I absolutely love this song and loved it from the first moment I heard it in the background while watching "The Con". My only wish is that they had added another verse just to give the song a little more length (as it is, I always feel obligated to play the song twice in a row just to get a complete grasp of its emotion.) Otherwise, a lovely and beautiful melody.

This song is about Sara. Tegan wrote it for her back in the early days of their career. They were having a tiff about the band (Sara didn't want to be in the band anymore and her mom wanted her to be, etc., etc.) so Tegan wrote this song for her as a way to express what she was feeling about the whole thing.
"Don't live your life like a story, always thinking you could have been something."
"Don't live your life for me or for anyone."
Both are Tegan speaking to Sara. If you watch their live videos (you can find hundreds all over YouTube or you can buy one of their DVDs), I'm sure you'll hear something about this song and this story surrounding it if you don't believe me.
