Review The Song (29)Print the Lyrics
I don't know how I'm gonna tell you, I can't play with you no more,
I don't know how I'm gonna do what mama told me, My friend, the boy next door.
I can't believe what people saying, You're gonna let your hair hang down,
I'm satisfied to sit here working all day long, You're in the darker side of town.

And when I'm out I see you walking, Why don't your eyes see me?
Could it be you've found another game to play, What did mama say to me?

That's The Way, Oh, That's The Way it oughtta be, yeah, yeah,
Mama say That's The Way it oughtta stay, yeah, yeah, ooh, ooh

And yesterday I saw you standing by the river,
And weren't those tears that filled your eyes?
And all the fish that lay in dirty water dying,
Had they got you hypnotized?

And yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers,
But all that lives is born to die.
And so I say to you that nothing really matters,
And all you do is stand and cry.

I don't know what to say about it,
When all your ears are turned away,
But now's the time to look and look again at what you see,
Is that the way it ought to stay?

That's the way... That's the way it oughtta be, oh don't you know now,
Mama said, mama said... that's the way it's gonna stay, yeah. ahh, ahhh, ahhhhhhhh

It doesn't have to be the way it is... | Reviewer: Chuck | 11/20/09

Contrast this song with Friends, and choose to give that smile, don't listen to what mama or society or your over-thinking mind says, listen to your heart. When we split this earth let's not have held back our love, but spent it all if even foolishly at times. That's the way I want to be.

Yaa | Reviewer: Allyson. | 10/18/09

I'm 17, and and all I can remember listening to, growing up until now, is Zeppelin. There my favorite ever. When i heard this song when I was about 13, my first thought is that this was about racism. But reading all these reviews I kind of changed my opinion about it. Great song though, so beautiful.

kiss a tiny flower.. | Reviewer: cristo | 9/23/09

I love this song...and really like that the song is for a boy thats so friendly and lovely no matter that is dedicate to a boy... for those that feel that are hippies and for those that were hope never stop being...and the power that moves the hippies never die never have to die will live forever...

¨¨peace and love¨¨

great song. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/10/09

I just figured it out on guitar and I'm playing it for the school talent show. My ex girlfriend will really want me back after hearing it! But for some reason I think of her when I listen to the acoustics off Led Zeppelin III....

Thanx man, | Reviewer: Mary Jane | 3/30/09

Hey thnx. I feel better now, I was just really depressed that day I posted that comment. I know I'm a hippie. Everyone who knows me wants to send me to 6o's + 70's. I feel so mellow, and my dude is back to my best friend now. Peace to you and all Led Zep fans!

~Peace~

Hey Sister,(Mary Jane)
There is a whole world for you to discover that isn't self destructive. If you feel like you're a hippie, dive into some old Grateful Dead. Yes Jerry was self destructive, but the music was quite the contrary. Listen to the words of Van Morrison, watch "Almost Famous" and the scene with Elton John''s "Tiny Dancer", feel the music, and let it flow through you. When your done, find some "Sundays" albums and let it all go.............Bless,
Cape Cod Kid

Hippies... | Reviewer: Mary Jane | 3/7/09

Well, I do know their meaning of the song. But when I first heard this, It reminded me of how Iv'e been changing lately. I went from destructive and Violent, to Peacefull and Stoned.
My boyfriend and I were both destructive and violent until I started to change. He hasn't changed, His mom is a bitch and abuses him, and she also told him multiple times that he's not allowed to see me anymore. But anyway he use to look at me and see a mirror image of himself. A best friend... now he sees me and I'm a Hippie. He says to me "there will never be peace..." and It's like we don't know each other anymore... so the parts of the song that say,

"And yesterday I saw you standing by the river,
And weren't those tears that filled your eyes?
And all the fish that lay in dirty water dying,
Had they got you hypnotized?

And yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers,
But all that lives is born to die.
And so I say to you that nothing really matters,
And all you do is stand and cry.

I don't know what to say about it,
When all your ears are turned away,
But now's the time to look and look again at what you see,
Is that the way it ought to stay?"

They remind me of what he says to me now...
I think he feels that I've changed too much, and he's afraid I don't love him anymore... But I do love him...

You don't need to hear me rant. the point is, this song reminds me of the two of us now. He is the narrator. I'm the person he talks about... only I'm not a boy...

I love this song...
I hope you do too...

heart wrenching soulful piece of music | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/17/09

i think the real beauty of the song lies in d fact dat we all can relate to some expereince of our own past life . and i have cried to the song .it just doesnt matter if its abt brit were irish or americn vs english

thats the way... | Reviewer: coopaloop | 2/13/09

i listen to a lot of led zeppelin, and in the past few years i have come across a dvd of their performance in Earls Courtin '75. i don't know if it means anything but in the live version when the song is played during the show, Plant replaces boy with girl in the first phrase. it struck me as odd, and i was wondering if maybe he was trying to clarify something?

Why | Reviewer: Jon | 1/6/09

This song means a lot to me because I was best friends with a rather twattish individual, and my parents banned me from seeing him. I felt really upset about, as did he, for at one point I walked past the place where me and him used to hang round and I saw him crying. It later turned out that he was drunk on absinthe and he wasn't having a good time.

Heres me thinking he was upset to lose me...
