THIS NIGHT HAS OPENED MY EYES (BBC) Lyrics - The Smiths

Review The Song (7)

In a river the color of lead
Immerse the baby's head
Wrap her up in the news of the world
Dump her on a doorstep, Girl
This night has opened my eyes
And I will never sleep again

You kicked and cried like a bullied child
A grown man of 25,
Oh, he said he'd cure your ills
But he didn't and he never will
Oh, save your life
Because you've only got one
The dream has gone but the baby is real
Oh, you did a good thing
She could have been a poet or she could have been a fool
Oh, you did a bad thing
And I'm not happy and I'm not sad

A shoeless child on a swing
Reminds you of your own again
She took away your troubles
Oh, but then again she left pain
Oh, please save your life
Because you've only got one
The dream has gone but the baby is real
Oh, you did a good thing
She could have been a poet or she could have been a fool
Oh, you did a bad thing
And I'm not happy and I'm not sad

A Taste of Honey | Reviewer: Andy Dog | 6/2/13

This song was directly inspired by/is a re-telling of Shelagh Delaney's beautiful play 'A Taste of Honey' - please check out the film version: stars Rita Tushingham, Murray Melvin, Dora Bryan; directed by Tony Richardson.

Amazing is an insult | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/15/11

This song is nothing less than perfect. Every time I hear it it feels as if my soul has left my body and the smiths have penetrated whats left of me. The lyrics , the meaning , the sound. I wish I could just inject it into my hate yet loved filled veins. God bless the smiths for holding me when I was all alone.

Brilliant and talented | Reviewer: suzie | 1/27/11

Listening to this song brings chills up and down my spine. So sad and yet so beautiful. It describes what some young people should not have to go through but do.Its an amazing song all around...from the lyrics to the music and his amazing voice

Im not happy and im not sad. | Reviewer: Tony | 9/3/10

The way I get this song is about Abortion. It's like she had a baby and instead of abortion she left it on a doorstep, knocked and ran. After thinking of what she did shes not happy because of what she did but then again she is not sad because she gave the baby a second chance at life. Thats just my opinion.

Leaves you pleased | Reviewer: J R | 12/15/07

It's a profound type of song teeter tottering on the perfect melancholy moments that distinguish being adolescent from being adult. We're not quite there but we sure act as if we are, and I think no other words could paint the better picture.

The Smiths- A Moment In Perfect Synergy | Reviewer: Rick H. | 9/24/07

The song THIS NIGHT HAS OPENED MY EYES is one of "THE" true lyrics of "Soul Music". I am from Motown and this song ranks with the top "Songs of the Soul" that Motown and the blues brought to the world. The Smiths are a "Soul Band" or a "Band that speaks from the Soul". They were brilliant at times. A Pop band, Soul, Rhythem and Blues. Nevermind the Queen, God save The Smiths.

Too profound, intelligent and brilliant | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/26/07

The saddest Smiths's song. The music and lyrics blend. You can not say what happen at the end. It is a warning to many youths to think twice about the person to share their life with and about what you want to do in with your life when you are too young to think. Brilliant, intelligent and to profound...
