The Byrds Lyrics

As Roger McGuinn once said of the Byrds, "It was Dylan
meets the Beatles." The Byrds combined the upbeat, melodic
pop of the Beatles with the message-oriented lyrics of Bob
Dylan into a wholly original amalgam that would be branded
folk-rock. If only for their harmony-rich versions of
Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and Pete Seeger's "Turn! Turn!
Turn!," drenched in the 12-string jangle of McGuinn's
Rickenbacker guitar, the Byrds would have earned their
place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Yet the group
continually broke ground More...

the wise and the older man realizes how little he can believe in the establishment's and the antiestablishment's doctrines. In his younger years he chose one to believe in. It made him feel mature and purposeful. Now he must unravel the lies which led to his misconceptions. So, in effect, he's much younger than that now.

Thanks to The Byrds and Bob Dylan for superior music and lyrics during the confusion.

And thanks to Sirius for the revival of some great memories.

When Dylan was asked he said it was a protest song, protesting protest songs. Did he say that after the fact? I don't know. What I do know is that he made a lot of money from everyone covering his songs.

What happenned was that we had been living a lie about who was supporting our high level of ecomonice prosperity; that was the reason many people for the war in Viet Nam pushed to keep it going. Dylan's great masterpieces like my back pages; took people down a more real path to accepting that our's was not the only way. Living off of cheap material gained and protected by our soldiers, we needed these kinds of songs to prepare us for an awakening. Now, we see, that our standard of living does revolve around our neighbors and not some lie about who is God's favorite people

I guess you hopeless Romantics need enlightenment. Here goes. Roger seems to be in touch with his feminine side. Now if a girl wrote about this kind of horse lusting nobody would say boo. All that aside just google his coauthor. He's some kind of a Shrink talking about eating, bathing, a rope she's pulling on, jumping on her, snales, taking a leap and falling into the abyss, the sun & the moon, staring down surroundedby black and crawing to the red, splashing it dry, and finally loosing your rope.
I never met a Shrink that didn't need a Shrink. Shrink's come in two types, Freaudian & Skinnerian. If he/she is a Freaudian they can't help themselves from thinking like this and it's more than probable they never did acid. If he/she is a Skinnerian they can have some fun with this and call the local radio station and dedicate it to their rival Freaudians with the added comment choke on "this"!(not a Freaudian slip) I think that maybe I'm dreaming.......

I just went to Dali Museum. At first it looks like a jumble, but the more you look, the more you see. Very planned. Makes you think. You can try to figure out what the artist meant, or you can put your own meaning to it. This song is like that.

Jorma Kaukonen, I think did this originally. I know he has a couple of great versions of it in the Hot Tuna discography and I heard him and the Airplane play it from time to time back when the world was young

Sexual allegory | Reviewer: Anony-moose
------ About the song Chestnut Mare performed by The Byrds

I always heard these lyrics as a not-so-subtle allegory for an attempted sexual conquest -- the narrator pursuing a beautiful woman, who is symbolized by the horse. Funny that no one else ever seems to mention this interpretation, which seems really obvious to me.

great great song. These lyrics seem like stream of conciousness. maybe he has an overall message. But sounds like cool words to sing.
As for Dylan? Just another Jew in show biz writing protest songs. And the only thing they were really protesting is how jews dont like feeling like a "minority". The truth is there WAS NOTHING TO PROTEST. America was a paradise. Especially for the jew. Jews, historically, never had it as good as they did in the US. But, as usual, they have to screw it up for themselves. The 60s was a phenomenal catasrophe. they only thing that happened was the dismantling of civilization that only white Christians seem to be able to do. the Hollywood Jews with their pornography. The Jews in government that threw open the immigration doors and let all the hordes in. The Jews, mostly responsible for facilitating the American slave trade, constantly telling blacks have their own "culture" instead of doing whats right.

I'm very sorry that some college gave a paper on this an A++ - the music to this song is sublime but the lyrics are woeful. Example: 'she'll be just like a wife' - referring to a horse! I've always loved this song but I suspect the other Byrds were laughing their heads off and just said "sure - that'll be fine". Essentially, if you reject any potential esoteric symbolism, which is really not apparent - a guy falls in love with a horse - end of story.
