In your white lace and your wedding bells
You look the picture of contented new wealth
But from the on-looking fool who believed your lies
I wish this grave would open up and swallow me alive
For the bitterest pill is hard to swallow
The love I gave hangs in sad coloured, mocking shadows
When the wheel of fortune broke, you fell to me
Out of grey skies to change my misery
The vacant spot, your beating heart took its place
But now I watch smoke leave my lips and fill an empty room
For the bitterest pill is hard to swallow
The love I gave hangs in sad coloured, mocking shadows
The bitterest pill is mine to take
If I took it for a hundred years, I couldn't feel any more ill
The bitterest pill is mine to take
If I took it for a hundred years, I couldn't feel any more ill
Now autumn's breeze blows summer's leaves through my life
Twisted and broken dawn, no days with sunlight
The dying spark, you left your mark on me
The promise of your kiss, but with someone else
For the bitterest pill is mine to swallow
The love I gave hangs in sad coloured, mocking shadows
The bitterest pill is mine to take
If I took it for a hundred years, I couldn't feel anymore ill!

Review about THE BITTEREST PILL bitterest pill | Reviewer: christine | 1/13/09
I wll never forgrt hearing this song for the first time... My friend Fran and I met Paul Weller after winning the tower records poster contest, Her and I followed them to the huntington hotel in pasadena.
we joined them at the bar for cokes and told them our favorite songs... I thanked paul for introducing me to the great poet P B SHELLY. they were really nice to couple of goofy girls
"It stands the test of time" is probably the most overused remark in music, however,it still applies to "The Bitterest Pill" I remember when I heard "pill" and felt like it applied to me, then right after that I heard the Jam would break up. This song still evokes emotion today. This was definitley a sign of Wellers growth and he did go on to make greater personal successes. Thanks Paul I appreciated your music

That great crossover point between late Jam/Early Style Council. His best period. This song is up there with Speak Like A Child
Last great Jam song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/5/06
Probably the best song the Jam ever did. If Paul Weller had gone on to do stuff like this when he went solo I might have bought his records.
