Sit tight, I'm gonna need you to keep time
Come on just snap, snap, snap your fingers for me
Good, good now we're making some progress
Come on just tap, tap, tap your toes to the beat
And I believe this may call for a proper introduction, and well
Don't you see, I'm the narrator, and this is just the prologue?
Swear to shake it up, if you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes, trophy boys, trophy wives
Swear to shake it up, and you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes, trophy boys, trophy wives
Applause, applause, no wait wait
Dear studio audience, I've an announcement to make:
It seems the artists these days are not who you think
So we'll pick back up on that on another page
And I believe this may call for a proper introduction, and well
Don't you see, I'm the narrator and this is just the prologue
Swear to shake it up, if you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes, trophy boys, trophy wives
Swear to shake it up, and you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes, trophy boys, trophy wives
Swear to shake it up, you swear to listen
Swear to shake it up, you swear to listen
Swear to shake it up, you swear to listen
Swear to shake it up, swear to shake it up
Swear to shake it up, if you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes, trophy boys, trophy wives
Swear to shake it up, if you swear to listen
Oh, we're still so young, desperate for attention
I aim to be your eyes

Review about The Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is Press Coverage Ladies & Gentlemen | Reviewer: Cristie Conundrum | 4/2/09
Ryan Ross wrote every song in AFYCSO when his father was dying, so of course the songs are going to be a little bit darker than the ones on Pretty.Odd. are. It's been years since they released their first album, so of course they're going to be a little more mature, and they're going to write songs that people their age are dealing with. They're not teenagers anymore.
And I agree with Serenity on this one - Ryan was just saying that they just want you to listen and they'll keep rocking.
Rock on, Panic. Rock on. :D

i think the song means exactly what the title says. i mean the whole song describes a suicide or a matyrdom. they're really trying to say that there really is no difference except the press coverage and no matter what both are wrong and shouldn't be done.

Some people were wondering why the song is called what it is. I think they took the title from a line of the Chuck Palahniuk book 'Survivor'. This wouldn't be the first time they made reference to him, seeing as the song 'Time to Dance' is directly based off Palahniuk's book "Invisible Monsters." Both of which I have read, and they are really good.
The Title | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/7/08
The title of this song comes from a book by Chuck Palahniuk called 'Survivor' (great book btw). The song is not based off the book, but Palahniuk uses almost this exact line in the book ('Because the only difference between a suicide and a martyrdom really is the amount of press coverage.")It would not be the first time the band used Palahniuk as inspiration, seeing as the song 'Time to Dance' is directly based off Palahniuks novel "Invisible Monsters." <- Another great read.
this is the introduction to 'a fever you cant sweat out' get it. hes saying this is there prolouge - introduction. hes the narrator- lead singer. he said thats what the song was about.
well ryan said it <333

okay to me this song is about cutting yourself...i mean when people cut themselves ar'nt they "desperate for attention?" and when he says "swear to shake it up if you swear to listen" that could also mean that he will shake it up (cutting) to get people to listen. and i mean they even say "were still so young, desperate for attention" idk if im right it's just my opinion

It seems like Panic! is trying to say that (this being their first album) they'll "swear to shake it up, if you swear to listen." meaning that they will keep Panic!ing it up as long as people will listen to their music. "I'm the narrator and this is just the prologue." seems like Brendon saying he's the singer of Panic! at the Disco and this is just the beginning of their album. That's really what this entire song is about: their way of saying if you listen we'll keep rocking.
i dont understand why the song is called 'the only differance between martydom and suicide is press cverage' maybe there is a hidden meaning to the song, but it doesnt really sound like it... still lov the song title though. i thought about it, and i kind of get it, but it also makes my brain hurt. im a bit dissapointed with the 2nd album, its great, but really different. i mean, a fever was, in their own words, 'a phase in time. its not who we are any more.' so, i guess that their not changed, just over the dark times. just to clear things up. but its not about the emoness of the songs. i just like a fever because the tunes are just better. and this song is one of the best!!
