Review The Song (11)Print the Lyrics
Now, if I may digress momentarily from the main stream of this evenings symposium, I'd like to sing a song which is completely pointless but is something which I picked up during my career as a scientist. This may prove useful to some of you some day perhaps, in a somewhat bizarre set of circumstances. It's simply the names of the chemical elements set to a possibly recognizable tune.

There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium,
And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium,
And nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium,
And iron, americium, ruthenium, uranium,
Europium, zirconium, lutetium, vanadium,
And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium,
And gold and protactinium and indium and gallium,
<gasp>
And iodine and thorium and thulium and thallium.

There's yttrium, ytterbium, actinium, rubidium,
And boron, gadolinium, niobium, iridium,
And strontium and silicon and silver and samarium,
And bismuth, bromine, lithium, beryllium, and barium.

Isn't that interesting?
I knew you would.
I hope you're all taking notes, because there's going to be a short quiz next period.

There's holmium and helium and hafnium and erbium,
And phosphorus and francium and fluorine and terbium,
And manganese and mercury, molybdenum, magnesium,
Dysprosium and scandium and cerium and cesium.
And lead, praseodymium, and platinum, plutonium,
Palladium, promethium, potassium, polonium,
And tantalum, technetium, titanium, tellurium,
<gasp>
And cadmium and calcium and chromium and curium.

There's sulfur, californium, and fermium, berkelium,
And also mendelevium, einsteinium, nobelium,
And argon, krypton, neon, radon, xenon, zinc, and rhodium,
And chlorine, carbon, cobalt, copper, tungsten, tin, and sodium.

These are the only ones of which the news has come to Harvard,
And there may be many others, but they haven't been discovered.
Now, may I have the next slide please?
Got carried away there.

I memorized this in an hour | Reviewer: SKG | 6/30/09

I was bored, I watched the animation a dozen times... and... Oops! I've memorized it! Seriously, I get requests from everyone I know to sing this thing. In my chemistry class, my professor told us all to take a piece of paper and list all the elements we can think of before beginning our lesson. I wrote the song. He stared at my paper for about ten minutes. -Go Tom Lehrer! (10/10 song - now I'll go memorize Yakko's World)

Far out! | Reviewer: Julia LaFontaine | 5/13/09

This is GREAT. Heard it last night on an episode of "NCIS" and had to search for it. I always liked looking at the Periodic Table in Science class and saying the names of the elements, but this is much more fun. (I also have a "Periodic Table of the Fruits and Nuts" poster hanging in my garage, 'cause I'm kinda crazy.)

The animation is terrific, too; someone had fun creating THAT. Thanks, Tom Lehrer, in whatever plane you might exist now, for a wacky, smile-making song. Now I gotta go look for your other titles.

Itunes | Reviewer: Brandi | 12/1/08

Hi, well at my school we have the choice of either taking the test at the end of the chapter or memorizing this song, does any one possibly know how to get this song on Itunes? it would me much appreciated if somebody could help me...thankyou!

Same Old Song | Reviewer: citizenKen | 11/17/07

This song was done in the mid sixties by a math teacher from MIT. I think he went to UC Berkeley at some point. His name is TOm Lehrer. His other songs are hysterical- "Vatican Rag", "Pollution Calypso", "In Old Mexico". They're worth tracking down. Enjoy.

I think that this song is great!! I heard it in science and i'm trying to learn it and I won't give in!! does anyone know whether you can get it on itunes???
This would definately gain a ten out of ten for me!

make more songs like this so i can carry on learning them!

Love it. | Reviewer: CS | 8/15/07

It's one of those songs that you can't help but try to sing along. Someone at privatehand.com made an interesting flash video for it. I want to get an iTunes version so I can freak people out all the time. 9 out of 10 easily.

"...a possibly recognizable tune" | Reviewer: Eric M. Berg | 6/5/07

As I recall, the tune in question is "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General" from The Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan.

The Elements - Tom Lehrer | Reviewer: Mathew N | 5/16/07

I heard this song a few weeks ago in my science lesson video. Since i heard it I endeavoured to find out what it was called, who it was sung by and what exactly the lyrics were. I now know this song without the lyrics. Wow, i have too much spare time!! Teacher said we were going to watch it again soon so hopefully i will be able to sing it to the class!! XD

Overall i would say its a very good song. 9/10 for me!

How many times I tried to sing along, about ten, all I can say about this great song is that you really need a fast moving mouth to repeat it at speed.
