The Apostle In Triumph Lyrics - Opeth

Review The Song (2)

In solitude I wander....
Through the vast enchanted forest

The surrounding skies are one
Torn apart by the phenomenon of lightning
Rain is pouring down my (now) shivering shoulders
In the rain my tears are forever lost

The darkened oaks are my only shelter
Red leaves are blown by the wind
An ebony raven now catches my eye
Sitting in calmness
Before spreading his black wings
Reaching for the skies

In this forest
Where wolves cry their agony unto the moon
My spirit is hidden
In the form of wisdom
carved on a black stone
The only way to follow
Open your soul
Redeem, I am immortal

Blinded by a light
My soul is held by glory
I engulf the skies
The apostle in triumph

Through the eternal flame I travel
As the rain keeps falling.?

The Apostle in Triumph is one of my favourite Opeth songs, and yet is one of the more frustrating listens. Not frustrating by being poorly written, or even by being slightly less than it could have been; but by the shere flippancy of the brilliance within. There is not a section of the Apostle in Triumph that does not demand repeat listening, and yet the song denies you the luxury of repeating it's greatest moments - instead putting forth new sections that match the greatness of their predecessors, while you still hang on to hear the previous riff. Any other band might have succumbed to the temptation to repeat these moments of brilliance, yet Opeth plow on from greatness to greatness with such apparent ease that, as a musician, it is frankly disconcerting.

That Opeth, and especially the early Opeth of the albums Morningrise and Orchid, should be considered Death Metal is generous to the genre. Opeth have always been something far more than that, and to class them amongst such bands on the basis of the vocal battery does not do justice to their melodic flair and ability to make the progressive accessable. Opeth introduced to Death (and, subsequently, Black) metal genres, but I am yet to find another band able to come even close to their beautifully gothic realisations. It is only this, that has kept the early 90's flannel shirt on my back.

Now excuse me, but I have to wipe something brown off my nose.

This is the last song off Opeth's debut album, Orchid. And it's one of my favourites. It has everything that makes me love Opeth. Catchy acoustic licks, crushing metal riffs, demon-growl vocals next to passages sung in Akerfeld's angelic tenor.

If you want to know what Opeth are about, or if you want to give someone an example Opeth song to listen to, this is the one to go with. It's complex without being taxing. Unique without being difficult and Death-Metal without being scary.
