The Blues Lyrics

Performed by Switchfoot
Review The Song (6)

Is this the New Year or just another night?
Is this the new fear or just another fright?
Is this the new tear or just another desperation?

Is this the finger or just another fist?
Is this the kingdom or just a hit n' miss?
A misdirection, most in all this desperation

Is this what they call freedom?
Is this what you call pain?
Is this what they call discontented fame?

It'll be a day like this one
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in

I'm singing this one like a broken piece of glass
From broken arms an' broken noses in the back
Is this the New Year or just another desperation?

You're pushing till you're shoving
You bend until you break
Till you stand on the broken fields where our fathers lay

It'll be a day like this one
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in

There's nothing here worth saving,
Is no one here at all?
Is there any net left that could break our fall?

It'll be a day like this one
When the sky falls down and the hungry and poor and deserted are found
Are you discontented? Have you been pushing hard?
Have you been throwing down this broken house of cards?

It'll be a day like this one
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in

Is there nothing left now?
Nothing left to sing
Are there any left who hasn't kiss the enemy?
Is this the New Year or just another desperation?

Does justice never find you? Do the wicked never lose?
Is there any honest song to sing besides these blues?

And nothing is okay
Till the world caves in
Till the world caves in
Till the world caves in
Till the world caves in
Till the world caves in
Until the world caves in
Until the world caves in
Until the world caves in
Until the world caves in
Until the world caves in
Until the world caves in

Not sure, but... | Reviewer: Dan | 7/26/10

It's probably not right, but I think that it's about how everyday, someones world will end, whether it's a loved one dying, or finding faith and being reborn. Every day, someones life will change, an you just wait for your turn.

Redemption in the Blues? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/13/10

"It'll be a day like this one
When the world caves in"

Does Foreman have in mind his/my world caving in, as the song initially seems to suggest? Or is he prophetic here, feeling the same way Elijah did when he complained to God that there's no one left who hasn't kissed the idols of Baal. Is Foreman talking prophetically about both the now and the not yet in this song, so that the Parousia is in mind when he wonders if there (may actually) be nothing Ok until the world caves in, that is, the new heaven and earth come 'round:

"And nothing is okay
Till the world caves in"

Speaking of the now-and-the-not-yet, I find redemption in these Blues even now and today:

"Is this the kingdom or just a hit n' miss?"

If the notion of God-with-us (Emmanuel) is true, that means God has come near, God cares about these (our) Blues, and God can work even in these dreary, seemingly god-forsaken circumstances. And isn't that the state of things when the gospel *usually* appears on our horizon, when "the hungry and poor and deserted are *found*"? The Good Shepherd has come to find the lost sheep -- that's a message of the gospel.

Could it be that even "the Blues" is the moment when, possibly, just now, it could be the New Year, the finger of comfort, the dawn of the Kingdom of Heaven? Even in the midst of my personal world caving in, it could be...both.

incredibleee!!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/11/09

this is definitely one of the most amazing switchfoot songs out there. it has helped me through some really tough times life and especially how it talks about the world caving in because i honestly feel like my world is caving in around me sometimes and the lyrics just really pull me through the hard times and inspire me.
God bless <3

For me, this describes my slavery to lust. I've had so many times where some of my world caves in and I think that maybe now, I've learned my lesson and I'll finally see God as the only true source of sastifaction. Yet ultimately, it turns out just to be a hit 'n miss and I'm bound back in to the darkness.
But it will be a day like this one when all my little gods implode on me and God reveals all. But today that would not go well for me.
So right now they're nothin' so sing but the blues.

amazing song! | Reviewer: =] | 12/7/08

this song is absolutely beautiful. i think its meaning can be interpreted a little differently by everyone but for me it really describes how i feel sometimes but gives hope at the same time.

my favorite lines are:
It'll be a day like this one
When the sky falls down
and the hungry and poor and deserted are found
It'll be a day like this one
When the world caves in
And nothing is ok
Until the world caves in

which to me basically means that things are bad now but on a day when you feel the same way as you do now, god will make everything better. but until then, things arent good but you need to be hopeful

Help | Reviewer: jasper | 11/2/07

this song means so much to me at the moment, just like Siperchick's 'Beauty Frfom Pain'. It's helping me get through a really rough time, when i want to run but i need to stay and help.

truth wobbles and hides... its hard to know what to do sometimes. Things are rough all over
