The Archer's Bows Are Broken Lyrics - Brand New

Review The Song (6)

Who do you carry that torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Do you carry it around just to burn things down?

Meet me tonight on the turnpike, my darling
cause we believe in everything
If we sweat all these debts then we're sure to drown
so let's strap ourselves up to this engine now
With our God who we found laying under the back seat

What did you learn tonight?
You're shouting so loud, you barely enjoyed this broken thing.
You're a voice that never sings, is what I say
You are freezing over hell
You are bringing on the end, you do so well
You can only blame yourself, it's what I say

Oh, order your daughters to ignore me think that will sort me?
and sweep me under the rug

While you're beating with a book everyone that book tells you to love

There is an ember in the heart of the kiln
And it's burning hot with love
Burning out my center till there's nothing but dust
rolling me with care into your cigarette
Cause the God I believe in never worked on a campaign trail

What did you learn tonight?
You're shouting so loud, you barely enjoyed this broken thing.
You're a voice that never sings, is what I say
You are freezing over hell
You are bringing on the end, you do so well
You can only blame yourself, it's what I say

Who do you carry that torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Do you carry it around just to burn things to the ground?

What did you learn tonight?
You're shouting so loud, you barely enjoyed this broken thing.
You're a voice that never sings, is what I say
You are freezing over hell
You are bringing on the end, you do so well
You can only blame yourself, it's what I say

[Chorus continues in the background]
Feels like we could escape
and I don't mind throwing away this filthy silver song
If you try running a maze of your lies
It's too hard to save if you've thrown out everyone

Simple Interpretation. | Reviewer: Legend | 8/23/13

Who do you carry that torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Do you carry it around just to burn things down?

---
Who do you carry the light for, and do you believe in doing right with that light if you use it to destroy something instead of anything else?
---

Meet me tonight on the turnpike, my darling
cause we believe in everything
If we sweat all these debts then we're sure to drown
so let's strap ourselves up to this engine now
With our God who we found laying under the back seat

---
Asking to meet up in a strange place away from everyone, because they believe in something greater. They are not worried about what is owed, only how to move forward in repaying the debt. Their belief is not something popularized or written about, but something hidden and chanced upon.
---

What did you learn tonight?
You're shouting so loud, you barely joyous, broken thing. (fix'd)
You're a voice that never sings, is what I say
You are freezing over hell
You are bringing on the end you do so well
You can only blame yourself, it's what I say

---
A question posed for those unable to grasp the simple truth they found "in the backseat." This person claims to preach joy and love, but can only bring upon the end that they themselves are warning people about rather than take a stand against it, because they are wrapped up in a conflicted message. There is no joy in their song, only broken logic and fear.
---

Oh, order your daughters to ignore me think that will sort me?
and sweep me under the rug
While you're beating with a book everyone that book tells you to love

---
Spoken to the same person who cannot understand the truth found "in the backseat." Most likely spoken from a position of a hyper-religious parent using their faith to keep their daughter from the mind of a free thinker, whether that free thinker has a stronger grasp on the actual faith that God requires or not. It is not what they believe or how they believe, and therefore must be wrong - hence why they use examples from the Bible as a weapon rather than as a source of comfort. They beat him with the book that tells them to love their neighbor unconditionally.
---

There is an ember in the heart of the kiln
And it's burning hot with love
Burning out my center till there's nothing but dust
rolling me with care into your cigarette
Cause the God I believe in never worked on a campaign trail

---
There's a fire that this person cannot put out, for love is its source. They are determined to snuff it and burn him away like a cigarette, because the God he believes in is not the same God marketed by politicians and televangelists, two of the most hypocritical and ungodly groups of people imaginable.
---

What did you learn tonight?
You're shouting so loud, you barely enjoyed this broken thing.
You're a voice that never sings, is what I say
You are freezing over hell
You are bringing on the end, you do so well
You can only blame yourself, it's what I say

Who do you carry that torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Do you carry it around just to burn things to the ground?

---
He asks the question again, and this time, with force
---

What did you learn tonight?
You're shouting so loud, you barely enjoyed this broken thing.
You're a voice that never sings, is what I say
You are freezing over hell
You are bringing on the end, you do so well
You can only blame yourself, it's what I say

[Chorus continues in the background]
Feels like

and I don't mind
throwing away
this filthy silver song
If you try
running a maze
of your lies
It's too hard to save
if you've thrown out everyone

He is apologizing for how the truth he is delivering is uncomfortable, even painful to hear. He doesn't mind throwing this "song" away and saying "sorry" after the fact, but it is a truth that needed to be spoken, a truth spoken with wit and pointed directness - sung by a "silver" tongue.

He asks them to try running the maze of their core beliefs, and asking how they could possibly hope to save or guide anyone like their book asks them to, if they spend all of their time judging and chasing away all of those who may need them with their belief. This goes right back to the beginning of the song, where their faith is the torch and they are burning down the very thing they wish to save. At that point, who are they actually carrying that torch for? Would their God ask them to burn it all to ash? Or should they try to illuminate their surroundings to better understand how to help another, or use that light to warm and guide those lost in darkness instead of setting them on fire for not believing in the exact way that they do?
---

It seemed to be very plain, as far as meaning goes.

Lyrical Meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/10/09

He's not slandering or questioning his religion.

He's talking about people who use the Bible against people. When in reality, the Bible was made to spread love.

"While you're beating with a book. Everyone, that book tells you to love"

He's saying exactly that. Everyone, the Bible isn't for beating down everyone who doesn't believe or everyone who sins, it's for sharing love.

And the campaign trail is a reference to God's word. His campaign to bring everyone together. However, many Christians (as well as atheists and other religious people), use it to further divide us all.

AWESOME SONG | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/12/08

Brand New are one of the greatest bands of our time (and they don't get enough credit for it), their lyrics are inspired, i'm a christian and i don't find this song at all offensive as it is telling people to look at what they stand for, and to know what they stand for, as for the god bit, i think it is making reference to the fact that people put in all the effort for god but what does he do to promote him self

a thought. | Reviewer: caitlin | 1/9/08

to Jesse, I think that what he means by that line is perfectly conveyed using 'never' in there. Jesse (Lacey)'s saying that God doesn't work on a campaign trail, while his followers do. He's talking to the believers, saying, "I don't know what God you think you're promoting, cause the God I believe in never worked on a campaign trail."

Great Song | Reviewer: Jesse | 12/8/07

One of the best on The Devil & God. I love the way it accuses someone of not knowing who or what they carry the torch for.
But im positive it says "the God i believe in worked on a campaign trail" without the "never" which would work better as it would be him saying that he feels tricked into religion as they campaigned to get more followers

Great song about a few contradictions in life. He is doubting the faith that some people hold and belives they use it in a manner without good intentions. People are walking blindly through life not seeing what is actually there.
