

In my opinion | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/12/11

I think you guys are over analyzing when you go about mythology and astronomy. I think it is simply Maynard making his "Saturn Return" from a hard life. Maynard mentions in an interview (I can't remember where I saw it) that Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison never made their Saturn Return and that Maynard was afraid that he wouldn't make his as well. If you read some of the lyrics you can kind of get what he's saying, for example: "Saturn comes back around. Lifts you up like a child or
Drags you down like a stone to
Consume you till you choose to let this go.
Choose to let this go". In my opinion this is Maynard telling himself to let go of his past and to move on.

I believe... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/19/11

I'd have to go with the guys who compared this song to the greek mythology of kronos (or chronos or whichever mispelling you prefer), many features of this song are simply uncanny when compared to the mythology. I do however see the comparison to the phenomenon of Saturns return, although, in that sense you do have to make many leaps with the songs lyrics... Oh if only Maynard would enlighten us :)

Saturn Return? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/6/11

I've seen that "Saturn Return" has been mentioned a few times by various commenters. I'd also like to point out planetary retrograde phenomenon, where a certain span of the zodiacal elliptic is traversed before it is then retraced by the planet in question (saturn) a 2nd and 3rd time due to it's perceived backwards motion from us viewing it here on earth. This is what could be referenced in the song's lyrics, in a round-a-bout way.

amazing song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/17/11

In astrology, Saturn is associated with restriction and limitation. And thats what your ego does, and your ego picks you up and throws you down...until you let go of restrictions and limitations which puts you on the other side of where you are; then you see the ying and the yang.

Grudges are blessings in disguise. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/29/10

My favorite part of the song is where he speaks of turning Grudges into Gold. This is important to note: if you do the right thing, the Grudge becomes a wonderful blessing in your life. Not something bad.
This is how we grow.

music is therapy | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/1/10

This song has unbelievable relevance to my life. I struggle with hate and forgiveness and its funny where u can find therapy. I never really clued into the lyrics of this song and others on the album until I destroyed my marriage.

WOW | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/28/10

this song is a really wonderful song! in my opinion i feel it means that any thought you have can also be wrong, so to stick to the thought of every thought being right will pick you up, but sticking to a thought just within itself will pull you down and consume you, so if people just lived by accepting everything and letting everything be the way it feels it shuld be then the impossible things would become possible

Thanks | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/3/10

I stand corrected. Gosh, I even mixed Greek and Roman mythology. I am glad I came back here to see the post "Great Song..." by that kind Anonymous reviewer :)

Although these 2 lines reminded me of Cronus, especially since Rhea handed him a stone in place of Zeus :

"Saturn comes back around. Lifts you up like a child or
Drags you down like a stone to
Consume you till you choose to let this go."

But I will have to agree that it suits the astrological phenomenon of "Saturn's return" much better.

Great Song... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/24/10

I have to disagree with the Anonymous reviewer who wrote the review entitled "Really Top Notch", in that Saturn (while prominent in mythology, typically better/also known as Cronus/Kronos/Chronos) is not a reference to the Titan that ate his children (would-be gods), but a reference to "Saturn's Return," an astrological phenomenon. "Andrew", in his review called "Scarlet," hit much closer when he said Saturn represents your chances to let the grudge go. If you want to know about Saturn's Return, check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn_return.

Scarlet | Reviewer: Andrew | 1/12/10

Scarlet Letterman is referring to the Novel "The Scarlet Letter", more specifically it is talking about a character in the story who is adulterous.

Unable to forgive your adulterous deeds" is what the line is saying.

The whole song is basically saying that if you hold on to grudges and bitterness, it will eat you up. Saturn represents all of your chances to let the grudge go, and everytime you choose not to, you get burned and dragged around until you finally decide to let it go.
