The Beginning is the End is the Beginning Lyrics - Smashing Pumpkins

Review The Song (42)

Send a heartbeat to
The void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
For now we stand alone
The world is lost and blown
And we are flesh and blood disintegrate
With no more to hate

Is it bright where you are
And have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
My old secrets laid
We can watch the world devoured in its pain

Delivered from the blast
The last of a line of lasts
The pale princess of a palace cracked
sponsored links
And now the kingdom comes
Crashing down undone
And I am a master of a nothing place
Of recoil and grace

Is it bright where you are
And have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in its pain

Time has stopped before us
The sky cannot ignore us
No one can separate us
For we are all that is left
The echo bounces off me
The shadow lost beside me
There's no more need to pretend
Cause now I can begin again

Is it bright where you are
And have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
my old secrets laid
We can watch the world devoured in its hate
Strange
Strange
Strange
(strange)
(strange)

This song brings out so much from my soul most everyone has deep seated pain within them in a dark sense lyrically this brings sadness from within and transforms it to divine music triumphant and conquering we all need a light in our darkest hours this song was extremely motivating to me I don't want to ramble. Merely pay tribute to smashing pumpkins for expressing this so beautifully

Slight Rendition | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/7/12

I would like to make this suggestion:
"Is it bright where you are?
Have the people changed?
Does it make you happy?
You're so strange.
And in your darkest hour,
I hold Secret's flame,
We can watch the world
Devour in its pain."

mistaken | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/14/11

correction, this song was not written for Watchmen, it was used in the batman and robin movie which would be the only reference of any superheroes so its possible that it is written for Batman and Robin or Wayne and Grayson. The fact it was used in Watchmen just shows the greatest of the smashing pumpkins

Hmmm... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/3/11

I think that instead of:
And we are flesh and blood disenegrate
That it may be
And we of flesh and blood disenegrate
Since this both makes more sense and if you listen very closely you will here it this way...

Batman | Reviewer: sam | 10/31/11

Corgan wrote this song for the movie Batman and Robin, and from what I understand it is actually about the characters. I wonder if the line "pale princess of a palace cracked" isn't actually "pale princes of a palace cracked", a reference to Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson.

different ending lines | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/22/11

currently the last chorus is:

Is it bright where you are
And have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
my old secrets laid
We can watch the world devoured in its hate

but i believe it is closer to this:

Is it bright where you are
And have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
my old secrets laid
We can watch the world revel in its pain
slightly different but i think much much more strange and ominus

look at it again | Reviewer: Teresa | 9/5/11

Almost all the reviews say the song is about superheros. I mean, yeah, it was written for two great movies about superheros but when you look at it again, it can take on a new meaning. Coming from an introspective look its saying that we carry that dark place in us... a place filled with hate and pain... that we look out from and see the world differently.
the chorus
"Is it bright where you are
And have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
My old secrets laid
We can watch the world devoured in its pain"
you look from that dark place and see others differently, as if they are light and dont feel the pain you do and wondering if you are able to change as they seemed to have, become bright, and new. something strange to the feelings' owner because where they are they see everything they have done.. all the bad all old secrets.. and instead of following through and trying to change, they simply stand aside and watch the world be devoured by the same darkness the posses. it continues to say that everyone is devoured by their own feelings, no one actually shines. this the world is devoured in painfully, lonely, sad, hate.

Interesting song | Reviewer: Luis | 3/15/10

This song fits now just Watchmen by Doctor Manhattan. Just think about what he does while reading the lyrics and think about who he is and what he has done in Watchman. For example-Master of a nothing place=he being the master of mars and having his palace there

Clarification on the Watchmen usage. | Reviewer: Mark | 1/24/10

This song was actually on the Batman soundtrack, it was the last song on the album and was written as a sort of reprise to the main song, The end is the beginning is the end. The Pumpkins also did this for Tonight, Tonight. In their box set there is a Tonight, Tonight Reprise. So despite what you may think, this was not written for Watchmen. I was very excited when I heard it on the trailer, as I hadnt heard it in years.

1984. | Reviewer: heather. | 10/11/09

i have been scrolling through the lyrics of smashing pumpkins for a couple days now obsessively, and finding they all, in some way or another, relate to the book '1984' by george orwell.
perhaps it's just because i have just completed reading it that i have now become aware of significant references and that big brother is watching me always.
but, i find the links everywhere now and it terrifies me.

very ambient...i love it! | Reviewer: Devin | 8/14/09

This song is perfect for both Batman and Watchmen...its so dark-sounding and it fits the tone that both superhero stories have, even though it coincidentally works with Watchmen since it was written for Batman.
Nonetheless, its sound is mysterious, pretty, and subliminally ominous..makes me feel like Roscharch. Hahaha, not to mention the lyrics are intertwined to the point where you have to read them all in order to understand the message. Excellence!

one of my favourit songs | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/23/09

firstly, this song was made in '97. i found a demo version of it called batman 2, as well as well as a demo of the end is the beginning is the end, called batman 1. i'd say this means they were both written for batman, and only one was used. and i also think both songs are about all superheroes, the beginning is the end is the beginning first verse is about how they are not accepted (the sewars belch me out,the heavens spit me out) and the song here is about what heroes think of themselves.

Watchmen or Batman | Reviewer: Ash | 3/9/09

For batman or watchmen, the lyrics suit both, and indeed most superhero mythologies.

Send a heartbeat to
The void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
For now we stand alone
The world is lost and blown
And we are flesh and blood disintegrate
With no more to hate

Most superheroes have a dark pain from their past, ultimately leading to them taking a separate persona, to distance them from that pain. To fill a void that cries through them.
They see in their pain a lost and blown world, where they stand alone, without hate, becoming more than flesh and blood of mortal men.

Superman's homeworld destroyed, so he saves ours.
Batman saw his parents murdered, so he fights criminals.
even the Xmen, segregated and unaccepted by society, band together, fighting evil to prove the world needs them.

And that ultimately (in my opinion) is the meaning of these lyrics. An introspective & melancholy sentiment to the superhero mythology.

And its just an awesome song!

We can watch the world devoured in it's... | Reviewer: Mike | 3/6/09

Ok, so I've listened to it about 10 times now, and I'm almost positive that the last line says "we can watch the world devoured in it's hate" instead of pain. in the other chorus sections, he does say "pain", but if you listen closely, in the last chorus he says "hate". I think that subtle difference makes the song that much more powerful.
