The Carpenter Lyrics

Review The Song (10)Print the Lyrics
Who are you? Man condemned to shine a salvation
Throughout the centuries

Why? Was the wine of the grail
Too sour for man to drink

The carpenter
Carved his anchor
On the dying souls of mankind
On the tomb of this unknown soldier
Lay the tools of the one who for us had died
Tools of the carpenter

The one they lick
The same old sick
Dream of their precious saviour

Kiss them deep
And make them weep
Over promises of eternal peace

The carpenter...

I hear you
Through the symphonic voices of nature
The purity I could never doubt
They tell me to lie on the grass
And observe my saviour
The one crucified to the chirping of birds

The carpenter...

Review about The Carpenter

Very Meaningful Song | Reviewer: Jade | 8/19/09

I love Nightwish and I especially love this song by them.
i believe that it is about Jesus, and I totally agree with what Antony explained.
Like many have mentioned, Jesus worked as a carpenter in his early years, so that was the first thing i thought of...
second, Jesus was completely sinless and pure:
"I hear you
Through the symphonic voices of nature
The purity I could never doubt"
and as His Father is God in Heaven, we are shown through nature of His goodness and His creativity.
(Romans 1:19 - 20: "They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God."
and like Antony mentioned, in "The one they lick
The same old sick
Dream of their precious saviour", he is talking about the hypocrites of today who distort His message of life. i also think that its about the Pharisees and the other religious leaders of His time on earth, who expected the Messiah as a political leader, not as the Lamb of God who would die to wipe away the sins of humanity. ( therefore, they opposed him.) this explains,
"The carpenter
Carved his anchor
On the dying souls of mankind
On the tomb of this unknown soldier
Lay the tools of the one who for us had died".
because since mankind has sinned and our sins separate us from God and result in death, the Son of God took our place and died for us. He saved our souls and all we have to do is accept Him as the Son of God and make Him the Lord of our lives to experience true eternal peace that only He can give. He can give our lives meaning and make us all that we were ever meant to be.
"And observe my saviour
The one crucified to the chirping of birds

The carpenter..."

great song. <3

RE: Raven | Reviewer: isnt important | 2/8/09

it wasnt in bible, but in greek mythologi, and they had to escape becouse they build the labyrinth for king midas to keep minotaur, and midas didnt want them to reveal secrets of labyrinth to anyone, so they had to escape.
And theire ˇˇwingsˇˇ wasnt like in this clip. There was also some flying monks who built a milde-age rogallo, but it didnt work properly, becouse they did not have anything to control it, and then they said humans cant fly, becouse they havent tail.

God bleeps america, why all americans i meet are so stupid like you.

Song Meaning: | Reviewer: The Raven | 11/19/08

Actually there is a story in a bible, I vaguley remember bout how this son and father were helped captive and he used the feathers from their pillow and hot wax from the candle to make wings so he can escaper from their prison sail. He told his son not to fly to close to the water cause it will melt the candle wax and he would drowned but he went close to the water anyways. Thats my opinion on what its about.

just few words | Reviewer: Ivica | 3/4/08

It was very interesting to read all your comments, keep on. I love Nightwish and this song has many possible meanings but being an atheist I have no need to comment them. I say believe what ever you want but not blindly. Ask your self why, all great people did, even JC.

Beautiful song | Reviewer: Eric | 12/23/07

This is a wonderful song by Nightwish...

however I am compelled to correct the correction of theology made by Josh.

quote:
"Though, on that subject of the sun, Lucifer was originally a Roman god of light, but when Lucifer originally appeared in Christianity, it was just another name for Christ(many early-born Christians were named Lucifer because of this), so Lucifer would have meant Christ, and the word "lucifer" literally translated as "light-bearer", so in accordance with ancient scripture, Lucifer= "light-bearer" = Christ, hence the possible reference to the sun("light")"

This is incorrect. Lucifer is in no way another name for Christ, but in fact another name for Satan. Please read Isaiah 14:12-15.

Lucifer or "Son of the Morning" once held a position of power in the heavens. However he aspired to rise above God, and that got him in a sense kicked out of heaven. He then became the tormentor of the earth. He was doomed to Hell.

Let us not make the mistake that Lucifer and Christ are the same. They are not.

Christlightsun | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/8/07

Thanks for the info Josh. Whilst the connection between Christ and Light is undeniable, he is sometimes, described as the "spiritual sun", (as opposed to the physical sun). The physical sun is, nevertheless, symbolic of Christ. Remember, how the Sun was described as being eclipsed during Christ's crucufixion? (Luke 23:44-45). Anyway, I'm sure we both agree, like all (most?)Nightwish fans, that the 'Carpenter' is a ripping tune, regardless of what anyone of us think it actually means.

