Nothing’s ever changed, you still turn away
You’ve washed your hands, you’ve made that all too clear
You just keep on living this lie
You refuse to see, you’re denying me
the cross I bear but you don’t seem to care
Even Judas knew he had lied
I keep wondering why
I’m still calling your name through my tears
Why have you waited to embrace me my dear?
Cold is your silence, denying what is real
I’m still wondering why
I’m still calling your name my dear
I’m sorry if you can’t stand the naked truth
All you see is how you want it to be
So you keep on living your life
Release me from this cross after all these years
Oh call my name and help me with this weight
Even though it comes far too late
I keep wondering why
I’m still calling your name through my tears
Why have you waited to embrace me my dear
Cold is your silence, denying what is real
I’m still wondering why I’m still calling your name
and I wonder, oh I wonder
In my heart I still hope you will open the door
You can purify it all, answer my call
Why? Why?
Why have you waited to embrace me my dear?
Cold is your silence, denying what is real
I’m still wondering why I’m still calling your name
and I wonder, oh I wonder
In my heart I still hope you will open the door
You can purify it all, answer my call

Review about The Cross Really, is it important? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/29/09
Okay, does it matter whether or not the song is christain? WT makes GOOD MUSIC in general, and the meaning is based strictly on opinion. I don't see why on earth people have to LABEL music. And no, I am not pagan. I had a traditional, CHRISTAIN upbringing; I just don't see why we have to be such religious zealots when it comes to the music we listen to. The song has a powerful meaing when you think about it, but that doesn't make it a religious one. Would anyone say that this song would be christain if it were preformed by, say, GODSMACK??
To You Your Questions, No! | Reviewer: Jayme | 7/28/09
The songs is not religious. It only refers to Judas as being a liar and a traitor against Jesus to the Romans, and the "cross to bear" is also a saying about heavy burdens. Therefore, she's saying that she was lied to and betrayed, and it is still a heavy burden for her to bear. She asks for him to help her with it but he doesn't seem to care. It seems to me that she has high hopes for this person to help her out, but it seems that it won't come too soon.
So, no, the song is not religious. She is refering to love and her own personal experiances. I think that it's clever to use Judas as an example. Just because he is mentioned does not mean that the song is religious.
But Lea also has a good point. It can go either way. I've said my piece and gave my own opinion.

Amen to that, Alice. I completely agree.
Religious or not, it is their own personal thing. They don't promote religion through songs, they don't quote commandments or laws. That should put an end to it.
As for the song meaning - it always, ALWAYS, depends on the individual. The interpretation, that is. No one can claim for certain they understand every line the way the lyricist did when they wrote it. Unless a band member, a songwriter or a lyricist explains the exact meaning - we can never know for sure. For some, it's denied love. For some, it's denied God. For some it's neither. It's an individual thing to find out what this song means to us.
Why does it matter so much to you people? | Reviewer: Alice | 6/25/09
Why does everyone have to label everything? A person's religion is personal, and yes, they have done some christian songs, and some paganistic songs. But who says that you have to be something to talk about it? As much as you know, they might not believe in any of these religions, but just sings about it because it's hot topics and/or they want to understand it better. There are many reasons, in my own poetry I have sometimes refered to "God" and other religious symbols. But I am not christian, but because of other personal reasons.
So stop be so focused on what they believe in, because that doesn't matter, the thing that matters is what they do! And WT makes GREAT music, religious or not!
What the HECK!!! | Reviewer: DaughterOfDarkness | 6/1/09
Okay, I'm not much for the whole christian thing either, but this song IS christian and this song IS true! It is titled THE CROSS and it's talking about how the sinners down on Earth are denying God's truth because they would rather it not BE true. We tend to think we have a choice: believe in christianity and go to Heaven or Hell OR choose not to believe it at all and be free from either eternity. The song is, from God's point of view, asking why we continue to believe our own lies instead of calling on Him if in the end we CANNOT change our fate. Don't try to change the meaning of this song! It's christian and it's truth! And don't try to label Within Temptation because of a few songs they've written. Keep in mind they also came up with "The Howling" and "What Have You Done".
Does it really matter in the End? | Reviewer: Grainne | 12/31/08
For the sake of bringing up a couple points...I think they come off as biblical or Pagan in certain songs, but I don't think they have an official faith view as a whole (which is great). However, just because they mention "Gods" and respecting the earth doesn't make them necessarily pagan (just like mentioning Judas doesn't necessarily make them Jewish or Christian). You have those same themes mentioned in almost every faith, whether its in retrospect or law (Example, No other GODS before me and Being Good Stewards of the Earth are some found in the Bible). Speaking as a former Wiccan and Black Sheep Baptist, I don't care what they are as far as the music industry goes. They play wonderful music and are a fantastic musical force. Isn't that enough?
not really | Reviewer: Darcy | 11/7/08
I believe you refer to "Memories", Enki. OK, let's set this straight: In case you haven't heard "Truth Beneath The Rose", no they're not. They just present many different ideas in different songs. And I'm not a pagan (though I've been falsely called a Wiccan because of certain things...). I listen to and understand "Mother Earth" and "Neverending Story". They're songs about respect for the earth and what a part she plays in time. If you ask me, I don't think W. T. HAS a religion, really.
And if that sounds paganistic I really don't give a damn. Respect of the earth is not limited to one specific religion.
This song is NOT Biblical. It uses Biblical references, of course, because this song is about betrayal of the heart and a lost love. Judas and Pilot are very common references to use in literature when referring to betrayal.
And they are paganistic if anyone has ever heard the songs "Mother Earth," "Never-Ending Story" and the one song with the line, "I pray to the Gods let him stay."
In my heart I know you can answer | Reviewer: Raven | 6/16/08
Obviously this song has Biblical ties (Pontius Pilate with the hand-washing, Judas's name is mentioned, et cetera et cetera and so forth)and I'm not going to ramble on and on about them because they're the surface meaning. That's pretty much the first thing you think when you hear the song, in other words. But doesn't make it any less a good song, and it doesn't make it any less a WT song. This acutally fits many book characters, though. Specifically, ghosts like Hamlet's father come to mind. (Why Hamlet's father, I don't know.)
Oh and by the way: AHA! See, I TOLD you Within Temptation was not paganistic!
Thank you and good-night/morning.
