The Boy Who Wanted To Be A Real Puppet Lyrics - Sonata Arctica
Review The Song (18)
So many years ago, many more than I'd
Even care to bear in my mind
From the darkest of all places I found you
All the limbs in their right places
and a heart made of real gold
Sell me your little doll, oh sir, I ask you kind.
Every night I'd return to watch them
The master and the puppet in the show.
He said: "Oh no, I cannot sell him...
Priceless he is, masterpiece of mine."
Please, sell me your puppet, sir.
Name your price oh please,
Whatever you may ask,
tenfold the price I pay
"Did I not make it clear?
This debate is over.
I will never part from this puppet, my son..."
With hungry eyes I followed them all night
The blind master and the puppet he had made
"No, sir, to sell is not my will!"
the doll is mine, even if I have to kill...
So it shall be, if this is what it takes
"Greed's truly blinder than me..."
"Heart of gold is what you wish for?"
"So, this little boy...wants to be.. a puppet, for real..?"
So, I have a golden heart
Now only needing the voice of the master
Never feel hunger, never grow older
My dream was to be a star in a real puppet... show!
It's so hard to remember my life,
the times before the show
"can I ever cut off the strings?"
"Take a bow, now dance and sing... Sing!"
Would you turn me to child again?
"No, never, I am your Guide."
You can see a small grin on the face
Of the master, when the puppet's in his place
Be careful of what you wish for
Wishes might come alive
The twines are pulling me every day and night...
The show, the glitter and all the fame
I'd give away for a life
Some things can end with a word, they say
This only ends with a sharp knife. Knife!
Even care to bear in my mind
From the darkest of all places I found you
All the limbs in their right places
and a heart made of real gold
Sell me your little doll, oh sir, I ask you kind.

Some things can end with a word, they say... | Reviewer: Dante | 1/27/11
But the only outcome involves a knife. Whether the boy kills the master, cuts the golden heart out, or cuts his strings, all he really desires is freedom. In this case, freedom takes the form of flying to Death's waiting embrace.
My not so unique take | Reviewer: Air | 10/15/10
I agree with Allegory except I take it as one mistake can be horrible enough to be irreversible.
Except for that small part I was too lazy to retype that reply with different words so you all can just imagine them here instead.
allegory | Reviewer: manda | 9/30/10
I don't take this song literally. I think the puppet is just a representation for greed. First the narrator is focused on possessing the puppet (greedy) and it becomes so extreme that he is consumed with it (becoming the puppet).
I think the puppet master is a representation of time and consequences; once you have made too many bad decisions there is no way to reverse them. "This little boy wants to be a puppet...for real?" And other similar lines from the puppet master are ways of stating that there was plenty of time to stop and think about the impending mistake. There were opportunities to be discouraged and turn away, but the person in this allegory ignores it and persists as he is becoming more wrapped in greed.
As for the end, I think the line about a knife is a way of saying that some mistakes are simply carried with you until death. If you've trapped yourself in a terrible situation through your own sin and blunders, you won't get out unless you die.
Anyway that is my take on it.
Strange, funny and deepmeaning song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/12/09
yes, this can make you smile, if you read the songtitle, and it seems to be a fairytale, reading the lyrics, but this song has a very important message to tell...
beware of what you wish for, wishes might come alive....
do we know what we truly want? beware and think, before acting and doing things too hastily
mm reminds me of .. | Reviewer: Aentike | 9/2/09
this is really a strange but cool of SA songs now taht im reading it reminds me in my own way to the movie dead silence hope u ve seen it in some way i like to compare it with that the master questions that the boy wants to be a puppet for real so maybe he doe skill the boy to make him a real puppet but well just an idea no more no less still great song!!!
My Opinion | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/10/08
IMO, it's a simple story, yes.
A rich boy who saw the master with his puppet in the show, he got instantly fascinated. He tried to buy the puppet, so he could do the same as the master. For the boy, the puppet was perfect. The master said that the puppet is his masterpiece, and he would not sell it for anything in the world.
The boy continued trying, and trying. He was so hungry for the puppet that he said, if it would need to kill the master, he would.
But here comes the part where the master surrender to his greed. You can see "The BLIND master and the puppet in the show", and then he sais "Greed is truly BLINDER than me", so he surrender to greed and says that he would give the boy the puppet, if it use the heart of gold (something that apparently turns him in a puppet), and the boy accepts because he would accept ANYTHING to have the puppet.
Now he is a puppet, only waiting for the master's voice. Whatever the master says, he need to obey.
Then, he repent from being a puppet. Now he would give everything (that he before gave for the puppet), to have a life again.
He discovered a way to free himself, other than words (that doesn't work on this case), it's to cut the strings, making him free but killing him also.
I love this song. | Reviewer: Aido | 7/31/08
this is my second try to submit the comment XD
I think as Mortis, thank you all for make me understand the lyric, cause I had no idea XD
but I'm not sure of the end of the song...
the boy (who is already a puppet) kills the master or kills himself????
mmmmm... i don't know.
someone knows if SA has said something about it???
ABout the lyrics | Reviewer: Mortis | 7/26/08
I think the lyrics are about the boy who first wanted to by the puppet from master, but master declined it for few times, then boy said, he doesn't want to buy it, becouse the puppet is already his and he would kill for it,then master asked the boy if he really wants this heart of gold..(i think Tony meant heart as a puppet),and looks like master misunderstood what the boy wanted,so instead of giving him a puppet he turned, the boy into the puppet, then boy was happy for awhile, but, he missed his real life and he asked the master if he could turn him back to child again, but master denied it .-not sure about the last part- but i think the boy killed his master in the end.
Not Sonata Arctica's best. | Reviewer: Sam | 2/20/08
I must admit, this is one kickarse song, and in terms of plotline Anon below {Ideas, 2/13/2008) Pretty much has the thing wrapped up in my opinion. I really like SA's song style, they do a lot of tragedies, yet it isn't at all 'emo' dare I use that word. Take 'Full moon' and 'White Pearl, Black Oceans'. If you don't have them, it's worth getting them and reading the lyrics superbly written, both could have been adapted straight from a thriller novel. (Whether they were or not is a different story entirely) Overall 8/10 song.

I think that the boy first wanted to buy the puppet because he was attracted to it's gold hearth, he insisted in buying it but the master kept saying no. Then, blinded by greed, the kid asked the master to turn him into a puppet, so he could have a golden hearth. The puppeteer made the boy's wish true, but now he couldn't enjoy the golden hearth nor being a puppet, because he could only move if the puppeteer moved him. He realizing his error, he asked the puppeteer to make him into a human again, but the master would not, what is made, made is. He found out that the only way to free himself from the mistake greed made him fall into was cutting his own strings, but if he did this he wouldnot be able to move (dead).