A good interpretation... | Reviewer: Josh | 11/25/07

It is plainly about Jesus, but to correct your theology...

"Christ, like other Sun-Gods before him, is known as the "Son of Light", the "Sun of Righteousness", "Sun of Justice", the "Unconquered Sun - Sol Invictus" etc... "

Christ is not a sun god, but the Son of God, God being the Christian God of everything, not just the sun. Also, the "Unconquered Sun - Sol Invictus" is not Jesus, nor is it Christian, but rather an old Pagan belief celebrated with a week-long feast called Saturnalia.

Christians, in their quest to purge what they viewed as heathens, convinced these Pagans to convert by noting various superficial similarities such as "You have an Unconquered Sun...we have an Unconquered Son(Jesus)"...so Saturnalia was reduced to a single day, and altered to become Christmas.

Though, on that subject of the sun, Lucifer was originally a Roman god of light, but when Lucifer originally appeared in Christianity, it was just another name for Christ(many early-born Christians were named Lucifer because of this), so Lucifer would have meant Christ, and the word "lucifer" literally translated as "light-bearer", so in accordance with ancient scripture, Lucifer= "light-bearer" = Christ, hence the possible reference to the sun("light")

The Carpenter is Jesus | Reviewer: Antony Aristovoulou | 11/9/07

The Carpenter is definitely a song about Jesus, and although it's hard to decipher the lyrics without any doubt, it does seem to criticise the church establishment and dumb faith of people which has sullied the philosophy of Christ. Here's my reading:

The first line introduces JC as a man whose popularity is both his blessing and curse.

The second line seems to reason that this is still so today because "believers" in JC have failed to find illumination, i.e. the wine from the grail is not sweet enough for them. Like a bitter pill, the "sour wine" is too difficult for most "christians" to digest, and therefore continue to live not in accordance with what JC preached - peace, love, respect, etc...

The Anchor is an ancient Christian symbol of salvation and hope. Thus, "carving the anchor on the dying souls of mankind" is possibly another way of saying "preaching salvation to people seeking enlightenment", or "promising spiritual salvation in the afterlife to dying believers".
The "unknown soldier" is a soldier of christ - that is, a preacher, priest, or martyr, etc... These soldiers, are, in a sense, "the tools of the carpenter"

The next verse, seems to descibe certain priests and believers in JC as dogs, since they lick and eat their own and others vomit. That is, they are hypocrites and not true believers because their actions do not reflect JC's teaching. They seem to think, that, because they are Christian, and are supposedly guaranteed entry into heaven, that they can continue living in sin.

The next verse may focus on priests or evangelists, who manipulate the minds of their laity. They abuse JC's promise of eternal peace, by putting them through unecessary guilt trips - an ego boast and power trip for the megalomaniacal priests. With great responsibility over people, priests should preach with compassion and humility, not psychological (and in some cases, physical i.e. flagellation, torture, molestation) manipulation.

The final verse is beautiful, and extremely powerful. It reconciles the spirit of Christ with the spirit of the Earth and the Universe. The "symphonic voices of nature" sing to the Christian to lie on the grass and observe the "saviour" crucified to the sound of chirping birds. When a person lies down, what do they see? The Sun!! Christ, like other Sun-Gods before him, is known as the "Son of Light", the "Sun of Righteousness", "Sun of Justice", the "Unconquered Sun - Sol Invictus" etc...

The whole moral of the song is, from my perspective, that JC has been corrupted - his simple philosophy of love between all Humanity and oneness with the Universe, has been taken over by a manipulative machine-like institution which has lost focus, and in turn, has cause many believers to lose focus as well.

If you're wondering, I'm a non-church going Christian. My words and every day actions should determine whether I'm a good person in the eyes of my God - not how many times i go to church, or pray, or give money to a priest, who in fact, is, just a man, and no better than me.
Cheers,T

question about this song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/23/07

is this song about Jesus Christ? well, i know he was a carpenter, and the song lyrics strongly suggest me that the song is about him. i'm an atheist, but the content of this song picked my curiousity.

for the Nightwish fan | Reviewer: Jonas | 8/14/07

In Nightwish's diversity this song was made. As far as this song being a good song, i would say yes without thinking twice. but it took some time for this song to grow on me, so give it a chance!
