The purpose for the baby in the film clip was simply because Beth Gibbons that sang this particular track (also lead singer of Portishead) was pregnant at the time of recording... Surprisingly | Reviewer: Christina | 2/2/08 I love this song for its angelic quality and ethereal atmosphere, but I was extremely surprised when I watched the music video for "Teardrops". Judging from the video, the song is written in the perspective of a fetus that is awaiting the moment it is to be aborted. In other words, this song is an ode to abortion and appears to hint at the opinion that abortion is a cruel and undeserving fate since it portrays the fetus as a strong individual who is just trying to live an innocent life with no malicious designs on anyone. From that moment on, whenever I hear this song I think about abortions and consequently, abortions being a controversial topic, I feel slightly uncomfortable listening to it.
