The Captain Lyrics - Kasey Chambers
Review The Song (10)
Well I don't have as many friends because
I'm not as pretty as I was
I've kicked myself at times because I've lied
So I will have to learn to stand my ground
I'll tell 'em I won't be around
I'll move on over to your town and hide
And you be the Captain
And I'll be no-one
And you can carry me away if you want to
And you can lay low
Just like your father and if
I tread upon your feet you just say so
'Cos you're The Captain, I am no-one,
I tend to feel as though I owe one to you
Well I have handed all my efforts in
I searched here for my second wind
sponsored linksIs there somewhere here to let me in I asked
So I slammed the doors they slammed at me
I found the place I'm meant to be
I figured out my destiny at last
Did I forget to thank you for the ride
I hadn't tried I tend to runaway and hide

to all those victims of psychopaths | Reviewer: N1M | 12/22/13
this is a beautiful song in its own rights, but to anyone who is recovering from a psychopathic relationship you will understand fully the lyrics as they will resonate with your very soul. Yes you still have one, it is there, battered and bruised and a little shy. You are no longer the victim but no your own Captain. Steer yourself carefully through the rocks and you will sail on to the wonderful life that awaits you. Love and kindness to all x

Its a sad and beautiful song all at once. I really like it.
Agreed this was the perfect song for the close of that episode of The Sopranos, superb foreshadowing and imo this is the at or near the apex of the entire series in terms of storytelling and production.

It's not an angry song. It's about a friend of hers. And to answer the very typical "how many women...?"; how many men go through the same?
Modern women seem to think they have a monopoly on pain and problems. Suppose we can thank feminism for that. Convincing women their problems are worse and more common than that of children and men. Quite conceited and arrogant.

I think the first comment is correct, there is definately controlled anger in the words. I first heard this song at the close of a Sopranos episode where Tony has just started an affair with a women he met at his therapist's office. Its seems all very nice but she is really angry. The song was a brilliant foreshadow.

When Kasey says "I feel just like I owe one to you"; there's some anger in those words, to me. I identify with this song having been married to a narcissist--I did figure out that the only possible way to have harmony in our relationship is if I was 'no one' and he got to be the someone. My role was to not "tread on his feet". I don't think this is a romantic song and I don't think Kasey intended it so. She speaks of the pain that many women suffer in marriage; how many women get behind their men and support the mans cause and lose their own identities. Kasey's music in general has some sarcasm and sadness and this song is at the top. I love this song because it draws out an issue that is far too real. The question is whether people who should 'get it'; are doing so.

this is one of the worst songs i have ever heard and it makes my stomach upset and i need to use the toilet whenever i hear it which is every afternoon on the music system where i work. it makes no sense and that would not be so bad but it is sung so badly and it just whines on and on and on. ugh!
One of my favorites! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/25/07
This song has a lot of meaning to me. I'm sure it's the same for a lot of other girls. It's a shame more people do not know about Kasey Chambers.
