The Good Times Are Killing Me Lyrics - Modest Mouse

Review The Song (28)

The good times are killing me. Here we go!

Got dirt, got air, got water and I know you can carry on.
Shrug off shortsighted false excitement and oh what can I say?
Have one, have twenty more "one mores" and oh it does not relent.

The good times are killing me.

Kick butt buzz-cut dickheads who didn't like what I said.
The good times are killing me. Jaws clenched tight we talked all night, oh but what the hell did we say?
The good times are killing me. The good times are killing me. The good times are killing me.

Fed up with all that LSD.
Need more sleep than coke or methamphetamines.
Late nights with warm, warm whiskey.
I guess the good times, they were all just killing me.

Got dirt, got air, got water and I know you can carry on.
The good times are killing me.
Enough hair of the dog to make myself an entire rug.
The good times are killing me.

Have one, have twenty more "one mores" and oh it does not relent.
The good times are killing me.
Shit-kicker city slickers who all wanted me dead.
The good times are killing me.
Get sucked in and stuck in late nights with more folks that I don't know. The good times are killing me.
The good times are killing me.
The good times are killing me.
The good times are killing me.
The good times are killing me.
The good times are killing me.
The good times are killing me.
The good times are killing me.
The good times are killing me.

I used to think, or at least know, The Good Times Are Killing Me was about drug, alcohol abuse, but I'm starting to think if it's just remembering those old times that you can't have again that is really killing you inside. At least that's how I feel now.

modest mouse is like listening to a philosophical conversation (dialectic) of free thinking individuals...
perception is promoted in the lyrics; it's not telling you how to think, but opening your mind to infinite possibilities in all aspects of life.

Modest Mouse has an extemely unique style, even for the indie alternative group in my opinion. this song alot of teenagers and adults can relate to because everyone has a few good times, and even if you dont want to admit it or stop, they are killing you. i mean i know that but hey! im not stoping. (:

One is too many.... | Reviewer: Recovering Asshole | 11/23/10

And a thousand never enough. What I love about this song is something that sooo many people already know --- either you realize that the party is over and it's time to put that all behind you, or you die.

All of those good times are great, but they really are killing you. I love that this group gets it, and shows that there is a chance for freedom....

So good | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/11/10

All ready said, but this song truly captures a moment, a scene that I personally lived through many times. Jaw clinched talking all night and my good the weird people i would end up with.. Good Stuff

It's awesome to read everybody's comments on this song. Really inspiring to see so many people all on the same page as each other.

There are so many of us who came from the same place and relate to this song in the same way - proof that MM got it bang on (like they almost always do).

I miss those Good Times | Reviewer: anonymous | 6/19/10

This song hits it on the nail, all of those sleepless nights. "need more sleep than coke or meth-amphetamines" We all knew we should have slept but just kept on doing more blow or amphetamine. I'm glad those days are done, but they are definitely hard to get away from. There isn't a Friday night that goes by were I just want to do a rail. I hope everyone who commented on this is doing good and staying strong. Now if I could just stop drinking so much.

i have yet to come across another band, in my many years of listening to and writing about music, that captures the raw emotions and small representative nuances of continuing our modern visceral existence like isaac brock and the boys. His incredibly tough upbringing as an impoverished homeschool student and the child rearing shortcomings of his promiscous mother led to the development of one of the most beautiful minds (brock) in music today.

ps. check out Andrew Bird, he's the shit

Great song | Reviewer: Gaz | 3/4/10

Brilliant song, it's just so relatable . I always try to get out of that scene , then have a "one more " then have about twenty more. It's just so hard. Seems like whenever I have a one more nowadays I just get depressed and think to myself "why did I do that?" yet somehow it leads to months and months more of the same thing . Isaac Brock is my favorite lyricist in the world, just brilliant..

I listen to this song whenever I feel the need to get back into the "scene" of partying and doing drugs... I have been clean for 3 months but it really is hard. And for every body that commented this I hope you all are doing alright.

drugs are bad, mmmmkay... | Reviewer: mizzichael | 3/2/10

if you're reading this you probably already know. growing up, growing old, just trying to keep growing. trying resist one more day like all the rest. trying to make them last.

modest mouse hits it right on. i never would have thought reviews on a lyrics site would be like group therapy, but it certainly seems like everyone who came here has something in common beyond listening to this song.

best wishes to all.

I wonder if it's something subconscious.

I thought I was free and clear and clean for a few months now, but I woke up this morning with a monster of a hangover. Already being up, I hopped on the computer and throw on some music, and I started listening to this, and ended up on this page.

Looking back at previous reviews, and how long ago they were posted, I hope you're all doing well. I hope if someone looks back at my review in a few months, I'll be doing better as well.

Amazing song that is related to by amazing people.

Thanks. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/17/09

This song almost brings me to tears. Amidst all of the glorification of drugs in rock n' roll, modest mouse writes the truth, not for everyone, but for some. Some people end up chained by drugs instead of freed. This is my life. And I am still working on ending all of my "one mores." Grateful for this tune.

one thing i love the most about modest mouse is the fact that they are the one band that can explain your feelings better than you even understand them. Its nice to know that someone else feels and experiences the same damn thing, and that you are not alone. i honesty dont think i couldve survived what part of life that i have without the support of this band getting me through the days.

im sitting alone in my empty apartment with wet eyes of stress worry rejection confusion and the unknowing life embodies, but after reading these reviews by real modest mouse listeners who understand and feel their lyrics as much as i do, i dont feel so alone anymore.

thank you modest mouse, and the real people out there for not letting me drown
