The Cage Lyrics

Performed by Sonata Arctica
Review The Song (27)

A lifetime ago, with frozen eyes they closed the doors.
Suddenly I realized what locks are for, no trusting them anymore. "lights are out".

Empty stare, innocent and unaware, dragged out from my home, my lair.
Earmarked me, hurt me, burned me.

The walls around me, eyes surround me, feed my fear again.
I must be freed or I will die before the harvest moon, my friend.
I do not have another year in me, you've gotta set me free.

The dream is alive, I can run up the hills every night,
go around and see another side of the tree.
Freedom has a meaning for me, howl with me.

Fear in the dark "I advise you". Can't see the eyes "they glow behind you"...
It's my song that now I sing to you.
You stand no chance....

They'll kill for me, steal back my freedom, set me free, it's my minions versus thee.
Fiery the vengeance, hate will drain me.

The walls around me, eyes surround me, feed my fear again.
I must be freed or I will die before the harvest moon, my friend.
I do not have another year in me, you've gotta set me free.

The dream is alive, I can run up the hills every night,
go around and see another side of the tree.
All I want is to be untamed and free, howl and (dream).

The dream is alive, with the moon on the hills every night,
run around and see another side of the dream.
Freedom has a meaning for me, you can't tame me...

You will remember the day you crossed my path.
leaving me without guard now you'll feel my wrath.
What you have done to me has made me bitter and cruel.
I'll see that all the hate you spread returns to you... you...to you!

The dream is alive, I can run up the hills every night,
go around and see another side of the tree.
All I want is to be untamed and free, howl and (dream).

The dream is alive, with the moon on the hills every night,
go around and see another side of the dream.
Freedom has a meaning for me...

Wolve | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/3/12

I think the song is very clear, to me at least, I see it as imprisoned wolves, I don't know why, maybe because wolves is what first came to my mind. But then again it could be about anything that's imprisoned; human beings could be one of them. But the one thing that screams "wolf" in this song is where it says "Howl with me" ...
Anyways, its my favorite Sonata Arctica song.

Yes Thar Were Wolves | Reviewer: Morsarn | 6/22/11

This song has got to be one of my all-time favorites. Not many songs can make me dance in my seat.

Anyway, I'm convinced that it's a story about a werewolf, maybe with some hidden, deeper meanings for which the werewolf is an analogy, but the story here is definitely pretty clear cut.
I mean, it switches several times between a pleading desperation and a fiery hate theme--much like a man who has been caged, suffering, and the angry, furious wolf inside.
Just to justify the werewolf theme:
"...Fear in the dark "I advise you". Can't see the eyes "they glow behind you"...
It's my song that now I sing to you..."
"...The dream is alive, with the moon on the hills every night,
run around and see another side of the dream.
Freedom has a meaning for me, you can't tame me..."

Though considering the line with "ear-marked me" it could just be about wolves, but the narration leads me to believe otherwise.

warning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/27/11

This song is dangerous if you are bicycling. Once I managed to exceed my calculated maximum heart rate listening to this. Besides being an amazing song, it seems to give mystical powers when listening and doing physical excercise at the same time.

The song that started it all... | Reviewer: Guynio | 12/5/10

The Cage was my introduction to Sonata Arctica, and boy was it a good entrance. The song blew me away, and it's my favorite song to date. It just has so much power behind it, it's a song full of struggle, but it ends good, and full of hope, and never fails to cheer me up when I'm down.

At the end, everything comes together, and everything becomes even louder, even higher, even greater, just... epic-er. It's an amazing song and the end just blows me away each time I hear it.

The theme? My life. | Reviewer: cagedwolf | 3/26/10

This song may be written about wolves or African slaves or whatever, but to me personally the song is about my married life. Every word speaks to me directly and affects me, like many of SA's songs. All I want is to be untamed and free, indeed.

Fullmoon sequel? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/22/10

I was thinking if this could be tied up with fullmoon, as the caracter becomes a werewolf and all, he got trapped and need to be freed, before the next harvest moon.
Perhaps he will turn human again, and the one "singing" is the wolf inside him...

Excellent | Reviewer: Crit | 2/16/10

This song is definitely about trapped wolves... I mean, the "howl with me" part closes it. Either about zoos, animal testing... I dunno, it's animalistic. Great song, Sonata Arctica is my favourite band ever. ^^

Wolves | Reviewer: Obrum | 2/1/10

To who thought it was an African theme, I suppose that's an acceptable meaning, but I'm fairly sure it's talking about the entrapment of wolves. 'The dream is alive, I can run up the hills every night, go around and see another side of the tree...' doesn't seem to be something a human would do, much more plausible that it is from the perspective of a trapped wolf... Very moving song in my opinion.

Meaning... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/7/10

Does anyone else catch the theme of an African American slave here? 'I must be freed or I will die before the harvest moon', it seems he works in the fields.
He also seems to have a good idea of navigating naturelike features, further implying his connection to africa. does anybody else feel this way? if not, what is the theme?

Live choir + orchestra version | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/22/09

Have to say my favorite version is Tony kakko singing it with a full orchestra and 320 person choir. It is ridiculously epic. Unfortunately the rest of the band wasn't worked in as well. But... *shrugs* if we were to have Tony, the band and full orchestration we might all die the instant we hear it of perfect happiness.

Just brilliant "unlimmed stars in rating!" | Reviewer: Morten Bakke | 1/26/09

if the rate goes from 1-10, this song gets 11.

Its so wonderfull and inspiring. When I listen to this song I realy feel the dream is alive. The vocals rocks, the guitar rocks, the back choir rocks. All rocks!

No doubt Sonata Arctica always spare this song to the last in live.

This song is too god to be described in words. Tears must be the closest alternative.

Wonderful | Reviewer: Onyx | 12/29/08

I love this song, pure brilliance.
Just listening to it made me want to get up and get outside, the words just had a shot at me that hit me directly in the heart.
It makes me feel as though I can and I should do the things I want to do, grab hold of the oppertunitys, do what I long to do!
Has this outstanding song made this impact on anyone else?

Love this song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/20/08

Most of this song's good but the Chorus is completely- well, it swept the feet out from under me and sent me sprawling, it was so awesome!
Love the "caged wolf" analogy; Sonata Arctica's wolf fixation is beautiful.

@ St Louis Wiccan : maybe that's because every sonata arctica album contains a what they call wolfsong: Ecliptica = FullMoon Silence= Wolf & raven winterheart's guild = the cage reckoning night: ain't your fairytale Unia: It Won't Fade.

but, indeed, this song must be one of sonata's best songs, to be honest i like the live version better. the vocalmelody is f*cking amazing. And how Tony manages it everytime to reach the high notes, he must be one of the best singer in the rock/metal scene

Awesome... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/12/08

Greatest song, along with Wolf and Raven! Seriously, this song sends chills up my spine. The melody is hardcore, and tony, well he is a god. Just listening to this song can give me thousands of ideas to write! Keep up the words of thunder!
