THE STROKE Lyrics - Billy Squier

Review The Song (5)

Now everybody have you heard
If you're in the game, then the strokes the word
Dont take no rhythm, dont take no style
Got a thirst for killin, grab your vial and ...

Put your right hand out, give a firm hand-shake
Talk to me about that one big break...
Spread your ear-pollution both far and wide...
Keep your contributions by your side and stroke me, stroke me
Could be a winner boy, you move quite well...
Stroke me, stroke me...
Stroke me, stroke me...
You got your number down...
Stroke me, stroke me...
Stroke me, stroke me...
Say youre a winner but man youre just a sinner now

Put your left foot out keep it all in place...
Work your way right into my face
First you try to bed me you make my backbone slide
But when you found you bled me, skip on by... keep on
stroke me, stroke me
Give me the business all night long
Stroke me, stroke me (stroke)
Stroke me, stroke me
Youre so together boy...
Stroke me, stroke me
Say youre a winner but man youre just a sinner now

Stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke

Better listen now said it aint no joke
Let your conscience fail ya, just do the stroke
Dontcha take no chances keep your eye on top
Do your fancy dances you cant stop you just stroke me, stroke me

Stroke, stroke

Stroke me, stroke me

Stroke, stroke

Stroke me, stroke me

Stroke, stroke

Stroke me, stroke me

Do it.

Stroke me, stroke me.

Stroke me, stroke me.

Come on, stroke

Stroke me, stroke me.

Stroke me, stroke me.

Say youre a winner but man youre just a sinner now...

really great lyrics | Reviewer: Matth | 4/21/11

OC guy, you don't have to feel deeply disturbed by this. It's not actually a sexual song if you read into it.

Just picture a suave, phoney wall street executive with dollar signs in his eyes. The singer is saying "stroke my ego all you want, but I'm not falling for your BS." Even the lyric "first you try to bed me" isn't literal.

It's wine me, dine me, 69 me. Sexual innuendo? Yes, sploogeloads of it. People licked that shit up in the 80's. But ultimately the message is: unbridled greed is the destroyer. In this song, the business man is likened to a sexual predator. The celebration of "The Stroke" is meant to be ironic.

It's About the Recording Business | Reviewer: OneMorePelican | 2/5/11

This song is told from the point of view of a recording label executive signing a new act to their label. The eponymous 'Stroke' is, yes, a sexual metaphor, but also more related to "stroking the ego", talking about the hoops a band has to jump through and dealing with their label, which is constantly trying to change the artistic direction of the band, which is kind of like the whole 'sleeping with the producer' joke in the movie business. Basically it's welcoming the New Guy to the machine of the music industry, and it's not a welcome sight, but the artist is forced to acquiesce to the nightmare and go along with it all. It's an interesting kind of Dues song, using a sexual metaphor to describe the state of the industry.
